No New Gear 2026 - NGNY26

I am planning to downsize gear and not buy anything other than a few Jasper stands to tidy up and better organize my studio. The only two synths I want are the unreleased Polivoks 8 and the P10.

Are they chocolate coins ?

I intend to sell most of my gear but I’ve wanted to do that for the last 10 yrs . Maybe 2026 I’ll actually do it .

I’m tempted by Tonverk as it seems usable now but should also dig into ableton / bitwig / many plugins .

Those Syntakt science labs have helped me turn on my Syntakt this year .

i manage to fail every year with this but am willing to give it go even tho i suspect i will fail again…have to keep asking myself why do i really wnt/need this new/old thing rather than digging deeper into what i have - happy ngny26 everyone and may the force be with you always

I guess you make the rules for yourself, but it definitely sounds like you’re buying something new for yourself and I personally would consider that a fail in NGNY. For example: I bought the IIs in 2024 to replace DT and DN, and I bought TV in 2025 to replace DT. I never buy new, always used or B-stock. I definitely consider that a new purchase, even though I technically don’t have more gear. Selling something to replace it with something else that can do its job better is the main driver of GAS for me now that I already have one of each type of machine, so NGNY would definitely mean I‘m not allowed to do that.

There is however something to be said about selling several items to replace them with something more powerful, I think this thread is the right place for that:

Writing a blog post about all the stuff bought and (sometimes immediately) sold this year made me realize all the time spent preoccupied with gear while not actually using any of it.
Down to a nice little setup now, so count me in :v: #NGNY26

Count me in for 2026.
I did this a few years ago and it was the start of a much healthier relationship with gear for me. I managed 10 months that time.
In the past couple of years I have sold most of what I didn’t understand or use, and managed to resolve my debt problems.
This year I’ve been meditating and exercising a lot, minimizing other possessions and generally trying to lead a more intentional life in all areas. All this has fallen by the wayside in November/December and there have been more purchases, so I’m keen to knock that on the head.
Looking forward to the journey with you all…

I did 2025 and was actually pretty happy. I’m not planning on doing 2026, but I want to keep an eye out and help others, and some of the things we share/discussed in 2025 were great conversations so I want to be around for that again. I won’t discuss any specific gear or my purchases here unless they do end up turning into non-purchases.

Are there exceptions to this? Say for instance someone hypothetically speaking offers you an EMU SP1200 for $50. Would you break your abstinence?

I am in and going hardcore by doing a “buy nothing” year: no music instruments, no movies, no clothes, no books, no games etc. The only exception I give myself is to replace any broken things e.g. guitar cables etc.

This is going to be extremely difficult, but I am determined to make a change for better.

wishing you good luck

Should this thread be in science lab ? The 2025 version isn’t …

@LyingDalai ?

Pruning all the gear “review” from my feed now!

I wonder if Science Lab is the right place. Maybe Mission Briefs ?
But I think a category that doesn’t focus on gear is appropriate and helps muting gear-related categories

^ I agree. I participated in NGNY 2023 and the most distracting thing was when some users started discussing their setups, what to sell, etc. I can see why it’s related to the topic, but there are threads for that kind of discussion already. Better to keep the NGNY thread clean and focus on strategies to succeed with NGNY.

NGNY is a great initiative, and I wish you all the best in achieving your goals. My participation in 2023 was just what I needed to help me focus and change my behaviour of surfing-buying-selling-surfing-buying-selling. Temptations do appear still, but with a set of strict rules for myself I manage to keep focus (one in-one out, max 2 purchases pr year).

I guess what helps me the most is that after three years on this path it’s easy to see all the benefits compared to my old patterns. Less time spent browsing, obsessing, packing and unpacking, rearranging, trying to figure things out, worrying about things getting broken… More time for music making, and digging deeper into and enjoying what I already own.

I think you’d be out, but there’s always next year.

I’m signing up for 2026!! I’ve got a few things towards the end of this year and really want to focus on learning those. My achilles heel is if Elektron release a new box but I don’t think we’ll see one next year. For each album/EP/lump of music I work on I like to limit myself to only a few things… sitting down to plan out the next few projects and quickly realised I’ve got a big pile I need to spend more time with so this is definitely the way forward for me.

Even though it’s not 2026, I’m in for the duration. After being greatly dissapoint with the Sequential/Novation Fourm, and how promoted and marketed it has been on social media like some Shamwow video- I think I’m done. I also loved how the marketing company said it has ‘Slim Keys’ and not ‘Mini keys’…lol! Either way if your hands are bigger than a 2 year old, it’s going to be rough playing them.

Here’s to focusing on music and not gear in 2026!

I bought quite a lot of gear in this year and now I’m at a point where I have a synth a groovebox and a decent midi keyboard so that I have everything I need to make music entirely with hardware plus the acoustic instruments I already have
The only thing I would like to buy is an MPEcontroller like Roli or board or exquis also I am very interested in these biofeedback generators like the PoxketScion but I am trying to hold that off and wait at least a month and see if I still need those things
