Tonverk: technical Q&A

In practice it’s needed for power although both ports can handle usb or power interchangeably. It’s possible to power via a host, but power requirements are high so in practice it may boot, but not power audio … the functionality has evolved, it basically powers off after boot if the juice isn’t sufficient, it used to stay on iirc

I vaguely recall reading it was possible to add data early on in testing. For most situations it’s best to assume it’s for power, but given you can have power pass through on USB hubs and so forth, there could perhaps be an evolution in functionality on these ports

Yes, I now tried through a powered hub, and that solved the problem.

Technically we’re all better off using Modwheel/breath macros for live performance - combined with a midi controller. To control the mix better. So for me lack of control all is just a miss for random fun vs actual live performance.

Can you confirm that you mean you were able to power the TV and use USB via one port of the TV by using a powered USB hub ?!

It would be handy to share the specs I guess … are you in fact using the TV PSU to power the hub and using passthrough ? I think I have a hub that may support this too !

I can confirm that i used a powered hub with an external powersupply for an iPad and had the tonverk on its own power via the second line, and i could succesfully use the ipad. i will try later (now not at home) if plugging the tonverk into the power port of the hub will also connect to the ipad. directly connecting does not work for me.

I noticed Tonverk comes with two USB-C ports, one for power and one for data/MIDI/audio. Since MIDI 2.0 (with UMP over USB) is becoming more relevant, I was wondering:

  • Is the data USB-C port hardware-capable of supporting MIDI 2.0 in the future?
  • If so, could this potentially be enabled through an OS update?
  • More broadly, is MIDI 2.0 support (higher resolution CC, per-note expression, property exchange, etc.) something Elektron is considering for Tonverk?

Ah, i misunderstood your ‘win’ then, it should be fairly safe to get an ipad running at the same time as powering the TV with its PSU … iirc cable connection timing may make things somewhat finnicky

It would be good to get confirmation that one port can double up in the field

I just succumb and ordered a Tonverk. Can anyone tell me how much free memory there is on the supplied 64Gb card as supplied (i.e. after the factory content). Thanks.

Thats not how I roll at all. I never know what I’m gonna do when performing, so MW/BC macros would only help to a degree. Its good to have options, everyone uses their gear a bit differently

Also, I dont recall saying anything about ctl-al…?

The supplied card has 55.9GB used free out of 62.2GB.

Thats a lot of content!

I’ve not had enough coffee, corrected that post. 55.9GB free, 5.8GB of content.

Great, thanks.

Most power banks and chargers are delivering power at 5V @ 3A (including the Anker Zolo and Nano). 15V is a lot for USB-C, and I would expect that to be delivered through a dedicated DC jack where a RipCord could be used. I’m dense, but wondering if 15V is really the required voltage?

Most power banks and chargers are delivering power at 5V @ 3A

Power banks support several output profiles, 5V @ 3A is just one of them, 15V @ 3A is another profile

Page 77 of the manual says the recommended power supply specs:

USB C PD, 15V, 3.0A, 45W

All 3 of those numbers are required basically at minimum, so a battery needs at least these specs or it won’t power on

Look up “power delivery”, it’s a USB-C protocol where the correct voltage to be delivered gets negotiated and the source (power bank in this case) adjusts its voltage accordingly. A PD powerbank can make a bunch of different voltages and 15V is one of the standard ones.

Is there a way to map track mutes (and other performance functions) to a MIDI CC or PC message so I could send via external controller?

Actually to shut down you can just press it, then a message comes up asking if you want to shut down, and press yes. I really like this system, no mistakes (plus you get a cool bonus shutdown animation  )

Has any one got TV working nicely with other equipment.
I have a midi keyboard connected to an Octatrack, Then midi out from Octatrack to a midi thru box. From the midi thru box I go to the TV and an EssenceFM 16 part multitimbral synth.

The Octatrack works as the Master clock as well as transport which works well, and I have selected midi channel one for the TV

I have this setup so I can use all 8 midi channels on the Octatrack with the EssenceFM.

The problem I have is as follows. TV seems to have the midi channel linked the Track on the Tonverk, so when I select Midi Channel 2 to play the EssenceFM, it also plays track 2 on the TV. This will be the same for all the TV tracks up to Track 16.

I was hoping there would be a setting on the TV that would only allow midi to be played from an external device on the selected track only.

Any Ideas?

Auto channel allows you to play the active track. But you would also need a setting to switch off MIDI input per track. I don’t believe it can be currently done on the Tonverk.
That also makes auto channel somewhat redundant, because whichever channel you choose for auto channel, the input will always be received on the selected track AND a track with a corresponding channel.

Unless the Tonverk is smart enough to route the auto channel input to active track only and filter it out for the whatever the other track is.
