Superbooth 2024 (May 16 - 18)

Yes very smelly of him! He wore it everyday and also djing at the Bigwig party! But he is forgiven for giving us the Octatrack.

Highlight for me was listening to Nils Frahm talk about His Zahl AM1 mixer he’s one passionate dude!
Also the "Tauron Labs Tonarium " was incredible! Even though still nobody really knows what it does…

Cracked up at that too! Every thing going on there is wrong!

That whole process is unironically impressive.

My takeaway from this years event is anybody can have a go at building idea or concepts these days. There so much information available for free that if you want to build a synth or whatever that looks like a bunch of bananas theres nothing to stop you. In fact there’s probably more hobbyist engineers than buyers. Its a fun pasttime for sure.

That was quite notably missing ! I definitely was expecting a big dramatic reveal, going into the show, along with the launch of the Labyrinth.

But apparently it actually was there, just shown privately. Amazona pretty much says so in this article, with a section titled The new Moog Muse only behind closed doors.

Recall too how Arturia did the same thing with the PolyBrute 12 and the Astrolab back in January at NAMM. Both only shown quietly at private showings. They held the Astrolab to unveil at Synthfest France, and the PB at SB. This definitely costs a lot of money to do.

There is obviously then a pay-off for these private showings, though i’m not understanding all the reasons.

Likely the Labyrinth was there at SB as well, but only for special viewings.

Funny sidelight in the Amazona article, was the red AKAI MPC – in the Moog booth !!. Akai didn’t get a ticket to the show, so inMusic sent Moog with an MPC ! Maybe Akai was given a time-out for being bad ?

SB and a number of other shows have rolled out the red carpet to start ups. It’s smart business growing the producers helps grow the show. I think smaller producers can get through the door inexpensively, if they’ll take a small table in the hall some where.

I liked the Wiggler in the small startup category this year. They were there last year too, smaller and more fly by night then though.

Yes, I enjoyed playing that one and chatting to the friendly Twisted Electrons man.
Seems Cuckoo had a whale of a time.

Yeah apparently they made this with Martijn Zwartjes, who made Reaktor’s Steampipe, via his 112db company.

I learned that last year in the Superbooth 2023 thread.

Thanks for that jiffybox.

So ESI acquire the XKey from CME and have added the VA synth part. It’s also usable as a controller, and is thinny thin. We’ll see if they hit their fall deadline.

I read that the guy in the video is ex-Waldorf.

It’s up to you all about the XKey keyboard format but it does have poly-aftertouch.

MEMO from Acid Rain Technology

What if you wanted the capabilities of a larger modular synth, in a portable package, with instant recall of various patch settings and quick modifications and no patch cables ?

That is what the target is with this early prototype. Plus it’s got complete MIDI integration. Notice the LED rings on all the control knobs.

Less impressed with the sound demo at the end, but it’s early, and this was done in the rough at SB. Will check back with this in a few months.

All microrack modules works with eurorack power (±12 and +5 V) and eurorack-compatible signal levels: working signal range is from -5 to +5 volt, but ±12 volt is acceptable, every input has protective resistor.

Oh cool. It also acts as an audio / midi interface which makes this thing a perfect midi keyboard for ios devices.

i got pretty hyped about this- went to the kickstarter and saw its already live. saw there were some early bird rewards left, looked at the price… €200, ah that’s not too bad, went ahead and pledged. then spent time to actually read over the whole kickstarter… um, the €200 is the small one not shown in the video below. the one that has isolated outputs is: €700!!! so yeah, canceled my pledge. i was super hyped about quiet power for my live rig. but €700, i just can’t do it for that price. guess i’m still gonna lug around all my power bricks and power strips and follow my voodoo that i’ve learned to wire up a quiet live rig…
