Teenage Engineering TP-7 Tape recorder

Funny my Sunday plan was to replicate your process!

I get a kick out of such tinkering, the process, tangibility and gadget-ness is half the fun.

Agreed that reasonably anticipated firmware updates can serve to take big leaps in use cases for the TP, so hopefully TE make good on their stated path to develop the field suite further. TP does seem to not be taking advantage of many features and workflows that should be easy to add.

Totally. Go for it. I mean, even though the process itself was a bit painful, it’s a great way to learn the TP-7. You push the current multitrack functionality to its limit, not in the least its somewhat quirky way of how to arm a track for recording when in edit mode, and make sure you’re mixing, not replacing, everything else you already got recorded. And the routing relationship between the TX-6 and the TP-7.

Once you got it all figured out, it’s a very smooth and efficient process for mixing and working the track. It’s just the composition part I made unnecessarily tricky for me this time around. Then again, at one point in time, all we had was tape reels where we rewinded back and forth, appropriate places on where to insert the next slice of the recording. So it’s not like great music hasn’t been made like this before.

It’s a little bit like that scene in Bohemian Rhapsody, when they actually record that song. Record. Nope. Rewind. Record again. “How many Galileios do you want?” Well, enough to make that song into what it eventually became

I don’t even know what happened here. But there was an OP-Z involved, the line module, with one section sent through a Chase Bliss Mood, everything recorded on multiple tracks onto the TP-7 and then mixed through the TX-6.

I’m not sure which I like most—the tracks, or all these great photos.

Well I like you a lot for just saying that :slightly_smiling_face::heart:

I don’t want to derail the thread but have you written anywhere about the process to make the Blackbox run off a battery? Would enjoy hearing more about it.

Love it!

got mine today… lovely thing
question prob for @circuitghost @MichaalHell about routing
when connected to the TX-6 is there any way to change routing of tracks…
e.g. my OP-1 is connected to trk01 on the TX-6, i record to the TP-7 and it goes to trk01
then say i want to record another line from OP-1 but on TP-7 trk02 (for mixing later)… is this possible? can’t seem to find a way to do it without plugging the op into a different input on the TX6

any insights appreciated!!!

Not that I know. I’m doing it your way. And wish there was a better one.

Sadly not, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way and plug an input into trk02

TE has 5 days left on their 45day word…

Question for you:
Are the side buttons on your unit a little “rattle-y” for lack of a better word? The other buttons feel rock solid.
