Teenage Engineering TP-7 Tape recorder

It can almost do that now. Loop point’s the only thing missing from that scenario.

Well, you cant loop in edit mode. So if you want to switch to edit mode to overdub and loop it, you cant even do that. Device needs some love from TE before it’s fully realized. Still love it though.

I love the delicacy of this piece.

It feels like we’re peering into the creative process, and your decision making while composing. I love how fragile it all feels…the fragility is quite nostalgic at the same time…

You are sending me down the memory lane of a forgotten past in which I am finally able to awaken from the illusion of existence…

For multitracking, are you able to start the recording on cue when the TP-7 receives an audio signal or MIDI? Or would it be like having to hit the record button simultaneously with the play button of your sequencer? I remember using my old Fostex X15 and it was always slightly off laying down the tracks.

No cue, no syncing. This is one of the weak points of its multi-tracking. For now. Let’s see what firmware updates bring.

Why thank you, those are really nice words  I greatly appreciate it

So this is proving more interesting than I thought. Audio examples coming soon.

has anyone who ordered from TE directly gotten a ship notification?

And here it is -

So this time, I used the TP-7 as the main tool for composition as well. Not sure that’s a great way to go about it, but it’s certainly commitment to the process. If you think the OP-1 Field is tough on the lack of undos and stuff, the TP-7 is just brutal to use like this.

So I recorded a few sequences from the OP-1 Field into the 1010 blackbox first, and added some of those sweet granular effects, that lovely 1010 filtering and pitch algorithm, which just seems to apply a vintage tape effect all by its own. Essentially, some rough track design.

Once I had it all in the blackbox, the OP-1 being the primary sampled source, I experimented some with the song structure in the blackbox, triggering loops and clips to get some idea of what I wanted the track to be like.

Finally, I did some field recordings with the TP-7 as well, and then I put it all on the six stereo tracks on the TP-7, recording from the blackbox and nature itself.

The improvisations and experimentation from the blackbox guided me through the recording onto the TP-7, which became the real composition process. I layered each track, one by one. Listened by ear to get some idea where I’d put the next one, recorded that one where I figured it should start, and kept doing this for all tracks minus the nature stuff through the microphone, which I just had running from start to finish. The only way I could change anything, was to re-record one take entirely. Which I did a few times.

After that, all six TP-7 tracks went through the TX-6. Some eq, the TX-6 reverb on two channels, panning and slight filtering, but no compression. The result was recorded onto the OP-1 Vintage Reel, some minor Mother reverb added to the master, no Drive or Release.

Nope, still waiting.

I like this a lot!!

It all fit together really well. It has a vaguely vintage feel without cashing in in a tacky way using a lo-fi aesthetic.

Nice work!

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face: actually, a lot of that comes from you 1010 guys. The blackbox has this subtle character to its filters and pitch algorithms that can make it sound like a well-serviced tape recorder from the 70’s.

Uh, how is the Blackbox sending/receiving audio with no power cable or usb power even??

It runs on batteries :slightly_smiling_face: mine does, that is. Not the blackbox in general.

That’s a slick setup!

And a painstaking process! Knowing the TP-7 I’ve found it quite gratifying to work in that capacity. When you’re done with the session it feels like you’ve been to the gym (mentally)

Yep, very true :slightly_smiling_face: I won’t be doing this again. Ideally, one would want the technical capacity of the TP-7 with the OP-1’s interface.

If they started talking to each other more thoroughly, then this workflow will be the one to beat for the rest of them out there.

But I think I should also say, if TE didn’t add a single update to the TP-7 from this point on, I’d still keep it. It’s proven extremely useful already, though it seems narrowed to fit my purpose exactly. I can’t say this would be true for most people out there, so I can’t objectively just say “This is great for a lot of people” given the current price.

But it wouldn’t take much in terms of updates, to suggest it would add a lot to a lot of people. It feels like a platform, and now they’re building on it.

Good results but it sounds to be an utterly unpractical, inflexible and complicated process

Not entirely, but yes, there’s a level of awkward here for sure.
