What's your TECHNO setup

Tubeohm Phoenix XT which is the Mutable Instruments Shruthi XT. Tubeohm continued to sell kits some time after Mutable Instruments discontinued the Shruthi and Shruthi XT.

Nice jam on SC, love the energy!

 yea took a lot of research to get everything compressed into such a manageable space like that. There’s 2 patch bays in the rack below so I can route each device into the input of whichever other device I like (mostly deciding what goes into the OT at any given time) and then all of my Apollo interface inputs are available below too

Wow, nicely done! Great and clean!

I’ll post a picture of my less-perfect setup that I described above once I’ve put it back together with my freshly returned Xone 96.

I wonder: I see lots of setups without a mixer. Have some of you tried integrating a DJ mixer? It’s loads of fun!

Ah ok, something special then!

Thanks for listening, I’m “new” to jamming techno this way, practicing, and finding my ways… So fun though and liberating! Jam, record in stereo, call it a day

The non-XT version is pretty common I think, maybe not so popular anymore (?), but also the XT isn´t really rare I´d say. There were times at which it wasn´t possible to buy a case, so maybe that´s a reason why you don´t see them so often. But special, yes, definitely!

Hehe, same and thanks for listening, too!

Very nice. I would’ve thought you’d want the OT closer, though.

The OT is very similar to a DJ Mixer in this setup, as most of the other gear runs through it. Never actually tried one though, sounds fun

Because the OT 1/4" jacks are in rows of 2 instead of 1, It doesn’t fit well into the stands unless its at the top. I kinda alternate between sitting to “write” and standing to “perform” anyway.

Another jam with OT, AR and Shruthi XT, this time working more with Octatrack scenes.

I really like the crisp sound of your Rytm percussions. Those super short snares are nice.

Thanks! Rytm can sound super crisp, especially when synth engines are layered with samples and a pinch of overdrive is added. Octatrack compressor helped a little, though. The OT comp is really good!

Nice one! I’m curious: what is it that the H9 is doing, I see a value being automated on the beat consistently…

Thanks. I’m using the Blackhole algo, just a little dialed in on the Rytm and a little more on OT. With lows cut completely it produces a nice backhround atmosphere. H9 level is being modulated from OT with an inverted exponential wave in one shot mode, trigs placed where the kick hits, so essentialy using an lfo to duck the reverb.

I’m also using an inverted exp wave lfo in one shot mode on the thru machine for the Shruthi XT. Using filter width works much better than amp volume for ducking imo.

Sounds great! I love the energy, the vibe, well done!

I bought an A4 and Rytm in the last couple of weeks. Have been using them on their own to get to know them but have now finished incorporating them into my new “mixerless” techno rig.

TD-3 and SH-01A into the A4 external inputs.

A4 main out into Rytm external inputs.

Rytm main out into MC-707 external inputs.

Peak into MC-707 return inputs.

MC-707 assignable outs back to Rytm audio inputs for sampling. This means I can sample anything into either the Rytm or MC-707.

The A4 and Rytm change patterns in sync with scene changes in the MC-707. Seems to work well. Nice to use the MC-707 pads (which support key scales) with the Rytm and A4.

How do you like it mixerless?

I’m also a strong proponent of a no-mixer policy for techno setups, although even I have to admit that I occasionally miss the flexibility of a mixer with some good routing options. No mixer feels much better for a creative human-machine interaction though.

I wonder about summing stereo sources (e.g Rytm, Virus, Evolver) to mono and putting them through the OT for a mixerless live setup. 4th input would take a 303.

Since I hear most venue PAs are mono, would there be any disadvantage to this?

That would be everything I’d want to use live and could use OT comp and the transitions trick this way.

Since I got the MC-707 a year ago I’ve been using that with a couple of mono synths and the Peak, and as it’s four inputs can be routed to individual channels you could also use it as a mixer.

Now I have incorporated the A4 and Rytm I’ve had to route the mono synths into the A4 (so can adjust volume, pan and fx sends there) and then the A4 into the Rytm, and Rytm into the MC-707.

To be honest I’m not sure how I’m going to get on as I’ve only just set it up, but as it’s primarily for jamming I’m sure I’ll be fine. I tend to just record the main out from my MC-707. I don’t have much space so if I wanted a mixer I’d have to lose the peak and a mono synth.

If you have a bunch of elektrons it truly is amazing how far you can get without a mixer if you’re just careful with the levels.

My techno setup is also without a mixer with my MC-707 acting as the main sequencer and mixer. Love this setup! I would love to have a few more inputs though, so I am thinking of adding a compact mixer (Mackie Mix8) to sum some stereo sources to go together into the MC-707. I love having the MC-707 as the end of the chain of everything so I can use its master compressor and fx.

I’m currently thinking of buying a big guitar pedalboard to stick all my gear on it prewired to easily take it with me to a gig or jam at another location and just plug and play when I arrive.

I am wondering if there is any easy way to keep things kind of prewired, but with an easy way to connect everything back to my audio interface in the studio separate (so I can multitrack each instrument), without having to reconnect all cables again. Was thinking of buying a couple of multicore cables with jacks on one end and D-sub connector on the other end, some male, some female. That way I can just connect 8 sources at once using the male d-sub connector to another female d-sub. Any other ideas?

A patchbay will let you mix “prewired” and “what happens if I connect this to that?”. Some take dsub on the back, but I think they’re the more spendy models.
