Oxi One Hardware Sequencer

This also makes the most sense to me.

For me: I like being able to chop long notes in shorter ones.
But it’s not a fixed decision and the consensus seems to be like you guys describe so I’ll change it when I’m back to this.

I like the way it is now as it is quick to subdivide a long note into a phrase of short notes, without loss of efficiency to shorten a single note. But I can see that the current action is not necessarily intuitive.

I booted up the grid mode the other day, but I actually don’t know what it is good for. Only works with certain other hardware/software?

Yes, it supports a specific software platform.

Thanks! I’ll read up on that.

Yeah, from the “computer” section it suggests multiple uses not restricted to one device.

Does anyone know if the OXI has a performance mode like the OP-1 ‘finger’ sequencer where you can combine different synced sequences on the fly?

It doesn’t

Black Oxi One won’t power up over USB with a Non USB C cable. This is really infuriating when most products dont use non USB C anymore. Is the Oxi broken or is this a poor decision not to ship with USB C to USB C?

Most of the leading edge of development for Monome is currently centered around either Norns—their desktop sound computing device—or their Eurorack modules such as Ansible.

(Historically, a lot of Monome activity revolved around Max/MSP and various standalone apps or app-like patches built in it. Unfortunately, a lot of those have ceased to be updated for new versions of Max because as noted above, the community’s focus shifted. Many of the most popular apps have been ported over to Norns. Because it’s a serialosc device, you can still use it to write your own apps in Max, Pd, Supercollider, Processing, and many other coding environments)

The most accessible way to check out for yourself what a Grid can do would be either:
a) Load up some of the Monome modules in VCV Rack.
or
b) Get your hands on a Norns Shield (or one of the clones such as Norns Fates or Norns ShieldXL), which is an accessibly-priced DIY version of Norns

But there’s also still activity in pretty much every platform mentioned on their website. It just may take a bit more technical expertise or learning curve to explore it. But that’s the beauty of Monome: it’s not a device with a fixed identity. It becomes whatever you, and the community around it, make of it. And the community is this awesome mix of academics, artists, musicians, programmers, and weird experimentalists of all sorts. They turn the simple grid into a thousand different things, from experimental sequencers to live sampling instruments to FM drum machines to concatenative synthesizers.

People who like the Oxi One’s approach to sequencing where instead of having one rigidly-defined sequencing paradigm you get a whole menu of different ones to choose from, those are people who will probably also like Monome stuff. It’s that same idea of separating the device from some rigid definition of what it is.

Ha ha nice!

TBH seems simple in my head - scale it up to make it more grab-able and less fiddly. Buttons like the TR-8S, ableton push, 909… or come to think of it even the Perkons has super solid, confidently playable feel. Would love that, but appreciate I may be a lone voice.

Can you describe what’s wrong in a bit more detail?

It comes with a USB-A to USB-C which is a very common cable and there should be no issues using it to charge it and/or to use it as a data and charge cable.

USB-C to USB-C would have been nice to include but can’t see it being a big deal.

Power is just cutting off after about 1 minute. I wasn’t sure if it was a USB issue or a bad product. Perfect Circuit thinks its a bad product and will be sending me a new one.

Thanks for the very interesting read. I am really a consumer electronics guy, not really into tinkering with diy-stuff or coding. I like my gear ready to go with a proper UI, so I think I’ll go down the VCV-route to try this out.

Totally understandable. Even if you’re not into DIYing things yourself, there are a lot of used Norns Shields available on the market. And there are a lot of norns scripts (i.e. apps) available from the Norns community.

So that can also be an avenue to “ready to go with a proper UI”.

But the VCV route is free, and the Eurorack modules they’ve done give a pretty good introduction to the overall vibe of Monome stuff. If you like those, then further exploration may be warranted.

That’s a bummer. I’ve heard the developer is really responsive, so I’d like to make a request for this feature. I posted something in the OXI Discord but didn’t get a response. Is there any better way to reach out?

it doesn’t and I probably won’t jump into that kind of feature
