Thingstone - Track8

Regarding the iOS app, does it not work without the hardware? I guess you need a project file from the device to load, correct?

So, I should not buy the app if I don’t yet have a Track8?

I’m so stoked for the hardware to come back in stock! (2027-ish)

I see this at the bottom of the app features list

I think that means you should be able to use it without owning the hardware, but calling it a companion app is certainly confusing.

Its basically a software version of Track8.
So you can definitively use it standalone.

It operates in the same way as Track8, so you don’t need a project from a Track8 Hardware device.

Yeah, the wording might be a bit confusing
Initially it was intended for a Track8 user that wanted to tweak their Projects on Tour.
But it grew into a full blown Track8 experience.

Oh, that is cool re the iOS app, I will have to check it out.

Yes, the wording is definitely confusing, both in the release notes you posted above and the app store text, if the app can be used standalone without ever needing the hardware.

But tricky how to actually pitch it, given its main purpose is still obviously as a hardware companion app.

Maybe I should reframe it and no longer call it an Companion App with the next update.

It’s basically Track8 on iPad / Mac.
And you can use class-compliant audio Interfaces with it (I use my Motu Ultralite mk5)

Any possibility the app could also be designed to run on a desktop Mac? Would be a great way to try the Track8 before deciding whether or not to commit to the hardware.

oh it does run on Macs.
But only Silicon aka M Macs.

Intel Macs are not supported. They would require significant rework, and I don’t have an Intel Mac anymore to test this on.

Thank you…so one doesn’t need to own a Track 8 to use fully use this?

It really does seem like there is a growing ‘non-DAW’ scene for recording. Or am I imagining it?

Yes, you don’t need the Track8 Hardware to run this.

What I would recommend is an iPad Compatible Audio interface. Else you’re stuck with recording the Microphone xD

I’m currently working on iPhone support.

I need to get my very lapsed guitar skills back in the game! Are there any plans to add AUv3 instrument apps as an audio source in the iPad version, or produce an AUv3 plugin version to use in the likes of AUM? I can see the possibilities for an iPad workflow which could record the many wonderful synth apps available on the platform into Track8 and/or send MIDI out to them. Tell me if I’m jumping waaaaay out of scope here!

Haha, nothing planned yet…
But these are great ideas!

Software development for the Hardware device has priority. And I don’t want to stride too far off what Track8 does. But I think especially AUv3 Instruments as inputs sounds feasible.

Ha, iPad users are always very much ‘just add these 800 features we’ve seen in various other apps, please!’

I know you said no latency guarantees, but I got a fair bit when recording into the Track8 using my TX-6 interface. It was too much to be able to record guitar.

Maybe my settings were wrong, I tried with the lowest possible buffer size and 48k sample rate (same as the TX-6). Anything else I should consider settingswise? I haven’t got this with any other apps using the TX-6. Has anybody else tried that combination? I’m on a IPad Pro M2.

What Buffer Size did you use? And did you change the Periods?

I set the buffer size to 64 - 4.0 ms because I figured that should be the least latency? Not sure where I set the periods, but if that’s the RTL I can’t change that without changing the buffer size.

My understanding from past forum discussions is that TX-6 latency is pretty “meh” on the iPad in general.
