Wind controllers?

Anyone have thoughts about or experience splitting the midi signal from a wind controller?
Im using EWI Usb and an ipad, and would like to have the lower octave or so send a sustained note to Scaler , then the rest of the notes sent to a SWAM instrument.
Looks like Mozaic could do it maybe. Any other suggestions

That’s a huge surprise.

I am both a Hydrasynth fanatic, and a Sax, Recorder, Aerophone player.

This right away has me extremely interested.

Diosynth !!

I did know Glen is a wind player so it makes sense they would do this. Thank you ASM !

Stand and hardshell case included, plus a ton of accessories.

ADDED : Jimbo created a thread for the Diosynth.

Along with running the Aerophone into an Anyma Phi ( the Phi has USB MIDI host so it’s easy ) i’ve set it up so i can control my Hydrasynth Keys. I am very comfortable creating and moding patches on the HS so i get a lot of flexibility to try things. The HS can do some amazing things with a wind controller. There is something so expressive about feeling control from tongue and breath and fingers around the barrel of an instrument.

Doing virtual analog on the HS this way is very rewarding. ( I actually have a few Casio DH-100s and i love the real gritty analog with those – though the keys are lacking, the breath control is suprisingly good on the DH-100. )

So now with the Diosynth, it will be a direct connection to the HS internals which will help me a lot. The FM patches should be good this way too. ( That is if the **Diosynth has the FM like the HS ? Not positive on that. ADDED : No it doesn’t. )

I will try the Anyma Phi with the Diosynth pretty quickly too.

I will keep my Aerophone for a while, as i get used to the Diosynth, but i anticipate just selling it on if things work out ( fingers crossed ).

Maybe i can run the Diosynth out to some Eurorack analog gear through a real nice involved MIDI to CV to get the ability to play some real analog expressively again.

They’ll have to pry my Aerophone from my cold dead hands.lmao. However, I look forward to seeing how scale mode works, if they have a new take on a chord mode. I can see where pairing Dio scale mode with Scaler 3 on iPad/DN2 chord mode can be game changing for me.

This is what i say for my real saxes, AND recorders.

I will see how the Diosynth works out for me. It’s is a big ask, and there is much undefinable that a instrument maker can’t anticipate in a design. But i have a lot of confidence in the designers, and more specifically the testers Glen helped assemble at ASM and Medeli. But it’s a personal thing too, so peoples feelings in an A/B comparison will never be unanimous.

I do know how quickly the Aerophone replaced other wind synths / controllers i had, like specifically a high end Yamaha product name now blotted out of my memory.

I know the vibes. I found a certain all black Yamaha extremely disappointing and Aerophone definitely replaced all of my Akai EWIs. If I never see another it’ll be too soon. I shamefully haven’t picked up any of my real saxes in years. Too heavy and I like synths, layered sounds these days. Swam for acoustic is just easier and headphones make practicing too easy.

Aerophone is as close to perfect as I can imagine but I’m looking forward to ASM attempt. If they get close, we all win. I happen to know that Roland is also close to releasing a refresh so I won’t be very forgiving of Dio. If it ain’t ready for prime time it’s going back until it is because I know Roland will deliver for sure. I’m rooting for ASM as the price is almost unbelievable which helps me check expectations. Perhaps they know how great Roland is and want to be sure they pack enough value in the bundle to get a lot of early adopters to experience any parity.

Either way, I can’t wait until it arrives to my mailbox.

It depends for me if the shortcomings, and there is always at least a niggle, is whether it’s a mechanical issue, a hardware issue, or a software one. I can work around most software things. I just need to be able to get in the flow with the instrument.

Roland has definitely made great strides. The Brisa really shows that too, it even is tempting to me despite the price, and the fact i am not good at all on a transverse flute.

Something i am wondering about, the placement of the speaker high on the neck of the Diosynth, is whether that may help with the sound travel through mouth to ear which i find a nice part of acoustic playing.

Abbreviation for the Diosynth, i’ve considered Dio, and DS like HS for Hydrasynth, but i think DO may work, given that is the pronounciation rather than rhyming with ā€œbiosynthā€.

