What's your latest purchase & what are your intentions with it? [pics ftw] (Part 2)

And one more. I hope this is my last purchase this year.
Ibanez SR5FMDX-EGL

Just because.

In fact, my old bass stayed in another country two years ago. I miss it and can’t bring it to my place. And I couldn’t resist when I saw 20% discount on this bloody awesome premium limited 35th anniversary edition green funky five string beast.

my friend is the head of IT at a massive video game company and they actually measure this stuff with their HVAC and he can access the data on the servers at any given time and he saw the progression about how the air quality deteriorated as the day went on and he decided to work from home exclusively after that.

My son loves small synths. He does most of his production in Ableton, but when he uses hardware, he prefers smaller fun synths. I gave him my Liven 8-Bit, a small Mackie VLZ mixer, an RD-8 MkII for drums, and he’s got a few other things (Volca Drum, etc.) with some pedals. I thought he was due for a new toy in the lineup, so I ordered him an S-1. Now that I’m watching a bunch of demos and stuff for it I think I want one too  Love the chop and draw features for example. Didn’t realize it could do all that. Anyway, I think he’ll like it.

How old is he? Curious to learn what he thinks of it. I applaud them for including chop and draw but I don’t really see myself using them, except maybe if the stock sounds start to bore me…

Some of the sounds I’ve been hearing with those modes come close to shift-register pulse-trains like Atari type sounds, (which I love) so I could see using those quite a bit

My son is 23. He raps, had a punk-ish band for a while, and does production for a lot of other local musicians here (Seattle area) and LA area occasionally. He’s always worked more in the ol’ box though. I’ve been getting him hardware for years trying to get him using it more. His brain gravitates more toward the little quickly accessible synths used in strange ways, so things like this work well for him. He didn’t use the Elektrons that I gave him, so we traded some things around (because my daughter WILL use the Elektrons). He likes to make music with hardware, but not if the hardware gets in the way. He’s an immediate result sort of person. Really good ears though, so he knows how to make things fit into what he’s doing.

Actually took me 100% by surprise when he was maybe 15. I had no idea he was even into music period, and then all of a sudden he told me to check out a rap track that he did, and it was amazing. Completely blew me away at the time because there was zero indication. Ever since I’ve been throwing hardware, software, computers, gear his way. He also started playing guitar, singing, etc.

Anyway, I’ll post back once he gets to play with it.

That’s so cool about your kiddo.

I bought my kid a JDXI when he was 14, 4 years ago. He barely looked at it. I used it a few times and got the bug. Four years later, I’ve bought and sold a jillion pieces of music equipment as I just love the stuff and he always thinks its all cool but he never spends any time with any of our stuff.

I told him when I was a kid we had no money to get me even a cheap drum set, so try and take advantage of our situation with all this gear…but alas, he just has no desire. Damn, wish I was the kid!

Hydrasynth Silver.

I’ve had the desktop model, I really loved the engine but sold it to eventually replace with that Poly AT keyboard.

With the silver model and Perfect Circuits discount, it’s finally time. I think it looks sick as hell.

I do hear “the hydra sound” and I love it for that. It’s a really really good pairing to my Prophet 6 in that it can stay out of the way in this wonderfully phasey kind of wash behind the P6.

Nice! Yeah, my kids are all pretty interested, but all in their own way. One daughter plays bass and guitars quite well. She actually built a guitar out of an antler that she bought. (My uncle is a luthier, so he and my dad helped her build it.) My other daughter is more into video games, but likes to play around and make sounds with me once in a while. My other daughter likes things like Pocket Operators, Otomatones, etc. I gave her my Cobalt 8x though, and she also has a Model:Cycles. She messes with them here and there, and is always curious about how to do things on them, or play certain lines from her favorite songs, etc. My son is a monster though.

When I was a kid we didn’t have a lot of money. We had a piano, a C64, (later Amiga and PC) and occasionally this or that synthesizer or other elecrtronic sound making device. So there were ways to be creative musically. But nothing like what’s available these days. Plus we lived in the woods, so I got outside a lot. My dad’s friend gave me a MicroMoog when I was about 15 maybe, which is when I REALLY got into this stuff.

I absolutely love the look of silver SE models. Huge fan of my e25 Elektrons, I like the Hydrasynth but I never really thought it was the best looking synth out there, even though the UI is excellent. A silver Explorer version would be an insta buy for me but looks like that one isn’t happening.

This arrived in the mail the other day. Got it preowned, so at least I saved a few buckos.

Intentions are to see how many pedals I can replace with this little box and see how far it takes me production wise.
So far I’ve really been enjoying sound design on this thing, but the UI is a major pain the butt. The software editor mitigates alot of frustrations but even that could use some major work.

I love the flexible, modular nature of this pedal and how you can basically build all these complex modulations and delay lines and feed it all into a tube preamp or cassette emulator which, to my ears, sounds really f-ing good.

