Really nice! Reminds me of the old Burial stuff! As @schoolbabyboy said, very organic sounding.
A couple of questions for the group.

Anyone using the P-6 with Logic? If so, are you able to use P-6 as both input and output device without getting a feedback loop and recording your metronome? I couldn’t figure out any settings for this. Right now, for recording I’m using P-6 as input and my audio interface as the output, which works fine, but if I want to sample from the DAW I have to switch the output to P-6 and move my headphones over. Not the end of the world, but an extra step.

I recently got the new MicroKorg 2 and it has a really nice looper on it. The loops on the MK2 are super clean, so it must be using some kind of crossfade. I experimented with sampling a couple of different 1 bar and 2 bar loops, and there is just the slightest pop/click when it loops on the P-6. I didn’t use midi to synch the clocks, just used BPM, so I’m wondering if maybe I’d have better luck that way, but no time for more experimenting tonight. Any thoughts? I didn’t have much luck dialing the click out completely by adjusting the end in the “Size” setting or by adjusting attack/release. It would be awesome to be able to get this to work as it would be super quick to make loops for the P6 on the MK2. Plus, the MK2 doesn’t have audio recording over USB, so the P6 makes for a really nice compact audio interface for it.
ill occasionally get some clicks/pops on loops too. i actually had a little bout of madness last night because i didnt realize the sample i was using had a vinyl pop in it and i couldnt figure out where the pop was coming from. occasionally i will have luck with adjusting the end time to 254 but that hasnt been 100% successful.
do you think it would be possible for some genius programmer to create an application that can access all 8 banks at once over usb from a pc? or is that some kind of limitation of the hardware or the os?
i enjoy using it as an impermanent audio tool but in order for me to do that, with one project at a time, i need to be able to back everything up every time i decide to wipe the old stuff. and that is the most arduous process right now. takes at least 15 minutes, if i dont lose focus while waiting for the next bank to show up in my file explorer
This video applies to the P-6 as well. In Logic, you use an IO device from your Utility effect section.
- I use Ableton but on Mac I have to create an Aggregate Device so I can use multiple audio device at once.
- Speakers/DAW main output: 1+2.
- Send track P-6 output: 3+4.
- Return track P-6 input: 1+2 (or whatever).
- Def my biggest quibble, besides the gated notes in the sequencer, is how hard it is to get rid of pops and clicks. The P-6 seems to lack any internal crossfading to mitigate this. And the envelope always to the trick as SBB mentioned. Maybe the fine editing in the Voice settings will help? But def noticed with sub bass notes that I can’t always tame the pops and clicks.
Thanks everybody, I’ll digest this all and try some more troubleshooting. I do have a bit of experience with aggregate devices, but haven’t made one in a while.
In the SP-404mkii we have a setting, as noted at around 1:40 in this video, where you set USB to mix out to avoid feedback. That’s not on the P-6 so I was assuming that’s why it was routing the audio coming into the P-6 (for example the metronome in Logic) back out the output to create the feedback loop. Seems other people aren’t having this issue though, so that’s good.
I’ll also fiddle more with the loops. Where it’s at now isn’t a showstopper, but I do want to see how good I can get it. I have a few ideas to try. I’m loving the loops I’m getting on the MicroKorg though, so this could be huge for me in terms of workflow.
I’ll keep you posted and thanks again everyone!
when i was getting feedback between the op-1f and the p-6, i set the USB input in the p-6 to one of the two volume busses and just lowered the volume there. i think the metronome doesnt go over USB, ive found i can only hear it from the main output.
I was wondering about this. When I first heard about this I was wondering if maybe they are using multiple memory chips rather than a single one (like having several hard drives you need to back up). Even if that’s the case, it seems like they should be able to make some kind of script for the app that does it all in one click (says the person that knows nothing about making scripts).
Thanks, I was thinking of exploring the audio bus as opposed to effects bus.
Also, I should have been more clear, it’s recording Logic’s metronome, so routing all audio in from Logic through the USB back out, causing a feedback loop.
ahhh i see. now we’re outside of my realm of experience, im kinda surprised DAWs dont have some feedback protection built in by now, its such a wild beast.
Ah, ok, now I’m seeing what’s going on, I think. Gotta try some stuff when I get time.
Know any EU sellers?
I’m really enjoying the P-6 almost entirely as a little chaotic grindy machine. A couple of tiny things that are bugging me that I suspect roland will never bother their arse to fix because why would they?
I couldn’t see any mention way to make the knobs um, catch, I think is the usual term where you need to go through the current setting with the knob to enact any changes. At the moment the knobs seem to jump to their position as soon as you turn them which is a pain when there are so many multi functions to them.
The granular engine seems to always play a bit of the sample on trigger regardless of where the start position or the window/size is set to which feels really weird to someone that’s spent years doing grains with Clouds/Beads/Arbhar/301.
I’ve got quite a strong dislike of the way the memory is organised and might just make it so that it’s completely empty every time I turn it on if possible, it’s also kinda jarring when patterns contain tempo and FX settings but use the same set of samples.
I’m finding the sample software thing pretty useless, I was hoping it would be 2 way so you can tell what is on which pad but there’s no way of doing that as far as I can see and it only shows things you’ve loaded in during that session?
Other than that lots of position noisy fun and so happy that it feeds the analogue input to the usb audio because that is a thing that has caused me much confusion trying to get working on SH4D and S-1 before discovering that you can’t.
Hoping that I’ve just misunderstood some of the above stuff and happy to hear any solutions but it’s Roland so ehhhhh…
You can “see” what the current value of a parameter is by holding Pattern and turning the knob. Not quite what you requested but it’s a handy little trick.
Currently, the only way to do that is to factory reset it every time your start it. All it does it wipe all the settings and delete all the samples but it takes a little while.
Me too. I think it only makes sense if you do a lot of editing to your samples before you load them. I haven’t used it one time.
Thank you for feedback, i am about to buy 1 but i have a quedtoon
Can you do experomental drones and soundscapes with it? I have only heard lofi hip pop and similar loops so far
these were mostly done on the p-6 with long alternating loops
You can do whatever you want with it. It’s a sampler so it will play back whatever you put into it. The effects and the granular synth are also fun and something you might like.
