Tonverk: technical Q&A

Since the TV has 8 tracks, it should work to set auto channel to track 10. Right?

Just a question as I’m not sure entirely how it works, but is it possible the direct jump/start/temp options could work for external devices as well? Ie a Digitone 2 connected, both devices on a 16 beat pattern, tonverk changes on the 4th beat, could it also jump to the 4th beat on the Digitone?

I feel like not as it probably just sends a signal to change and nothing else, which would be disappointing as I was very excited about this feature only to realize I can’t really use it.

I know it would work if sequencing the Digitone in the Tonverk, but that would be extremely limiting to the track options I could have between the two devices.

Elektron let me know that normalized samples will default peak around -22db in order to provide maximum headroom for the device.

This is good to know because there are a ton of ways to gainstage in this thing. I dug deeper into the project files and focused on a kick sample on pattern 1. If you look at that, The drum track is set to 127 volume in the mixer (default is 100). The kick has maxed overdrive in the Amp section, and its effected by a compressor with a healthy amount of makeup gain.

Then it its bus1 which has a maxed out level. That hits the master which has a compressor with even more makeup gain applied. The actual level coming out of the master bus has been reduced to 72.

So where am I going with this? - this box has a ton of gain staging options and is going to output low volume until you dial them in how you want them.

Ok another interesting thing from Elektron = the input A and B settings on the sampler currently do not adjust the incoming audio level. This is a bug and they are going to fix that. So that is good news because the sampling input is currently cranked up which introduces a little bit of noise. Once we can lower that, it will be easier to send a healthier signal from the source into the TV and the TV can be tweaked to not sample in so hot.

So I borked some files on my SD card, because I’m a dummy, and now the Tonverk doesn’t boot. Any advice? EDIT: FUNC-startup seems to be diagnostics, trying that

Hi guys, I try to solve this puzzle so hard that I need help!

So here is the deal, this is my main setup, idk its the best or not but how I use it now is this:
DT is drums, TV is sonic attack stuffs and DN2 is running thru TV with heavy effects for spacial structure/arrangement supporter sounds.

What I want to do is this:
I want to keep this setup as it is (if you see a better solution let me know please) however I want:

  1. Make random slices on DT and send it to TV to process it with sonic attack amazing rich and experimental effects
  2. Send this processed audio from TV to DT for resampling
  3. Slice up the resampled audio again in DT and get back to the state where I was with the general setup.

What do you think what I would need to solve this? Do I need a patchbay right?

That’s the routing I would pick too, I think running TV through the DT2 sounds amazing.

Maybe you could run the DT2 headphone jack into the DN input, and then switch those inputs on/off when you need? You might have to disconnect the TV->DT2 input when recording to avoid feedback tho

Speaking of that, what SD card is recommended if we upgraded?

I am guessing we just copy FAT format it and drag and drop the files over from the first card onto the new one?

Can we use external midi pad controls to trigger the slices of the drum subtracks ? Want to see if I can use Maschine or SPD SX Pro to trigger sounds.

It needs to be vFAT exFAT formatted and that’s it. Tonverk will boot without any content on it. If you want the factory content on it just copy over the Elektron folder.

FUNC + power on (rescue mode) and reset the active project, then you should be good to go!

nice, thanks. You think it matters the speed of the card? There are Ultra, Extreme options for sandisks.

Currently you can’t disable the midi channels for tracks 1-8, 9-12 (bus) 13-15 (sends) and master (16).

You can globally disable midi note receive though to prevent channels to respond.

The auto channel currently overrides the midi channel of a track/bus/send/master.

So if you select midi channel 2 as auto channel with track 4 selected, track 2 does not receive any midi, only track 4.

No, the bus channels, sends and mix channels occupy channel 9-16.

I hope all of this will be configurable like the other Elektrons in a soon to be released firmware update.

I’ve ordered a SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC UHS-II V90 (300 Mb/s) to find out  Will report here if it matters.

I pulled the card and mine is a Kingston Canvas Select Plus 64 gig micro sd card. The listed speed is 100 mb/s.

So now the question is if going with a faster speed will make a difference or will a 180 speed be plenty.

thanks @rtme , sounds like you have the Lambo headed your way…haha. Hopefully it makes a difference for you.

I would benchmark the load time for the stock factory project between the two cards. The one some people are complaining takes 2 minutes or whatever to load into RAM.

Another easy benchmark comparison test would be a project with 8 multi player tracks using heavy multisamples.

I went for a 128gb 200 mb/s Sandisk. I don’t need 256 gigs personally and 200 is pretty fast. So I will see if it makes a difference. I’m thinking getting the adapter out of the equation will be a good thing either way.

Thanks, mates! I’m dense, but I understand. Seems like this is a step in the right direction for power.

You can more or less ignore the 45W that is just the 15V * 3A and not often listed on the spec of a battery. Most batteries will list watt hrs or even more likely milliwatt hours so they have a “big” number but that is just battery capacity, ie 90W/hr battery would be 2 hours of tonverk if it was always pulling 45W (likely pulls less most of the time).

Right, I mentioned at minimum because if someone buys a battery listed as USB C PD 60W or 100W, they can still get that and use it fine with the Tonverk. I should’ve specified the 45W specifically being the minimum. The wattage rating is however often included in the product titles and that’s important to note, ex.

Anker Nano Power Bank 10K 45W

Anker Laptop Power Bank (25K, 165W, Built-In and Retractable Cables)

The laptop power bank wattage rating is much higher than the 45W recommendation ,but that is just its max output. The tonverk manual says its typical consumption is 20W, but they still recommend to get 45W, likely for power consumption fluctuations and headroom

I already posted this in another thread. My Tonverk boots up in about 10 seconds with an empty SD card, anything past that and you are already loading samples. While getting the TV into a “play ready” state only takes less than 30 seconds with the factory card, IME it takes a lot longer for that circling animation to stop displaying (which I assume indicates some sort of cacheing or bg loading of elements)
