Teenage Engineering OP-XY

and then he accidentally uses punch in FX at the end and is surprised how cool it sounds.

if you have used an OP-Z you know the step components, punch in FX and master track are where it’s at.

haven’t seen it in any demos yet, but it’s cool you can send and return audio through external fx, something I wish the op-1f could do

tbh I’ve loved the op-z ever since I got it 5 years ago — I still love it. Build quality is obviously less than ideal in the long run, but the guts of the device, workflow, and stunning feature set (that for ages has totally outgunned so many others in its class) in such an inarguably portable format is hard to beat.

Being able to take everything I love about the OP-Z (other than its tiny size, of course) and have it in a way more premium package in terms of hardware and specs is great for my purposes. The OP-Z has always been more optimal for live performance than OP-1/1F’s more producing/writing/capturing workflow (at least in my case), so for me having the 1F and now XY together means the OP-1F will actually get a lot more use in a live/performance context, and that alone makes me excited.

How are the FX? Is the reverb as nice as the mother on the op1f?

tfw you make this post then pull out your OP-Z and get lost playing with it for an hour. a very fun device, seriously. undoubtedly jealous of people who can can afford XY. it honestly looks like a great instrument, just the price is completely insane for most “full time musicians” these days. especially the kinds who would have an interest in batshit electronic grooveboxes oriented toward experimentation.

though to be honest, I’m obviously just jealous and seething. just let me seethe in peace please.

don’t forget the live audio input track (3rd to last) and sequencing the tape FX.

After watching a demo, I found myself thinking, "I could sell my OP-Z. Sell the OP-1F. Sell the OP-133. Sell the TX-6. Sell the in-box unused M8 M:02. That could get me close to €2,299.

A few things I notice.

  • I still prefer the spinning wheels on the OP-Z, think they could’ve implemented that here.

  • The multicolor lights on the OP-Z were so fun, they couldn’t even mimic the rainbow flow startup?

  • The screen is BW, like so ugly, come on.

@MichaalHell, loved your projects video on YouTube, the best jams so far.
For an breakdown of what a lot of the OP-XY does, i’d recommend to folk to watch the OoraMusic video.

I really wasn’t in the market for new music gear, but I’m really really tempted. The price is the only thing holding me back making an impulse buy.

I’m honestly pretty surprised to see the departure from fun visuals. The FX screens are just a bar graph of parameter settings :open_mouth:
Maybe it’s strategic since there is so much going on with this device that it could get confusing to get too wild with visuals, but the bar graphs are kinda…

Edit: I know some visuals are there, but it just doesn’t feel quite the same, to me, from what I currently see.

So… indeed an OP-Z premium, with many of the things people have demanded over the years, and then some. Slightly dissappointed they didn’t include linear audio tracks but hey - it’s more opz that op1. The worst for me is as I anticipated the sheer blackness of it all - I am not eager to get my hands on it, if that makes sense. But it looks very capable.

The price I think is a consequence of the op1 (and many of their other products) being overpriced to start with. That pricing policy is a bit of a trap. I’m all for rewarding investment in innovation, design, etc. but utility for us customers goes down with increasing price, except for conspicuous consumption. Actually I think much of the love for the opz was that it was pretty incredible for the price, to the point that we could live with its other faults.

I now have to understand better how the arranger and song mode work, sampling time, etc., because, contrary to other impulse buys, you have to be pretty sure about this one before you pull the trigger.

The thing I love the most about the op-xy is you don’t have to buy it.
