Amazing setup pmags! Looks very sturdy, ergonomic, and most of all… fun!
Can you tell us a bit about the various brands/models of laptop stands you use? How do you rate the sturdyness? Are they fairly wobble-free when banging/tweaking on the gear?
Man that is tight! Great job getting all that gear on that small of a table, and still having all surfaces visible and easy to get to. Your routing setup is nice!
I just got an Eventide Space about a week ago. It has been a giant leap forward, sound wise. I’ve been trying EVERY sound through the Space! Can’t get enough of it.
Pauls, that’s a really tasty setup. I have a rolling desk setup but it takes up more space and isn’t all that portable - I definitely like the ergonomics of your approach.
BTW what’s that silver thing on the bottom right of your rack? To my surprise I don’t recognize it at all.
Looks like a Novation KS Rack. [/quote]
Yep!
Unfortunately it’s current placement in the rack isn’t ideal in turns of sound mangling, but I’m working on a Cirklon instrument def that will hopefully allow me to do most of my KS Rack tweaking from the Cirklon itself.
It is interesting that you seem to prefer using the cirklon rather than the OT as a midi sequencer. Why did you make this choice ? Do you think that the cirklon is a much better midi sequencer than the OT ? How did it changes you workflow ?
@pmags
Would you mind giving us a brief overview of your signalflow? A hand drawing or a list would do it perfectly.
I know it’s not simple but since I’m struggling with a lot of different gear to integrate with my patch bay i would massivly appreciate it…!!
Big thanks!
Pic is slightly misleading with respect to distance between setup and left speaker due to the angle and lens it was shot on. When in use there’s a decent amount of distance between speakers and eqpt and a relatively unobstructed line of sight to the listener. Could be better but it’s the best I can do with the space I have to work with.
In response to a couple of queries, here’s a more detailed description of my patchbay setup.
I’ve got two patchbays (one Behringer, one Samson) paired with two line mixers (Samson SM10). I acquired the Behringer first, but the Samson patchbay is the more convenient of the two, as it allows you to change the normaling from the front of the unit.
If I want to get really funky with signal routing I can employ the Shure Auxpander which allows for even more complex and interesting routing possibilities, sending any of 8 inputs to any combination of 4 stereo outputs. They don’t make the Auxpander anymore, but I was able to find one on ebay for about $200.
Here’s an example of a semi-complex routing that exploits the Auxpander to create three parallel routings of the Machine Drum. Two of the routes have effects applied (and one is fed back into the Octatrack), the third is the unaltered signal:
Machine Drum --> Aux 1,2 --> Space (Reverb) --> Octratrack --> Mixer
Machine Drum --> Aux 1,2 --> Timeline (Delay) --> Mixer
Machine Drum --> Aux 1,2 --> Mixer
Thank you @pmags for your explanations!
It is truly intersting how flexible one can be by just linking some tools as simple as a patchbay into the signal flow!
Are you playing life sets with this setup or is this tower for home use only. The reason why I’m asking is because I’m aiming at a live setup which is flexible but that is also allowing me to go from one song to another without leaving the audience to a five minute reset silence
It seems that your setup either is more of an experimental songwriting station that’s allowing you to carve out sounds or it is a perfect jam machine that can go on for hours.
Any further explanation is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Pmags, thank you so very much for this! It’s starting to make sense slowly but one thing still eludes me though - in your examples where do outputs of Timeline and Space come back to, to Mixer 3 & 4, correct?
