I’m guessing if I want to record some guitar-heavy songs, the op-1 field is still the better choice?

Unless you want to sample and then sequence sounds from your guitar, the audio tape track workflow of the OP-1 will probably be better.

Yeah that’s what I figured. I just ordered an op1f like 3 days ago and now this thing dropped and I’m doubting myself 
kind of disappointed it doesn’t have any timestretch…such an elemental tool for a sampler/sequencer

Thanks I was wondering about this as well.
Since so many eyes are on this thread, I want to ask question:
I really love the punch in effects of the OP Z.
Are there other devices / software tools that can do something similar? 
(No other teenage engineering products)
Was just wondering if there is a device / software that takes this „performative / generative altering of audio input” as its core.

The performance page on the Polyend Tracker is awesome, I’d say it’s even better than Punch in FX.

polyend play+ is probably the most similar thing I can think of to the XY atm. it’s crossed my mind a bit the past couple of days.
it can’t sample, but it has a pretty decent generative sequencer, synths & punch in fx.

Totally worth it for me. I can’t afford it, but it’s worth it. If you gave me $2300 to spend on gear, it would be the obvious pick with zero hesitation.

given TE only offer 1 year warranty but shops like thomann give around 3 years are you way better off going with a shop vs direct?
probably an obvious answer but maybe someone with experice can chime in what it’s like going direct with TE after warranty period ends.

To me, this is worth the price they are asking. I’ve never had a teenage engineering product that I didn’t form a deep connection with. For whatever reason, their stuff just gets me making good music. The way they design these things is so enticing to me, I get a huge amount of satisfaction from using them. I’m genuinely happy when I’m with my OP-1
Honestly, if someone said I could only have either a half price m8 or an OP XY at 150% the cost, I’d still buy the OP.
Looking back at how much I used my original OP-1 and what it did for me, I think I’d have to say that the price becomes pretty meaningless.
These are lifetime objects in my opinion.

Popping in to say that I think step components are superior to sequencer features like Euclidean Sequencing.

Do tou have the original op-1 or the Field? Can you share your experience with the built quality and if you had to fix it, if anything broke and how long have you had it? Im genuinely interested in your experience and not trying to (re)start a discussion about teenage engineering being synth tugs that want to take all our money while selling budget quality instruments :). I want to have some kind of expectations regarding longevity of a op-xy

This is where the M8 shines though. I do use the OP-1 Field out and about in parks, the seaside, etc. The OP-XY would be the same for me portable usage wise. It’s portable, but you need a surface to rest it on. The M8 is much more portable in that regard.
I do wish they didn’t do away with the lanyard hole that the OG OP-1 had. I had a small wrist strap in it to help prevent any falls to the floor if I was moving about. With the OP-1 Field and now the OP-XY I always feel a bit iffy moving about with them, just because of the cost.

Bought the field on release, haven’t had a single problem yet.
I’ve owned the original for years and years. I might not be a great example, because I don’t baby my instruments. Cosmetic damage doesn’t really bother me much.
I lost a key at one point and dealt with that for a while, but a couple years ago decided to purchase a new OG-1 to ensure a solid 8 years ahead.
I still use the OG extensively because I feel the sonic character has carved out an interesting area in musical history.
I hav all the TE stuff and it is as important to me as the rest of my pretty high end studio.
Creativity is born from limitation.

OP-XY may not be perfect … but from the (admittedly promotional) YTs so far it does seem to be to the top right hand side of the portability v features chart for the user who wants nearly all they could possibly need ‘on the go’ to transfer ideas in their mind into a sequencer/synth/sampler.
I’ve bought a multitude of devices for portable set-ups (I generally only have time to indulge in my peter pan music hobby when I am on the move to various cities) and every time I’m packing my bag it is a last minute thing to pick some devices, stuff a bag with usb cables, adapters and power supplies and then hit the road. When I get there I’m always missing something but plug everything that’ll work together on a table.
And to be frank it is more than a silly hobby, it is an effort at mindfulness that works.
For 2k, a lot of money to be sure, the sheer fun of exploration of this, and then the hope of it becoming a regular toy over several years is a decent investment. All we have is time folks, and what you do with it is up to you.
