I recently watched the film Infinity Pool (crazy) which has a soundtrack by Tim Hecker (awesome) and then I clicked on a meme on this site which lead me to watching a drone performance by @sezare56 and now I’m kind of obsessed.
I did a drone/ambient/noise soundtrack for a short film, which you can listen to here:
and here is a music video for one of the pieces:
The past few nights I busted out my JU-06a and connected it to my Generation Loss MKII and got some awesome Boards of Canada drone results. My next step is to get some digital FM drones out of my Model:Cycles.
I am GASing over the Stylophone DS-2 and the Dreadbox Typhon, but will maybe chill out and just work with what I have. (maybe)
By the skin of my teeth, I finally droned on drone day. On a synth I acquired today, no less: The PĒRKONS HD-01.
(No recording - I’m just happy to finally be in my office-studio on Drone Day and drone on something other than the Lyra which sort of feels like cheating)
I was hoping to have the drone album I’ve been working on for the last few months ready for release yesterday, but my health has been poor for a while so not had the energy to work on it enough.
Either way it’s progressing slowly, and I’ll share it when I’m done.
Here’s my new drone album I mentioned working on above, which has occupied my time for the last few months while I’ve been in poor health. For FM and radio.
Interesting stuff. I really got into more ambient first but heard things like this in probably Brian Eno’s music for airports and maybe Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works Volume II.
That was my first experience with anything like that, I was actually quite frustrated coming from his self titled Aphex Twin and Come To Daddy Ep. I had to leave the house after I had just finished walking back from the store and I put it in to listen to some of it while I still had a minute.
I comes in with that dreamy siren-ey sound…more dreamy sounds… no beat? Where is the Aphex Twin beats??? So I skip, wtf? Skip…??? Look at the CD case, selected ‘Ambient’ works Volume II… What does ambient mean?? I skipped through that whole first CD like greaaaat, I"m listening to one track on there that had a rhythm that was cool. The rest of the album I didn’t really listen to for a while. But I loved it once I did.
I had never read the word ‘ambient’ before, but I did get a Future Sound Of London Album that was definitely similar, I was surprised my heavy metal freind’s at the time actually really liked it.
That track is a lot more unvarying than a lot of my work made with other kit. I made it for a label that specialized in especially slow drone music, even for drone. And I want to see if I could do that with a drum machine too.
Interesting that you noted ambient music as they have similar aims (immersion in slowly changing sounds, less focus on obvious forms and musical elements like rhythm/melody), they often have very different aesthetics tho…ambient tends to be dreamy, consonant, ‘pleasant’ whereas drone ofyen leans more on bass frequencies, austere textures, non-harmonic layers and beating frequencies.
And totally get you about the Aphex Twin ambient works…I like them but initially found iy confusing. I guess I was too conditioned by marketing expectations. Now we get to preview releases a lot easier so those surprises, for better or worse, happen a lot less.
