What's your latest purchase & what are your intentions with it? [pics ftw] (Part 2)

Ok it’s finally here!!

The hardware FM monster that is the TG77!

Spent the day re-cabling to integrate it - got the 8 individual outputs & the 2 stereo pair “mixes” into the patchbay, and re-jiggled some midi routing to get midi in and out, and also got Patch Base going on the iPad running the control surface for the TG77 so I can program from my desk on the other side of the room by my master keyboard & mixer.

Midi control is via MioXL & iPad via WiFi- was a bit of a headache to setup but I’ve cracked it now - and I’ve got real-time control over all (most?) of the parameters on the unit and I never have to touch the panel or look at the screen! Works like a charm so far.

Next objective - utilize the 8 separate outs, and start making some dope FM drum kits!! Not familiar enough with the architecture of the TG77 and the Patch Base control panel yet, but imagine I’ll be making some custom multi-channel midi control panel for the drum kit, probably on MidiDesigner (although someone said Loopy Pro can also be a midi controller so might check that option out…).

One thing to note, the TG77 outputs have a fair bit of electronic noise present (hence me cranking the master volumes to max on the panel). It’s not so bad as to make me regret the purchase, but it does make me want to maximise the gain staging during programming to maximise the SNR.

Also the overall sound of many of the presets on the unit are a little “muffled” to my ears… i.e. lacking sparkle. I suspect I can program better sounds with more zing and crispness - now I’ve figured out the Patch Base editor I’m sure I’ll be on my way to making some cracking tones! Super excited!

There is this joke in Polish that probably has its variants across different languages.

There is group of children, not even ten years old, being asked by their teacher, who they want to be, when they grow up. And there is forest of hands and children shouting one over another: „an astronaut!”, „journalist!”, „a doctor!”, „firefighter!”, „a cop!”. But there is one kid sitting silent, hands down, and teacher notices him.

  • And you, John? Who would you like to be, when you grow up?

And John seems to know already.

  • A homeless bum.
  • What?!
  • A homeless bum.
  • But John, don’t you want to be someone, who people look up to or put their faith in? Something ambitious? Why homeless bum?
  • Well, I will be drinking alcohol from the moment I wake up, I will not have to worry about going to work, not have to worry about making my bed, I can puke all over myself and nobody notices, people will help me in their pity and when police arrests me there will be no downgrade to my life.

And teacher listened speechless.

Fast forward to John’s middle age. John stands at the edge of a roof top, dangerously close to the edge, looking at state of the world that he grow up next to.

He looks far away in the distance, at the shore, where is located disgustingly expensive marina with the largest private yachts the world has seen. He looks at the hills in distance, where rich people have enclave only for them across many hectares of golf fields, ponds and exclusive restaurants. He looks at shopping centers and fancy restaurants in city. At expensive mansions between city and nature. And he knows… he knows… that everything that could be bought in his eyesight, he already owns. And when his private helicopter heats its engines behind him, to take him to his mansion from his private helipad from the top of his company’s roof top, he asks himself this one important question:

  • Where the fuck did I go wrong?!

Anyway. I am downsizing for some time now. But my decisions took some strange turns. And somehow… I ended up looking at this, asking myself similar question:

Intentions: to make some music, of course. While I am not yet set, what happens with MS-5, which is kind of my dream come true instrument (and I never wanted original SH-5, since it is too big for me), this one kind of also takes too much space for me, but the sound is there. Regarding DT 2. I never was so much fixated on having stereo, and two mono tracks gave me some things that are impossible anyway in single stereo track, but then… I had very big problem, when selling my Blofeld, because I love comb filters so much. So this is this. DT 2 will be at the end of my chain ST-DN-DT2, but I am heavily heavily contemplating adding Prophet X in front of DT2 and then connecting ST and DN parallel to DT2. Whole setup would be so much easier and - ekhm! (looking at Prophet X) - so much more portable, if I could just go thru USB hub and have ST-DN parallel with DT2 (with only PX at its input) without mixer.

