This is my DJ and modular live perfornance setup.
I use the X1 MK2 on the mixer with Traktor, a Digitakt on CH3 and a Quadrantid Swarm synth voice setup on CH4.
I’ll be using Traktor efffects on my two decks, but I intend to use the effects of the mixer on my synth setup.
I am torn between a DJM-750MK2 and a Xone PX5 mixer.
Does anyone have any recommendation or advice between these two products?
Hi, welcome to the forum. Lots of good resources here, particularly for the Xone PX5. I’m sure people will have some opinions for you but in the interim a few things for you to peruse:
@geronimo any opinion on the DJM-750MK2 for this purpose? I think you’re still using one in your live set up.
Regarding the 750MK2 (with the caveat that I haven’t used the PX5): I’m quite happy with it, although I probably don’t utilize it to its fullest potential. With that said, here are the “pros”:
Built like a tank (rugged)
Beat FX are fun for live use, especially when you factor in the ability to select which frequency range they impact
functions as a 5-channel USB audio interface (with drivers)
Traktor DVS support
sounds great!
My use case is simple - my musician partner and I use it to combine our various synths/samplers and use the 750Mk2 to control overall levels, fade things in/out, and sprinkle some of the FX on for transitions/etc…A dash of the beat FX goes a long way FWIW. There’s 2 headphone outputs, which is great for us to each cue up different sources live.
“Cons”:
built like a tank (heavy)
no dedicated MIDI ports (does MIDI via USB)
FX are limited in terms of editing
no 1/4” inputs (the RCAs are top notch though!)
audio routing not as flexible as some A&H mixers (haven’t used a PX5, so not sure how they compare in that regard).
Another caveat - when I purchased my 750MK2, I got it for $999 US; I see it listed for $1299 currently. Whichever mixer you choose, be sure to shop around
Even in a studio setting, a lot of people like to check the mix with 2 sets of cans so this is a huge plus, even if it’s a small thing. Being able to have both sets of headphones plugged in at once is invaluable, and for you working with another musician this is a big deal so I don’t know if it influenced your purchase at all but it’s probably paid for itself in that way.
Amazing. Thank you so much guys for the feedback. I can get a good price on the djm-750mk2. It also seems that you can’t apply frequency range on beat FX on the Xone PX5.
One other thing to consider is the Xone is a class compliant audio interface, the 750 is not, and requires drivers. To some people this makes no difference, but to people like me who throw ipads into the mix, its a huge deal breaker for pioneer, even though its what i would prefer to use…
I hear that A&H analog audio quality is superior to PDJ. When it comes to comparing the Xone PX5 and the DJM-750MK2, is that something anyone can pick up on, or is it more of a snob detail that no one will ever notice or care about?
I haven’t tried and I don’t have any on my disposal to test.
Any guidance on this topic will definitely steer my decision at the end when considering purchasing one of these two units.
=)
The PX5 is a fully analog signal path with the exception of the effects. To the best of my knowledge, the DJM750 would do a conversion to digital at the channel inputs then a conversion back to analog at the output stage. If that’s of concern to you then the PX5 is the way to go.
Personally, I love my PX5. My partner DJs and she has the DJM750MKII here at home. Nothing wrong with that mixer. It’s just not my cup of tea.
If you’re actually gigging, consider going for the DJM-750MK2 because it’s more likely that you’ll get it when it’s on your rider so you don’t have to bring it yourself. If you’re going this way be also prepared for the V10. If you ask for A&H, you’ll have most chances with the Xone 96.
Thank you for the response.
I can get a good price on the DJM-750MK2 and that makes quite a difference with the Xone PX5, so I’ll probably go with the PDJ mixer.
Thank you for the info though. That was very helpful
=)
So, I finally got my DJM-750MK2.
I have a quick question now. Can I use the DJM-750MK2 as a 5-CH mixer?
I tried to connect my synth to the MIC input via an XLR converter cable, but I had no output from the MIC channel.
I checked online and saw that the line output from the synth might be too hot for the MIC input, and that a DI box was recommended.
Do you think that this DI box would be an adequate solution?
