Yeah got my DHL notification yesterday, apparently estimated to be delivered tomorrow but I think that’s ambitious given I’m in the US. We’ll see.

Looks like tomorrow is the day people will have it in their hands, would have me included except I’m not in

Looking forward to some impressions.

Me too. Much better than baseless speculation and FUD.

I’m unfortunately disappointed… Took delivery of the S-4 this afternoon, plugged it in - and the screen doesn’t work :frowning: Powering it on and off seems to work ok so I guess it’ll be an easy fix… that involves shipping back to Denmark from the US.

S4 explorations: MOOD (mk1:)

I kind of like it actually, mine arrived yesterday and been noodling. The 4 effect engines are great, I hope (or i guess already confirmed?) they will add more, i can already see that theres an option to select a different effect for each slot. The granulator is pretty flexible, the resonator gets some pretty beautiful results and the distortion is good too. I think especially the reverb and the distortion though would benefit from a couple more algorithms - but im sure it wouldnt be that hard to add some more reverb modes in the firmware. I would really like a kind of ā€œampā€ type distortion in there. For the ā€œresonatorā€ slot some kind of other spectrally transforming or vododer-esque effect would be great.

its simple to use it, i couldnt find the manual and didn’t watch a lot of clips about it, but everything is reasonably easy to grasp, took me a tiny while to find out that you can double tap a bunch of buttons to get extra menus, for example on the 4 effect slots and thats also how you adjust the mod sources

even though i like it, it’ still pretty barebones though as others have talked about before, when you press the ā€œperformā€ ā€œtempā€ or ā€œsceneā€ buttons, theres a ā€œcoming soonā€ message on the screen lol. Built in mic is not very good but I guess useful for in a pinch, have had some fun with that.

price is a bit steep for what it is I gotta admit though. Hope they will cook with the firmwares, its already pretty good and you can very quickly make great collage-y, evolving stuff or design sounds, and it’s fun, i see the potential in the s-4 for sure. Also the visuals on screen I find aesthetically very pleasing. The knobs are not the best, feel like they could have a tiny bit more resistance, feels a bit cheap.

So yeah, not bad, I don’t think this is worth the money with this current firmware though - needs the scenes/arrangement functionality, and more options for effects. I’m glad I got it though, I think it looks cool and its pretty inspiring, and I like that the overall ā€œfocusā€ of it seems to be quick experimentation and sounddesign. can see myself making sketches on there away from the computer

has anyone that has it tried it with the t-1 sequencer?

Just got my S4, but as soon as I have time I’m going to try it with the T1.

I’ll note that that the build quality is really good, but it doesn’t feel the same way the T1 does; the buttons are clackier like Elektron buttons, the knobs (regardless of being smooth) feel very different (might want to replace those with something with a little more grip), and the enclosure has a different texture from the T1, I think something similar to the original Elektron dark trinity style boxes, where the T1 feels more like a plain steel plate. It’s also slightly thicker than the T1.

None of this is bad, in fact most of it is good, but I was surprised because I sort of assumed they would use a lot of the same parts.

Just received the S4 too (France for those interesting). Agree with above comments about the hardware, it is not in the same park as the T1. However, with a first mixed impression about the encoders for example, in use, they are really interesting, mixing precision and reaction depending on how you turn them, pretty good feeling.
Just tried it a few hours (not with the T1 for the moment sorry) and the first important thing is how smart is the overall interface. Everything is logic and smooth, you don’t need the manual at all to start doing really good things. The screen is delicious, everything is clear and well thought.
Something missing from this first contact?

  • I wasn’t sure before meeting it but yes, slices would be great indeed.
  • Maybe some kind of zoom functions, just like on the 1010Music Blackbox, that would improve the overall flow.
Overall, can’t wait to turn it on again!

any insight on how the playing feels WITHOUT a midi controller/sequencer?

is it playable in a useful sense even without, just being clock synced to a master?

My first time noodling around with the S-4.
The sound and ergonomics are great. The operation is super intuitive. You only need the manual in rare cases.
