Who's using an A4 cv to Modular?

How do you like your Pittsburgh mixer, nedavine? I’m thinking I’ll probably need a little audio mixer before adding more sound sources.

The volts converter, Optomix and VC bend waiting for me at the post office finally, can’t wait until tomorrow. :smiley:

We want to control our moog minitaur via A4 and it sounds completely out of tune.

We’ve tried various middle c and v/oct settings in our (pitch v/oct CV B output) and can’t find any that tune our minitaur correctly.

Does anyone know how to fix this? We even tried factory resetting our minitaur without any luck… It’s in tune when used via ableton live, but not our A4.

It’s good for the price but I really wish I had gotten something with CV control and more options. I thought being able to use it as an attenuator as well would be useful but most of my modules have attuators on them so it’s not of much use yet. When I get the optomix I’ll start using it for more interesting things but at the moment it’s literally just for mixing oscilators.

Finally got the little volts today, so toying around with Braids now, it sounds sweet! But I haven’t yet understood how to turn it “off” by sending the gate on/off signal from the A4, so on most of the waveforms the sound is just constantly on. I’ve managed to sequence it though, but completely in the dark as to how to send it gate on/off. Am I wrong in thinking the “trig” input on the Braids should function as a gate?
Man, I’ve got a lot to learn and wrap my head around. :smiley:

the gate will only work the trigger modes (pluck, drum and bell I believe). That was the most daunting thing about modular when I first got mine. The oscilators constantly stream audio, gating only works via a VCA. I use the VCA on my ripples at the moment.

Ah, and so finally, the real importance of the VCA really dawns on me! :smiley: It actually became clear to me a few minutes ago while using the Optomix.

I’m reading the manuals for these things over and over, but can’t really wrap my head around a lot of the wording, but I find that I’m learning a lot simply by experimenting so far. The Maths is just a beast, wow, it can be the modulation/control hub of a system for sure.
The ribbon cable that came with my Pittsburgh VC Bend doesn’t have very clear markings (and neither does the PCB board), so I haven’t dared hooking it up yet (have sent a mail to them).
So far it’s been pretty much just nutty professor-like stuff, but enjoying it never the less! :smiley:
I’m not familiar enough with the Optomix to recommend it yet, unfortunately, will play with it some more and report back.

You can use the optomix as a VCA so you should be able to “shut braid up” with it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You can also do the bongo stuff with ti too but I believe it can do normal straight VCA stuff if you feed it an envelope from either the A4 or maths (from the a4 is easiest because you have to feed maths a trigger for it to work as a EG.

When I first got my function I just went through and did every one of those patches from the picture manual that I linked earlier. Now function is completely at my mercy.

I served Maths the clean signal from the Braids, but it sounded distorted sent through that and just through to the out to Optomix, I’m having better results just modulating an envelope onto the trig input of the braids, for some reason. I’m probably just using it wrong though. Got some very sweet pulses that way though (cross connected with some Optomix strike action).

Shit, if you can have this much fun with three modules, imagine three rack cases of these things! Damn, I might as well say goodbye to the rest of the world for a while now. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Don’t think I’ve seen the picture manuals you’ve linked to, will have to look over this thread to find those. Could be cool to try out some textbook-patching with the Maths, as it seems to be able to do so much.

Fantastic! Thanks a lot! I know what I’ll be doing tonight. :wink: Hooked up the VC Bend too, seems a pretty nifty addition to any oscillator.

Just a reminder: while the trigger input on Braids will indeed “strike” the oscillator in some modes (Pluk, Bell, etc - as already mentioned), a recent update allows for simple VCA behavior as well.

The TENV settings are named things like “Womp, Bomp” and so on, which basically describe the preset Attack-Decay shapes you can create with the trigger input.

With this, I don’t actually need a separate module to perform VCA duties for Braids. I still use others–SSF Positronic Transient Gate, ModdeMix–in conjunction with Maths to create more controlled, complex VCA envelope shapes.

TL;DR – Braids is awesome.

I have to say I haven’t quite grasped the Optomix yet. I thought it would be more like a regular type of filter (guess I understood the description wrong), but what it does, it does pretty well. You can get some incredibly smooth and organic compressor-like effects with it. I really think I need to add a proper filter at some point though, as the Optomix seems more like a VCA/mini-mixer at this point. I need to experiment some more with it though.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the E350 Morphing Terrarium. It is beautiful sounding and so smooth for a wavetable style digital oscillator. Can be used as an interesting LFO, too.

Plus, sending out two views of the voice (X-Y Morph and Z Morph) at once. . . priceless.

Good to hear! I’ve been impressed by what I’ve heard of it. Was originally planning on getting the Piston Honda, but the dual oscillator of the E350 and the “smoother” morphing had me sold. Sounds like a very interesting module. :slight_smile:

Yeah the E350 looks lush. I was worried that there would be too much overlap with the braids but damn it sounds nice. If I could grab one I probably would. No stockers round here at though.

I’m struggling getting the A4 to sequence the Braids. I got it working a couple of days ago, but now the Braids is no longer responding to the sequencing, it’s only responding to the playing of the mini-keyboard of the A4.

Got an insert-plug coming out of CV AB, B-tip going into V/Oct on the Braids, CV B set to Pitch V/Oct on the A4. I’ve tried setting CV B to “Trig” and plugging that into the Trig-input of the Braids, but no luck.

I’m finding navigating around the CV part of the A4 to be a massive pain in the ass, but it’s probably because I don’t understand much of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

send the trig to your maths, then output maths to cv in of optomix.

CV A (From A4) is set to “Trig”, Source - CV, plugged into “Trig” input of Maths channel 1
CV B (From A4) is set to “Pitch V/Oct”, Source - CV, plugged into V/Oct on Braids
CH1 Out from Maths going into Input 1 (Top left input) of Optomix
Out from Braids going into Input 2 of Optomix
