I wrote this is the other thread and maybe it isn’t news to some but I thought it was really neat:
One fun thing I discovered today that creates things I’d never come up with manually is setting the punch-in FX track to just the drum track(s), activating an arp on random, and then playing/recording the punch-in FXwith the arp creating wild variation, rolls, syncopation, spread FX, etc. It’s unique in a way that the Octatrack scenes are while being musical and generative and recordable, not just arbitrary locks for performance crossfades.
i’m not super crazy about sequencing the drum tracks, but i recently loaded up a blank drum track with vocal hits which really makes the punch in fx do some cool tricks when combined with tape
i’ve decided that 7 synth tracks and 1 vox track, with an elektron companion for perc, makes a lot more viable a combination. having those vox essentially on their own mix buss in the master channel helps too
Agree on this. Considering they have several sample engines on the device, it would mean that sampling plays a big part in its arsenal, and it seems foolish not to include modern rudimentary sampling tools like chopping and time-stretching for their engines.
Rudimentary chopping is already possible on the OP-XY. Just record a sample, load it to multiple keys and define the start and end points for each key. A bit cumbersome, but more capable than the DTII regarding fine adjustments of slices on a single track, for example. But yeah, lazy chopping like on the KOII would be a great addition to the OP-XY.
Tried to sample in my 1st drum hits using an empty drum sampler engine. Threshold is set to lowest value, xy connected to my iPad via usbc. Works fine on most hits, but unfortunately I noticed, that no matter how long I press the record button, that - samples that are more calm - like a closed hihat hit - get cutoff at the end. I checked the recorded audio files and it seems they only get recorded until the volume is above the threshold level - no matter how long I press the record button. Anybody noticed something similar? Other than that, it’s a joy to sample with it and create kits. I just want to manually control how long a sample gets recorded.
For anyone looking to attach a wrist strap, etc. to the XY (or Field) take a look. I loved the way the OG-1 had a hole for a strap.
I had a load of book pen holder things (got 10x in a single purchase before). I cut the elastic pen holder part off and trimmed the plastic square a little to fit. I then put a small hole in it and threaded the wrist strap through. Then took the backing from the square and stuck it to the body.
I wouldn’t be swinging the XY about from my wrist, but I did drop mine already and the added wrist strap helps ensure this doesn’t happen again.
It’s thin enough too that it doesn’t impact the rubber feet providing grip on surfaces either.
While (very badly) capturing punch in effects on this jam, I realised that mashing the pitch and loop punch-ins can affect the notes of the step sequencer for a few bars after you’ve pressed them.
I’m torn between loving and hating this. It’s great getting new musical ideas out of it, but not that useful if you can’t recall how you got there (and there’s so little documentation on it!)
Very clever design. Would be cool too if they zipped apart if you just want to bring a single device. That shop have some other cool case designs too. Thanks for sharing the link, I might have to pick something up.
That’s a bummer. I must have hard-recorded a punch-in efx in previous tries. Was hoping to make it more programmable by using the Aux track to program an efx per pattern
One function I am missing that was available on the OP-Z is being able to shift all steps on a track left/right. This was done using TRACK & +/-
I haven’t found any mention of it in the XY manual…anyone know if this function exists?
