Little clip of some layering experiments using Max.
Great stuff. Iāve been intrigued by Max for many years but never took the plunge.
Mostly interested in using it how I like using the Nord G2. That would be left field sequencers and drones/soundscapes.
Do I need Max if I have Live Suite and M4L?
Is there a definitive Max learning resource? Google/Youtube has left me lost.
Iāve only just started dipping a toe, but this has been good so far:
There are things missing from Max for Live, like the ability to save patches with gen~ objects, but it does provide most of the features in an easily integrated manner. Itās certainly good enough to learn with, and the discount on full licences if you already have M4L ends up making M4L and Max together cost about the same as just a Max standalone licence.
Totally depends on how you work. If you use Ableton a lot and see Max as a series of tools you can download/build and integrate into your Ableton projects, stick with M4L, itāll be all you need.
If you like the idea of building your own instruments, like to go really deep into some weird shit, work outside of Ableton and have a fair bit of spare time, give Max a go.
Max itself has most of the learning resources youāll need. Every single object had its own help page, which usually has an example patch to show it working.
As far as YouTube goes, look up Phillip Meyer, heās done a whole series of videos on sequencing and has some really interesting approaches using audio signals to generate highly accurate and flexible timing for sequencing.
Thereās a little thread on here with a few resources and such, some helpful stuff on there.
Reminds me, howās your exploration of Max going?
I know you also dig power noise, so Iām curious if youāve gone in any particular direction.
Iāve ended up going down a pretty big rabbit hole building chaotic systems, rungler circuits and neural networks.
Then they dropped Max 9 and Iāve spent the last six months figuring out all the new shit theyāve added and rebuilding all my patches around it.
My ultimate aim is to build a highly sensitive and playable synth designed around a couple of rungler circuits and neural controlled/chaotic modulation. I reckon Iām still about a year away from the finished article.
Neat, thanks for that!
I learned something new today.
Iāve been spending the last couple of days listening through Eliane Radigueās catalogue of work on Bandcamp, some familiar to me already, some new.
Itās astounding stuff, with incredible lightness of touch and delicacy, even when working with feedback. Very inspiring.
45 mins worth of chilled drone for falling asleep, writing code or whatnot.
3x Fors Tela, Nils K1v, Air Solina, Lunacy Audio Cube, Harmony Bloom
Or proofread town hall meeting minutes from 1891, a task as exciting as you can imagine.
Nice one!
Great stuff! Just purchased your album! Where are you based in Scotland may I ask?
Thatās awesome, thank you. I should figure out how publish some codes, as Iām not in it for the money ![]()
But your purchase has given me a little encouragement, so thank you.
I see youāre in Edinburgh, if you look across the Forth, you might see me waving back.
Great stuff! I was asking because I organise ambient / experimental nights in Edinburgh called Soundscapism and your sounds fit perfectly! Will you be up for some gigs?
Oh wow, I wouldnāt know where to begin with the live performance side of things, but maybe Iāll come over to see how itās done next time youāve got a show on. Whereās the best place to stay updated?
Bought! I really like the track.
follow facebook group where I post gig updates etc - Redirecting...
next show is on May 11 at the Bansheeās Labyrinth, Edinburgh, come along!
Thank you!
Iām not on Facebook and will be away on holiday in May unfortunately. Are there any other places you post updates to? Will try to get over later in the summer.
