Unfiltered Audio - Battalion (soft drum synth)

I am REALLY liking this plugin a lot. I’m powerusing it for the last few weeks, after it’s been sitting in plugin folder for months. It really has an Elektron/exploring feel too it. Great fun.

And, it’s great to read some tweaks/improvements are on the way. I was actually searching for info on the minor spike on opening the GUI (on my new M4 pro/24gig too).

Keep up the great work!

Just bought this for iOS and desktop and enjoying the sounds I’m getting out of it.
Great work, and thanks for taking away my GAS for more drum machines !
Regarding the sequencer and pattern export, as people have mentioned … not really necessary for me, but being able to switch between patterns with quantisation (maybe a global pattern, instead of 8 individual patterns) would be really useful. I would then jam with that and export the audio into my DAW / Elektrons

All the code is finally in place for pattern save/load, switching, quantization, etc. It was a real bear. Behind the scenes, Battalion has a couple-thousand parameters. We made it so that you can automate everything, even down to LFO depths on parameters.

Anyway, we made the totally awesome (as a product) and dumb (as programmers who have to implement it) decision that the patterns should be Elektron-style and contain everything so you can have full genre leaps from pattern to pattern with instant changes. It took a lot of attempts to get the architecture right, but I’m pretty sure everything is working now.

Right now we’re in UI/UX. We have good plans for keeping this all manageable and intuitive, but we move slowly on things like this.

I am seriously impressed not only with your product but with your willingness to engage with a community that can sometimes be whiny and demanding but who, I think overall, shares my enthusiasm for this app. Thank you for keeping us posted on development details and I hope the work ahead goes smoothly.

I love it, planning to use it more as soon as i go on a vacation. Making nice evolving drum patterns will be enjoyable, thanks

Little bit of dreaming here but I’d love to see the two parts ( sound gen engines and sequencer) available to use separately. Or even just the sequencer as a standalone product. Think those generative features would be awesome being sent to hardware.
Oh I may be missing this but midi learn as well.

Does that mean that changes made on a pattern do not affect other patterns ? This creates more problems than anything in my opinion (in Elektron device as well). I wish you’d make a way to keep the sounds consistent across pattern, in order to create evolving multiple- pattern sequences without having to go back and forth between patterns to have the same sounds.

Nice one ! Thanks for your hard work. I have been noticing a bit of audio glitching (not related to buffer size, or CPU which is at 17% or so in Live 12.2) on my M1 mac when I open and close the UI window or switching some parameters. Any ideas ?

EDIT just to confirm, I’m not getting the same audioglitches in the same project from pigments, overbridge etc, just when I open and close the battalion UI

Ye I somewhat agree - would be good to have both - an option like the performance kit thing on digitone 2 , where the sounds stay the same across a range of patterns - would definitely be a good thing for certain use cases. Happy to hear patterns are coming though , will make an already ace instrument much more useable for me

Glad you ended up going for it!

For those who are worried about workflow, in the code the pattern manager considers parameters in groups: Voice, Sequencer, Mixer, and Effects. Everything will be saved to each pattern, but the user will have the ability (via global and per-preset options) to choose what gets loaded on pattern changes. We have an EDIT ALL button (active by default on new presets) where all knob changes get written to every pattern. That way, all patterns will start from the same spot if you want them to. When importing existing pre-pattern presets, there’s a global option for “Load preset only to Pattern 1” “Load preset to all patterns” or “Load preset to pattern 1, load parameters to all patterns”.

We have other really exciting pattern remixing things ready in the code. For now, don’t worry too much about workflow until we get this in beta. We’re considering a lot with all of this, which is why it’s taking so long.

EDIT: Also, patterns will respect your Lock settings.

@trickyflemming Just wondering, will there be a quick way to clear a pattern and all its associated sequencer info (while keeping everything else intact)? This is something I’ve been hoping for since the initial release.

Another thought: after creating a set of patterns, it would be very cool to be able to “lock” (keep) them while browsing/importing sounds/patches from another preset.

You really thought this through! (More than Elektron did, it seems like). Can’t wait to try that

:raised_hands: ok thanks for the extra info … can’t wait, sounds brilliant

I’d love to hear what you make with it! Vortices is one of my favorites over the past few years.

Yes, it’s set up so that pattern data is tacked to the end of the preset, making it functionally independent from all of the voice/effect/mix data.

Yep! The code for this has been there. I wanted to put it out in a quick update, but I couldn’t decide a good, safe spot for a nuke button on the current interface. It will be part of the patterns update since we’re going to have a lot more breathing room for “dangerous” operations. It stores it in the undo history when you clear, but still it’s an annoying thing to tap by accident.

Wow. I’m soo glad to hear about all the work you are still putting in to Battalion. It’s pretty unique even in the overcrowded world of VSTi:s, and extremely flexible, powerful and fun! In my opinion it’s already the most powerful drum/percussion softsynth out there by quite a bit, and sounds like with the upcoming additions that gap will widen significantly more. I hope you guys sell ridiculous amounts of licenses for Battalion!

Hi folks,
I’m trying to get a true, non-repeating 50% probability on a continuous 1-step pattern in Battalion.
When I use the per-step PROB slider set to 50%, the resulting “random” sequence seems repetitive.
Does anyone know why the per-step PROB modulation seems to generate a fixed, repeating pattern? Is this by design?

After a few sessions with the demo, I’m in! …such a good plugin.
