Who's using an A4 cv to Modular?

I use the SSF PTG (Positronic Transient Gate) as a good, clean gain stage for outboard gear that I wish to input into [url=“http://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/58106”]my modular rig.
The forewarning here: modular signal levels and regular line levels (or instrument levels) are not the same. Do not expect to just get a 1/4" to 1/8" patch cable and expect signals to marry nicely.
I also use the Pittsburgh Modular Outs for line level output duties.

the PTG looks interesting. A bit confused as to what it actually does. At first I thought it was something like the optomix but its actualy an envelope generator right?

It is like an Optomix, but much more multi-purpose. Steady State Fate published a free patch book

with ideas on all the different ways you might use it.

Gain stages, two VCAs, envelope generators, envelope follower. . . It really is versatile and has very high audio quality.

Well thats very interesting. They have sold out at my local supplier which sucks cos I could grabbed one next week and held off on getting an optomix.

I love how frames sounds interpolating between the scenes too. I think I am going to buy a metropolis next though. my local retailer has em in stock and i’m curious to sequence the A4 with it using a cv to midi converter (minitaur)

My function arrived today. Only had a very quick play but damn those are some snappy envelopes. People often talk about snappy envelopes and what not. I’ve owned a lot of synths and have never really noticed the difference but the function is snappy as shit! You can get some great percussive sounds. I may have to buy a PEG next, modulation has never been so much fun.

Hi All,

Here’s my first attempt at a plan:

http://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/93286

The only issue is there’s no VCA right now–I assume I’ll need one with the oscillator and filter without the low pass gate. I love the idea of the 4ms VCA matrix but that will bring me onto two rows…

Thoughts? This is with an OT A4 and a bunch of pedals.

you could always run your oscillators into the A4 for your VCA duties. curious to hear how you like the echophon. ive been debating getting one since the A4 has a delay already, though i know there is different functionality

I think an Echophon is going to be my next module (last space in my 3U), the pitch sifting and feedback look great. After that think I will move to 104HP 6U, and look at getting a few external FX boxes to interface with the S.B.G from Busy Circuits before filling out the modular some more.

Why do you need two outputs? I’ve heard the pittsburgh one really colours the sound.
You should check the SBG as mentioned earlier to use your pedals.

Thanks for the replies.

The SBG looks like a great alternative for the pedals.

The two outputs–I was mainly interested in having an out so I could use headphones with the modular if I wanted to without plugging in other stuff (like the Elektron units). With the Maths and a guitar and bass through an EHX freeze (aka, my polyphonic oscillator that does chords instantly), I should be able to get some good drones going. I am open to other ideas.

The Echophon: I’m very interested in voltage controlled delays and being able to insert things in the feedback loop. And even if I didn’t care about that, neither the OT’s nor the A4’s delay are very satisfying as dub delays. The A4 gets out of control waaaayyyy too fast. I’ve also got some tasty pedals but the plan is to make heavy use of that feedback loop option, as well as the pitch shifting.

I don’t think I can count on the A4 inputs being available at all times for the modular, so I probably should plan on a VCA module for when I"m not using the low-pass gate.

intellijel uVCA II is very nice. And cheap

ironically, I may be picking up some modular for effects instead of buying pedals…I mean you are looking at $500 a pop for like a timeline and a space…modular isn’t going to be more expensive than that and they would be pieces I could continue to build on

This may be the first post I’ve ever seen suggesting modular as a bargain. I definitely think it’s not. You could get a decent interface for your laptop, run Reaper or Bidule as a cheap host, and purchase some Valhalla reverbs and a few good delays, control it all with an OT or iPad or box of knobs, and be way under the $1000 you’d get to quickly for a single channel of modular signal processing. The laptop would be infinitely more flexible, stereo and sound as good as the Strymon or Eventide pedals.
OTOH, there are lots of other reasons to go modular–it’s not inside a computer, it’s upgradeable but doesn’t HAVE to be upgraded, and it’s got a very fun interface.

Hey Ned, where do you hear/see the comment on the Pittsburgh unit? I can’t seem to find any negative reviews, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong place.

Some people were talking about it on muffs. I think it was the thread about LF
o bleed in the synthesizer voice but I can’t recall.

A rather messy mockup, but it should work once wired up…, https://twitter.com/suicidelane/status/463116254048292865

Very nice. Great idea too!

Also made another modular jam video if you guys are interested. This one is very chill

there is some lfo bleed to some synthesiser voice modules. same goes for the doepfer 111-5 when the lfo is on high speed.
but the pitt outs is a very handy module. especially if you plan to interface it with non modular gear (reduce levels) and/or like working with headphones.

I imagine it is very useful. I like the look of the intellijel one but being as I run it into the A4 as it is I don’t to waste the HP in my own case.

On another note I wanted to ask you guys another question. Has anyone used the OT to control a CV with the LFO designer? I am assuming it must be possible as I have used midi tracks on the OT to control the CV track t but I haven’t tried the LFO yet.
