And while on it, being able to save and recall patterns separately would be even better ![]()
Right now I’m using Octachron as sequencer because it gives me a clean slate right away, but I would love to dig in deeper into the Battalion sequencer as it looks lovely. It’s just a bit of a pain in the workflow to remove everything individually when hitting random or when loading up a factory preset.
Anyone an idea where I could find the Unfiltered Audio EULA or Terms of Service??
Can’t find it on the UA (also PA) website, nothing in the manuals (checked Battalion and LION), also looked everywhere on the computer. Do I have to run an installer to get the EULA?
What are you seeking in the EULA?
Well, I’m a bit researching about the legal situation of sampling VSTs, like i.e. sampling Battalion and putting this online (non-commercial).
My understanding is it’s quite clear when it comes to already sample-based content. It’s prohibited (unless having explicit permission) because it’s basically just repacking copyrighted samples.
But it’s far less clear to me when it comes to synthesized sounds.
LION probably is a better example than Battalion. LION has some fairly unique Oscillators, let’s say I’d multisample the “SumSyn” OSC and put this online in some sampler format.
Is that illegal because it’s essentially “stealing” the Oscillator?
I tend to consider it illegal, but ain’t sure at all, from what I could see it’s often a case-to-case scenario.
For that reason I wanted to have a look what Unfiltered Audio states about it in the EULA, as it might potentially make things very clear already.
I have the code in place for clearing entire sequences either on individual tracks or whole projects. Currently, you can alt-click the X in the sequencer window to clear all the stepped parameters (Pitch, Vel, Shift, etc.), but A) That doesn’t help people on iOS, and B) That doesn’t remove triggers.
We’re kicking around some graphic design ideas for this. The page is already a bit crowded, and we’ve also never had a “nuke” type button on our plugins. We will get it into a build real soon.
Right, the samples are the first time where I feel like we might need to put a EULA somewhere, as the samples are licensed to us via NI. My personal opinion is pretty straightforward: yes, don’t repackage commercial samples, but if you’re mangling a sample and then running it through distortion + filters and it’s completely unrecognizable, I don’t think anyone will come after you. It’s that annoying grey area though that we should clarify (What if the sample is an octave down and partially masked by an oscillator? etc.)
For everything else, we’ve never cared about people sampling our synths or effects. I think it’s really cool, actually, as it makes our efforts seem more legitimate when we’re seeing “Battalion” next to “TR-808” on sample pack stores. And, truth be told, I think the power of Battalion is less in the specific sound as much as the control set and malleability. I don’t have the mindset of “ugh, someone made 40 kicks from Battalion and now we’re going to lose sales”.

i hope other devs/creators see this and take some notes on how to engage with the community. Always appreciate your responses and hard work pushing Battalion to new heights. Rock on @trickyflemming
So happy about this! I appreciate getting some updates. I really want to go all in using Battalion as my centerpiece, but was hesitant because the option of nuking the sequencer was lacking. Knowing this, I won’t give it a second thought anymore
Thanks!!
WOW, this is such a classy response in every possible way ![]()
Thank you very much, highly appreciated! ![]()
Hey everyone! Spent the last few days combing through this thread to learn as much as I can about Battalion. Been using it for some time but I feel I’m only scratching the surface of this incredible beast. I am mainly using my MaxMsp rig to sequence stuff. I actually built a custom sequencer to work mainly with Battalion. One thing I’m interested in if there is a way to get something like a “Trigless trig” function? I’d love to use the built in sequencer to sequence modulation, but would want the actual sound to be triggered exclusively by my sequencer. Cheers!
Yes. It would be EXTREMELY nice if the mod-lanes would run/modulate when the sequencer is running, regardless if the trig is coming from the internal sequencer or from a midi note (or if there’s no trig at all…). And also step in the trig modes from both internal and external triggers. Depending on current implementation, it might be hard to do though…
Agree. Another area where Battalion reminds me of Machinedrum. Every time I see a “325 carefully curated high quality samples from Machinedrum”, I’m like - yeah, that completely misses the point of MDUW…
I’m completely addicted to this machine. It’s everything I wanted from a drum vst and seeing how involved the devs are in interacting with the suggestions here makes me so happy cause I’ll likely be using Battalion for years to come.
Here’s a little jam from earlier with a preset I started working on while on the bus today - I’m testing out some new algos within a drum sequencer I’m building in MaxMsp. I’m also building a little control interface into it. I got the mutes and solos built, now I’m designing a performance page controller. Battalion lends itself so beautifully to my idea of live performance and this is probably the most fun I’ve ever had jamming around. Been messing around for hours!
A mini-review of the iOS version—I’ve been traveling and put in about a dozen hours on the iPad, and I’m really enjoying it:
- The sounds are great, and the sound engines are playful and flexible in a similar way to the Syntakt workflow, but with a very different range of sounds. Some of the synth parameters are a little more mysterious than Syntakt.
- The effects have a lot of character. The “glitch” delay, especially, adds really interesting textures, and the filters and many comb filters and varieties of distortion add a lot to the core sounds.
- The sampler engines are much more interesting than I’d been expecting—cloner does spectral processing to humanize samples, the granular is interesting and works well with imported wavetables, phase mirror is a cool concept if a little trickier to learn. They are great at glitchy sounds and textures.
- The sequencer favors people who like randomness a lot more than I do, and I wanted at one point to set up a more familiar (X:Y, fill sequencing, live recording) sequencer via MIDI control like Drambo. That wound up being fiddly, and little tricks (probability to 0 for steps to skip; routing modulation through the macro2 control, s&h lfos for humanizing just 1 or 2 parameters) are getting me around fine.
- The euclidean + pattern permutation + manual steps, variable length, etc, seems well-designed for what it is. Rather than going for more precise control over midi, I’ve found the workflow that’s most fun for me: making short breaks and sound chains with variations to sample into my Digitakt.
With all this, I prefer a more traditional drum machine feature set for primary use, and for me it’s going to be mostly for playful exploration and as a loop sample source. The fun factor is very high with this one, and I’m loving the beats I’ve gotten out of it.
Been giving Battalion a go - really fun drum plugin! I’m not sure how to integrate the sequencer into a performance-based setup in Live though. There’s basic things I want to do that I can’t figure out - specifically clearing a sequencer pattern, or even changing to a different pattern on the current preset.
Maybe that’s contrary to the ethos of the plugin given it’s oriented more toward probability & randomization though?
I know I can send MIDI to Battalion from a separate track, but I do also want the modulation lanes. I haven’t yet tried using the sequencer for only modulation while sending MIDI externally, hopefully that works.
It does not. (Yet…)
Thanks! Also sounds like preset change via program change or MIDI note is not yet possible either based on earlier responses in here too. Bit of a bummer but can work around it.
Please share any details of workarounds!
Oops sorry, I meant that more as ‘will deal with it’ - but if I do figure anything out I’ll follow up here! I may just end up bouncing to audio.
Couple of things that I think need fixing/improving:
- The left/right arrows for Previous Sample/Next Sample. They should move through the samples in the last selected folder, instead of defaulting always to the Factory samples. I want to be able to choose a sample from my folder then step through them whilst my track is playing to audition them.
- When loading a sample, be able to preview the sounds directly from the folder as you select them. Otherwise choosing a sample is not easy!
I’m gonna send a feature request to the team.
If you’d like these things added, please email the devs too!
