Torso Electronics S-4 (sculpting sampler)

That screen is quite lovely.

Great videos people! Keep em coming!!

Seeing the videos has convinced me to pull the trigger! I’m really impressed with the sound quality, definitely not a super-hifi thing but it has a nice character.

I hope they allow for the track resonator/eq to be swapped out for a more bread-and-butter filter (however limited it may be). The resonator sounds lovely, but it doesn’t sound varied enough for me to want to use it all of the time.

yes :slightly_smiling_face:

Does it have live looping already? And if so, can it be quantized?
And how are the FX quality?
Thinking that this can be a great octatrack substitute for a performance mixer

I feel it will depend on the sample used.

Yes. Check the manual page 48 and following. Not much use as of now though (except for internal resampling I guess), until they implemented proper clock sync with external gear…
[edit]: The sync-feature is the main development priority atm and they expect to update end of june, as by their discord…

That’s great, I’ll definitely keep an eye on the development of the S4 as I think I might buy it once it’s fully ready

The scale the resonator is quantised to makes a world of difference to the sound, one included scale is called overtone, and that can be used more subtly/ take you closer to a bread and butter filter

Finally a good demo of the tape engine. Anyone have $900 I can borrow?

Can you connect the tx6 as an audio interface to S4?

not my video. I’m in second batch!

i love the granular capailities but a hefty amount of money i can’t justify to spend alone just so that i can play with those.

if quantized recording works properly and even comes remotely close to the octatrack performance mixer experience (so at least i can use for transitions, even with a single track) i’d definitely pull the trigger to buy it because i already love how the device sounds and looks a lot!

P.S: because i recently sold my OT and DT1 to finance a DT2 and ā€œanotherā€ device. now i’m desperately trying to write my own Norns script that would act as a quantized looper, i have some progress but it’s a whole body of work i’d rather not spend time on instead of creating music heheh

Finally got mine. But now I am stuck with an empty project after encountering a bug (saw a video yesterday on youtube, but already taken down I guess) while twiddling a knob in the project list screen. Basically the S-4 gets into this blank state which doesn’t go away after rebooting it.

Anyone has the same and managed to fix it?

upd: somehow it got fixed after unplugging and plugging back the power supply eh?..

I’m really enjoying my first day with the S4. Feels to me like this box was made for ambient… exactly my thing.

What I find a bit strange is that when long samples are loaded from the internal memory, only a short piece (estimated at 10-15 seconds) is loaded. I didn’t find anything about it in the manual. Only 6 min sample buffer is mentioned there, which apparently only applies to recordings… strange… hopefully that will be changed.

As far as I’ve understood, the power button shut down is only some kind of sleep mode. Only unplugging the power supply does a real restart.

I’ve identified a potential breakout through technical resistance on my gas chart