Here’s the video that sold me on the pedal, featuring Analog Rytm amongst others.

I love the feeling I get when open my parcel tracking and it shows me this:

Hopefully it’ll arrive today and I will post some pictures of what it is! (very excited)

  • Power Block to simplify power delivery on my Jaspers stand
  • Expression Slider to play more with CV / EXP inputs on Elektrons and / or pedals
  • Volume knob for independent headphones volume control on gear, where I want to keep local headphones connected permanently and at the same time keep the main outs at appropriate levels (mainly my piano practice keyboard)

Ok it’s finally here!!

The hardware FM monster that is the TG77!

Spent the day re-cabling to integrate it - got the 8 individual outputs & the 2 stereo pair “mixes” into the patchbay, and re-jiggled some midi routing to get midi in and out, and also got Patch Base going on the iPad running the control surface for the TG77 so I can program from my desk on the other side of the room by my master keyboard & mixer.

Midi control is via MioXL & iPad via WiFi- was a bit of a headache to setup but I’ve cracked it now - and I’ve got real-time control over all (most?) of the parameters on the unit and I never have to touch the panel or look at the screen! Works like a charm so far.

Next objective - utilize the 8 separate outs, and start making some dope FM drum kits!! Not familiar enough with the architecture of the TG77 and the Patch Base control panel yet, but imagine I’ll be making some custom multi-channel midi control panel for the drum kit, probably on MidiDesigner (although someone said Loopy Pro can also be a midi controller so might check that option out…).

One thing to note, the TG77 outputs have a fair bit of electronic noise present (hence me cranking the master volumes to max on the panel). It’s not so bad as to make me regret the purchase, but it does make me want to maximise the gain staging during programming to maximise the SNR.

Also the overall sound of many of the presets on the unit are a little “muffled” to my ears… i.e. lacking sparkle. I suspect I can program better sounds with more zing and crispness - now I’ve figured out the Patch Base editor I’m sure I’ll be on my way to making some cracking tones! Super excited!

There is this joke in Polish that probably has its variants across different languages.

There is group of children, not even ten years old, being asked by their teacher, who they want to be, when they grow up. And there is forest of hands and children shouting one over another: „an astronaut!”, „journalist!”, „a doctor!”, „firefighter!”, „a cop!”. But there is one kid sitting silent, hands down, and teacher notices him.

  • And you, John? Who would you like to be, when you grow up?

And John seems to know already.

  • A homeless bum.
  • What?!
  • A homeless bum.
  • But John, don’t you want to be someone, who people look up to or put their faith in? Something ambitious? Why homeless bum?
  • Well, I will be drinking alcohol from the moment I wake up, I will not have to worry about going to work, not have to worry about making my bed, I can puke all over myself and nobody notices, people will help me in their pity and when police arrests me there will be no downgrade to my life.

And teacher listened speechless.

Fast forward to John’s middle age. John stands at the edge of a roof top, dangerously close to the edge, looking at state of the world that he grow up next to.

He looks far away in the distance, at the shore, where is located disgustingly expensive marina with the largest private yachts the world has seen. He looks at the hills in distance, where rich people have enclave only for them across many hectares of golf fields, ponds and exclusive restaurants. He looks at shopping centers and fancy restaurants in city. At expensive mansions between city and nature. And he knows… he knows… that everything that could be bought in his eyesight, he already owns. And when his private helicopter heats its engines behind him, to take him to his mansion from his private helipad from the top of his company’s roof top, he asks himself this one important question:

  • Where the fuck did I go wrong?!

Anyway. I am downsizing for some time now. But my decisions took some strange turns. And somehow… I ended up looking at this, asking myself similar question:

Intentions: to make some music, of course. While I am not yet set, what happens with MS-5, which is kind of my dream come true instrument (and I never wanted original SH-5, since it is too big for me), this one kind of also takes too much space for me, but the sound is there. Regarding DT 2. I never was so much fixated on having stereo, and two mono tracks gave me some things that are impossible anyway in single stereo track, but then… I had very big problem, when selling my Blofeld, because I love comb filters so much. So this is this. DT 2 will be at the end of my chain ST-DN-DT2, but I am heavily heavily contemplating adding Prophet X in front of DT2 and then connecting ST and DN parallel to DT2. Whole setup would be so much easier and - ekhm! (looking at Prophet X) - so much more portable, if I could just go thru USB hub and have ST-DN parallel with DT2 (with only PX at its input) without mixer.

Are your kids looking to gain a 43 year-old older brother? They’d immediately gain an aunt and nephew too!
I can get those adoption papers drawn up fast as well.
So dad, or nay?

Massive thanks to @HBIII for selling me this beautiful Linnstrument. It’ll be well looked-after. My intentions are to fire up Kyma and see where the combination takes me.