Are your kids looking to gain a 43 year-old older brother? They’d immediately gain an aunt and nephew too!
I can get those adoption papers drawn up fast as well.
So dad, or nay?

Massive thanks to @HBIII for selling me this beautiful Linnstrument. It’ll be well looked-after. My intentions are to fire up Kyma and see where the combination takes me.

Intentions: seeing if the Tracker workflow adds value to my music making process and if this hypothetical Digitakt+Syntakt (samples, synthesis, p-locks) combo is even close to the Elektron workflow.

Three days in, the answer to that question is “no, not at all” but I’m still having fun exploring the new workflow.

Gotta wait for my screen replacement, SD card reader and additional RAM now. But it’s been unused.

Piece of hip hop history and hopefully something I can learn

An Artinoise Re.corder…I’m full of wind and I have synths so an EWI seemed like a marriage made in heaven.
This is obviously a cheap gateway drug prior to going full-in on an e-sax or some such in the future when the GAS gets too much.

I went for green obviously…

Looks fun! There doesn’t seem to be a thread on here about this.

As someone who has toyed with the idea of getting a wind controller over the years, but resisted because of the cost of controllers (and not having any idea if I’d enjoy it), I’d love to hear how you find it.

I find myself making lots of brassy sounds on my eurorack (Akemie’s Taiko is great for this) and have always thought it would be fun to pair a wind controller with those sound experiments.

Neat! What’s the box with display in the background?

Intention: to swap between it and the newly bought Tracker+ and figure out which one I enjoy using the most. I don’t see myself keeping both.

This thing is so sick from a hardware perspective but I just don’t love the tracker workflow

Picked up an Emagic AMT8 for a bargain price courtesy of the Alladin’s cave that is Melbourne’s Music Swop Shop. It’s an 8x8 midi interface with serial and USB ports that, despite being over 20 years old and built when Macs were still on PPC by a company that no longer exists, is fully compatible with the latest Apple silicon Macs courtesy of drivers published by Apple itself.

That’s because not long after Emagic made this device they were acquired by Apple, which killed their hardware line because it just wanted their Logic code. My guess is that those Emagic engineers are still at Apple and have a softspot for this device and quietly pushed out the drivers themselves last year.

Anyway, another cool thing is that it also operates in standalone mode, which is how I’m using it. With a Bluetooth adapter plugged into one of the I/Os my intensions are to route all manner of midi signals in and out of my dark trinity, midi controllers and iOS apps without giving myself a headache.

It feels pretty easy to wrap my head around actually. it’s essentially a step sequencer in a spreadsheet format. It’s a bit clunkier than the Elektron workflow though since there’s no scaling or length per track. So if you set a pattern length of 128 steps, you need to do a lot of copy/pasting to ensure that all 128 steps are consistent (if that’s your thing) even though your kick pattern is just 16 steps long. There’s also no conditional trigs so you’re basically ending up with 128 patterns whether you like it or not.

But the actual workflow of the tracker as a whole is pretty easy to learn and get relatively fast on. I’m only on day 4 or so, so I’m obviously still learning. But I’m definitely spending more time with the Mini than with the Tracker+ so far, simply because it follows me wherever I go and has a built-in battery.

Welcome to the club with the Linnstrument. I had not considered its portability when I bought it. Even better than the Push 3. Also Roger Linn does a weekly webcast you can attend. I’ve never done it because it’s on Tuesdays during the day and I have to work. He offers an incredible amount of support for his baby and will answer your questions personally.

Midlife crisis style going back to my roots and impulsively bought a SP 404 OG (in horrible cosmetic shape, but should be fully functionable) 4 days after getting a mint SP-303.

My intentions are to restore the 404 and keep it forever.

Regretted selling my 303 with all the fixings (3 SM cards, plus ripcord)

My intentions training in the sp forums dojo, and trying to get my sample sword sharp. hopefully never get rid of this too.

Yes still got my mkII as well, but wanna test my ears and see if its the nostalgia or actual sound that makes me miss my former friends!