Same. The bugs would have to be flow killers, sound mediocre and hardware annoying like Akai EWI Solo, touch keys and octave rollers (HATE).lol.

I don’t anticipate any of these things. Just stating the deal breakers for me. I don’t have any expectations. Completely new to ASM sound but here high praise re: HS and—how great they are at midi which will be particular great if it improves on already stellar AE midi control/access via apps.

What we have is an embarrassment of riches. So many synth makers prioritizing wind/breath control over the past decade has been amazing and most unexpected. DN2 may be the most underrated wind synth module and just a dream to program. As is MicroFreak, countless desktop/iOS synths by big name manufactures.

@adamc mentioned what seems like some limitations with fingerings which will be very important. While I tend to go with traditional sax fingering, Akai makes it really easy to customize hard to reach keys, functions. Hopefully Dio offers similar. If not at launch soon thereafter. That seems like it would be easy to address in a firmware update and something any experienced wind player would be aware of so tbh I expect it won’t be an issue.

About fingerings.

I thought that early on. I know i made several wierd refingering changes on the Aerophone that just made sense to me. Not too worried. I expect a few firmware updates within a year.

I don’t understand the attraction of altissimo fingerings on wind synths. ( Maybe they could have a mode that forces you to change reeds every hour ! ) Isn’t part of the thing with a wind synth to get rid of that and regularize fingerings across seven octaves or whatever. ( Although if there was some other MIDI control sent for an altissimo fingering that might be OK. I can’t reliably sound half of them anyway. )

I play so many damn different winds, there is just an automatic switch in my head to change fingerings when i pick something else up.

NOTE: I gave that as an example mostly for the people who use their Aerophone more to practice their saxophone.

I only use a single octave’s worth of fingerings and then use the octave key/rollers to move around.

Yeah I have some that work out of the box on my EWI/NuRAD that I needed to program into the Aerophone Pro so I didn’t have to think moving between instruments.

I was able to do the same on the Robkoo R1 and Artinoise Recorder as well.

5 to 6 years seems to be their refresh cycle and its getting closer to that.

My guess would be one more version of software updates for the AE20/30 then a new product.

Which reminds me I still haven’t gotten around to updating my AE30 to 3.10

Here’s an OK video that compares these four+ sax like wind synths.

  • Yamaha YDS-150
  • Odisei Travel Sax 2
  • Roland Aerophone AE-20
  • ASM Diosynth

He intentionally leaves the EWI aside.

( He mangles a few things in the video, like he says Die-O-Synth :weary: so read the captions. )

A queue directly to the Diosynth part.

My personal opinion – the Diosynth pretty much takes it all, with a few small reasons for the others.

Go ahead and nominate / discuss other competitors he misses.

This video just made the wait for DS rise to just under unbearable. Very high praise from someone who clearly loves AE as much as I do. If it’s as good or better than Aerophone, which appears to be the case, it’s going to be a wonderful start to 2026.

Best video for DS yet imo.

*Sweetwater rep says it won’t leave the North Pole until end of Dec which sucks but hopefully be there to blow in some new notes with the New Year

I think the Dio will be enough for me to finally upgrade from my ewi usb. It seems to have all I want. In the meantime been practicing using swam ios and old recorder sheet music.
Considering buying the double reed bundle (SWAM)
Any experience good or bad??

Another new one coming

Linked website on the Youtube page is Japanese only. This might be more useful to English readers

Official store - not showing it yet though - maybe in 2026

I have the Robkoo R1 which I guess is the earlier version of the Clarii Pro

I got an aerophone recently – has anybody used something like this for bluetooth MIDI from a wind instrument? I’d like to not be plugged in using it for a controller…

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/WIDIMaster--cme-widi-master-professional-wireless-midi-black

I’m wondering what the latency is like… it says ultra low, but nothing specific…

I use the Panda Midibeam. Works very well. Bluetooth has too much latency. I have the transmitter built into my NuEVI. Very convenient.
