What's your latest purchase & what are your intentions with it? [pics ftw] (Part 2)

Not a purchase, but a gift from a friend who just got the new version.

My intention? Tighten up!

That’s a generous gift. Those aren’t cheap!

I think he’s trying to tell me something…

Key 37 acquired. It’s actually a lot more ā€˜burgundy’ in the flesh. Less Ferrari than all the photos and videos would suggest. Feels very solid as well.

Intentions are learning the MPC workflow and enjoying the ā€˜stand alone production center’ side of things… It’s a bit daunting actually getting into a new eco system, but looking forward to learning :sunglasses:

These look amazing. I thought about buying my daughter one as it would fit on her desk in her room nicely and give her everything she needs.

Edit: plus red is her favourite colour

Supposed to be downsizing but the Perkons finally released in black made it irresistible.

One of the Rytm or Syntakt will prob have to go for sure!

Edit forgot to say - Juno gave me 91 quid discount code as they advertise to get in touch for better price. Great service and instant dispatch within an hour or so

Do the pads have the same feel as the MPC Live?

Marvelous!

Do you have an R8 for the anvil hit? (I suppose you have plenty of sample power for that though if needed

I don’t know, this is my first MPC

No R8 (unfortunately!), but my previous house (to which I still have access) has a fortified tornado shelter in the basement with 6" concrete walls and ceiling, and a big solid metal door. It has a marvelous 7-second reverb and I have a pile of metal poles. Will that do?

Damn, you Kansans don’t f**k around! I guess ā€œTornado Alleyā€ ain’t just something in the movies…

I’ve never felt inclined to use that room for anything other than a reverb chamber. But I do always like to have my studio in the basement - just in case. :grimacing:

I think you might be misunderstanding what the Peak/Summit is. Yes it has ā€œwavetablesā€ that you can use apart from the standard waveforms but the oscillators aren’t DSP, they are generated at incredibly high resolution in a special chip called an FPGA, and ā€œweak, limited, slowā€ as you described it is just totally inaccurate. It’s an unbelievably deep synthesis engine.

I’m not comparing the Novation to the Sequential, just responding to your post since I see a lot of people lately referring to the Peak/Summit as a ā€œwavetableā€ or digital synth, and while that’s partly true… its not really a good way to describe them. They are mostly analog (VCAs, filters, drive stages, etc) synths with analog-like waveforms generated at rates so high in the FPGA that they are mostly indistinguishable from an an analog waveform. It’s not the same as oscillators in a Virus etc.

That will do nicely!

You could do some Phil style room mic-ed drums in there too  Might need slight dampening though.

I think someone would have to have spent a lot of time with both synths to be able to answer the question of what one could do that the other couldn’t. I’ve never used either of the T synths from Sequential but I’ve used the Peak and Summit for at least… I don’t even know haha, 5 hours a week on average maybe since 2017, and it’s incredibly flexible and rewarding to program. I would love to have some time with the Teo, it looks amazing too. However, after watching quite a few videos of the Take 5, I do not think it is as flexible or capable as the Peak/Summit architecture. Doesn’t mean it sounds less awesome, or that it’s not also very flexible.

I don’t own an OSCar (though I’ve fixed one for a friend), but while the oscillators are technically digital, they’re a little different from pretty much anything else that I’ve seen. I wouldn’t call them wavetable (though they are generated from a combination of a CPU clock (from a Z80 processor) and a ton of CMOS logic ICs. (lots of CD405x muxes too for combining various digital signals) Digital in the sense of 0V being 0 and +V being 1. (so a bit different than say being generated fully by the processor) I actually have a couple of oscillators that generate some of the waveforms in similar (though much simpler ways). I’m guessing that the Peak and Summit are doing all of this on their FPGAs, but in exactly the same way since one FPGA can do all the logic of the tens of logic ICs in the OSCar. Definitely an interesting synth and method for creating the waveforms. The schematics are readily available online for anyone looking to see more. (just google image search for OSCar schematics)

There are specific threads for each of these instruments at the center of this back and forth. Maybe one or more of those would be the place for listing pros / cons, etc. as opposed to the latest purchases thread?

You’re not the person formerly known as Encephalitislerthargi are you? Sounds extremely familiar.

That is already in the plan - using four Polyend Percs to hammer the drums!
