Syntakt Science Lab #7 SY Toy

Welcome to Syntakt Science Lab #7 !

We’re making a smooth transition from the “Can Syntakt mimic Nord Drum” Science Lab Special, where SY Toy played an important role in many of the posted clips. SY Toy is Syntakt’s only physical modelling machine, and as such it offers a unique palette and controls within the Syntakt universe. I look forward to listening to what sonic gold you’ll find in the nooks and crannies of this unique machine.

A description of the parameters from the manual:

  • Project file
  • Some words on your inspiration, techniques used, and other aspects explaining how you ended up where you did.

Listen to other people’s contributions, comment, enjoy…

Woohoo, SY TOY ftw!

I’ll kick this off with a lazy entry because it’s the same from the Nord thread :stuck_out_tongue:
6x SY TOY. It’s a percussion goldmine.

Thanks! I was going to ask if you could post it in this thread, as it certainly belongs here

Edit: and maybe @mishpult could post their SY Toy recording here as well. Not sure if there were other SY Toy only recordings in that thread…

Thanks, here it is:

3 tracks of toy with macros controlled by DT2

Toy is a very subtle one, I’ve noticed, the FORM parameter goes from metallic to woody and back to more resonant in its range, where almost each small change is meaningful. IMP and PART play together and give different flavor in different pitches. Also the filters are important with this one, to being diff timbres. @Oxenholme djembe pattern above blows my mind, still need to research his project file.

One 16 step pattern with 8 tracks of SY Toy. (didn’t use the fx-track for this one)

Cool! Nice groove, and wide variety of sounds from the Toy.

Remembered why I don’t use SY TOY much when coming to this Lab - a lot of the time I actively dislike the sound…

As discussed, shows I need to try harder.

This is quite twee, four tracks of TOY, then copies of those four tracks not routed to main audio.
Relatively restrained use of FX Block, though too much Drive possibly.

Using Ctrl-All for trig probability.

Not much sound variety but I do quite like the TOY sound for once:

Hoping this will motivate me to achieve something more timbrally interesting.

Toy Techno workout

8 tracks

T1 kick
T2 bass
T3 perc
T4 hats
T5 and 7 are the slow attack stabs
T6 is a surprise bell towards the end
T8 is noise crackle

There is notch filter on the FX track with slow lfo on cutoff and the verb is going through it.

I use the delay to 100 feedback and low cutting it for the build up, and some gentle use of ctrl all.

Listen to the end if you have patience;)

I really like this machine. It’s also great for airy sounds too (which might be hidden in this one).

Please don’t forget to share project files / sysexes.
It is for future generations! :grinning:

Nice work all of you! I listened quickly through the clips posted so far and my first thought was; how do you manage to get such mature/refined sounds? So far I’m struggling to get something interesting going. I probably need a bit more time with it.

Looking forward to listening more closely to each clip in my cans

EDIT Listened more closely now.
@Oxenholme I’m amazed by your mastery of this machine and the fantastic sounds you squeeze out of it.
@verdurin sweet melodies and an almost harp-like sound at times. Lovely dynamics.
@mishpult Great vibe as always, and those phasey ominous timbres are superb.
@elxsound Lovely mysterious vibe.

How do you get the reverb to sound like that? Sounds killer, btw

Thanks! By automating the reverb decay on the FX track  It’s only long on a couple of steps which gives it this bit of a gated effect.

Really inspiring stuff! I dont think I’ve ever used SY TOY for anything, this SSL shows it has a lot of sweet spots
