Following @alechko’s suggestion in the miserable git thread, thought it’d be a good idea to open a thread for resources and general discussion for Max-related stuff as it seems there’s a few users/potential users on here, and its definitely something id be interested in following. I can recommend the following-
The ‘Electronic Music and Sound Design’ (vols 1-3) books are excellent resources for users of all abilities, and are very well structured with all modules neatly split between theory and practice chapters
‘Generating Sound and Organising Time’ is invaluable for learning Gen and does an excellent job of explaining what is (to me, as a non-programmer) a very deep topic.
Lysdexic has an excellent series on Max/Gen from a few years ago. Shame he hasnt followed up with any more recent ones as these are really good. Hope he does more- https://www.youtube.com/@lysdexic/videos
Cycling 74’s Office Hours series is well worth a follow, some really great insights from the various guests/speakers. Everything seems to be up on cycling74’s YouTube channel if you miss the discord events- https://www.youtube.com/@C74connect/videos
also would like to throw a good word for Max discord, a lot of helping people, nice community, often office hours. and of course the Learn section on the Cycling74 website
another great channel, various topics, great resource
I’m far from being an expert but what I do know I learnt from Ned Rush’s various entertaining videos on M4L. I like that he encourages breaking things open (and also breaking them ) and found it an accessible way into something that had scared me off for a long while: https://youtube.com/@nedrush
this channel does mostly M4L stuff, the one I really enjoyed is implementation of modeled tape saturation, I’m only linking the 3rd part which is the actual implementation in M4L/gen but there’s some theory in previous two parts that are also pretty interesting.
check out the channel for other interesting device building.
huge repo with all kinds of visual stuff
@Ess has some stuff worth checking out on the fors github too
I’ve seen this (free) course recommended multiple times in many places, haven’t singed up myself but worth linking it here for those interested, based on the description goes from very basic to very advanced
You get a shit load of Gen patches with the Generating Sound and Organising Time book. All sorts of stuff from simple FM and mixers right through to shift registers and chaotic attractors.
Can’t remember where the patches were hosted, think there was a download link in the book, but I don’t have it to hand right now.
The book is definitely worth buying though, as it’s so full of good ideas and is really inspiring for designing your own stuff.
Thanks! I do have that book, and indead a very good introduction and good read (did a few chapters). Mmm i should look through those examples a bit more
EDIT: Max/Msp is new for me, but now discovered the search in the filebrowser. Start with gen~ for the build in examples. And go. for those of the book ‘Generating Sounds and Organising Time’. A lot to discover here!!
NOt a resource as such but just answering my own question in a different thread a few weeks back… for anyone wanting to know how to set Max (9) so all windows are tabbed;
Preferences > Color and theme > deselect Colour Titlebar
Someone on the Max discord pointed that out to me, as otherwise would never have worked that one out
Thought i’d revive this thread since 9.1 has been released with some new features- anyone here making use of them yet? the stepclocker~, stepdiv~ and stepfun~ objects in particular are pretty exciting for me from a sequencing point of view, and the new abl stuff inc drumsampler and @ins attribute look like a lot of fun. philip meyer has done a good run through video on youtube thats worth a look- https://youtu.be/PUraz_YbloA?si=-3K_EeySviko-l8L
also great to see rian treanor do an office hours session the other week. some fascinatiing insights into his approaches. i think what he (and mark) do with max with a focus on community and education, all while making max as intuitive and approachable (and playful) as possible, is really commendable; https://www.youtube.com/live/mbCCYKF2IKo?si=D_lc3rVvMPsFkDTw
