Just found out that the Phaser effects takes you to SOPHIE metallic clang’s territory.
I got lost in a project incorporating these sounds and sat up till 3 am last night

It is, because you can create so much variety with each clip, so you can have the synth tracks mainly focus on timbre variety and let brain and punch in FX make up the compositional aspect and then you can mix and match clips via 99 scenes and make 9 songs out of those 99 scenes per project.
On that topic, are the effects on the FX1 and FX2 tracks also changeable? E.g. having the phaser on clip 1 in FX1 and change to a reverb in the next clip?
Yes
I’m beaming, this is going to be a lot of fun to mess around with. Thank you!
And zero complaints about the table so far.
They now have two flagships, this and the OP-1f.
I think the Korg synths with user oscillators or effects are a good answer for that.
Another option would be the Circuit/Seqtrak way: give the user a deep engine with a few macros, and full editing on the computer/phone.
As Buddha said, don’t kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part of you that cringes.
But seriously, it could be pink for all I know. I’m past caring about what people around may think of me, as long as I’m not crossing the line like using a speaker in a cafe or whatever.
Last year, a coworker asked me why do I use a “girly”, as she called it, case on my phone, bright and colorful. I’m a grown ass man, I don’t have to prove shit to anyone.
I find myself most productive with the OP-Z, and I imagine this one would take it even further. That’s all that matters.
That said, I can’t afford it, and I’m not buying it anytime soon.
They didn’t. The bottom two rows are your regular run of the mill chromatic keyboard, starting with F.
So, the only thing I find curious about the device is the same as what I found a bit claustrophobic about the original, is the kind of internal island nature of it.
It’s mainly questions about how the thing outputs, which presumably only seems to be via the two 3.5mm jacks (if you set one of them to output audio).
but it doesn’t seem like there’s any internal routing, there’s no internal bounce like there is on the OP-1.
We’re adults, I don’t give a flying fuck about what someone else deems “embarrassing”
We have No Masters here ![]()
Edit: also there is probably something Freudian involved with the toy adoration ![]()
@MichaalHell one thing that I don’t quite understand yet is the outputs/inputs.
Are all 4 of them “flexible” and can be used for audio/cv/etc? can they switch between in&output?
No there is only one flexible jack.
It would have been cool if all the jack were flexible, but they didn’t make it so for reasons I am not privy to
Okay, but that one flexible output allows to send to external fx and then return into the input…like the OP-Z line module, correct?
Good call out. Hopefully stems from fleshed out projects can be dragged offline into the computer for more processing. Manually muting 7 tracks for tracking stems is a pain.
Yes that correct
Thanks for clarifying…that’s nice. put a ZOIA on there and off you go
To be fair I feel embarrassed pulling out a €100 synth in public, but that’s more about the general idea of pulling stuff out in public which has really nothing to do about the cost of things
It’s ironic that you are trying to discount my take with a handwave like that. You’re assuming that my assumptions don’t matter, pretty loopy and also untrue. Your argument is a truism since absolute knowledge can’t be had until after some time has passes, like I said. Pay attention.
I’m making a judgement call on market sentiment based on what I see available on the market so assumptions are involved but they are relevant and there is no need to discount them. I take it that you are not making the argument that the price is appropriate when compared to other devices so what are you trying to say?
I didn’t mention their margins but I’d be interested to know what they are. I’m talking about product market fit and making financially sound decisions as a company. Would you not question it if you held their stock? I’m not sure if they are private but the point remains.
Ooh definetly! The ZOIA is always amazing put probably even more so together with XY
yeah, that’s kind of scary. as a small manufacturer (which most of our fav manufacturers are) it’s a lot more pleasant to produce small numbers of things with a high markup than it is to produce large numbder with low markup, because when you produce a lot you need to do a lot of customer service afterwards which is overwhelming for small companies. and you can see that with TE who have a hard time dealing with things when there are QC issues like what happened on OPZ.
the reason people are so upset by the XY is that if this becomes a model that others emulate, it signals growing wealth inequality that most of us are on the wrong end of
it means that there are now enough people out there who have a high enough income to afford to buy very expensive items that most people will never be able to afford and the manufacturers will start abandoning the rest of the market in order to chase that subset of people. dentist incomes and up only please, or it’s behringer for you!
that’s not going to happen overnight, but over several years that would make sense given inequality trends.
up until now most products are things that most semi professional musicians and fanatic hobby musicians can afford if they sell some things, save for a few months etc.
this one is like ‘oh shit, i already sacrificed a lot to buy a used OP-1f thinking i’d never have to do that again for 10 years, and here’s this now happening every couple of years’ and people had extra cash during COVID and now have been drained by inflation etc.
and then mods are like ‘don’t complain, we don’t want negativity, please just disappear gracefully so we don’t have to feel bad about being in that upper echelon’!
there are some manufacturers like those who make those interesting NINA synths with the knobs that dance around, who are already organized around that higher end audience of professional musicians and dentist level income hobbyists, but it doesn’t bother people as much because we never touched those instruments before and don’t expect to be able to buy them, but TE was making affordable instruments until relatively recently so people do expect to be able to afford them and it’s a big letdown when you can’t.
the upside of inequality is that you end up with lots of experimentation and new innovation because manufactuers have more room to try new things and the market has room for more manufactuers - so we have a TON of cool things that we can play with that are affordable, but the downside is that eventually you end up with classes of people who will never get to touch a lot of the coolest stuff.
someone mentioned squier guitars earlier - with guitars the thing is that there isn’t a huge difference between a $4000 strat and a nice $600 imitation. it’s still a guitar and does the same thing. for synths and grooveboxes, if you have OP1 but you can’t get OP1f you’re missing enormous conveniences or improvements.
at the same time, the level of stuff has been so excellent in recent years - like for example digitone II is incredible, but you can still do so much with digitone i, and it’s so fun despite the limitations and you can produce such great stuff with it …
we’ve all been kind of spoiled to an extent in this past decade of an explosion of incredible music gear. like the XY is making me excited to master my OPZ …
all this said, i wonder if the XY is a high markup, or if it’s just really expensive to produce and done out of passion at great risk!
We’re probably already all characters in Nathan Barley whether we like it or know it or not. At least the OP-XY actually does something, even at elevated cost.
I’m not sure how Teenage Engineering aping D.A.F. for the OP-XY launch fits into that precisely (and I feel it does), but I hope the band got well compensated for it - oh wait, in the Nathan Barley world, everyone gets paid in exposure credits…
Sorry if you felt like I was waving you off. It was more a general statement about it being overpriced. Maybe you have extra knowledge in the area, I don’t know.
I think in TE in general is known for their not so economically accute decisions. They take risks which from a financial standpoint are insane. Like sourcing all of the internals themselves instead of ordering off the shelf stuff, no company with a manufacturing volume this low would ever make that decision.
If the CEO was an economics person instead of a design person, the company would have been very different. Love it or hate it.
