No New Gear 2024 #NGNY24

I did NGNY 23 and prob this year too, what’s on the bench is it. I may look for loopholes on my guitar setup but I’ll give it serious thought.

I’m in.

I’m already pre-ordered for a Caladan, and I might switch to a new sequencer when I get it. Other than that and a few cheap iOS AUv3s I’m not picking up anything else.

Edit: Also maybe a new iPad. I already pre-ordered most of the apple credits for that.

Yessss back to original title!

Except it’s not “No Gear”, because people are still using gear. It’s “No New Gear”, which is why I suggested “No New Gear Year” in late 2022, and whoever started the 2023 thread listened. It gets kind of silly to have “New Year” in the name of the thread past January or so.

Its pretty obvious, at least to me, that a bunch of gearheads are gonna keep their gear and they are simply striving to not get any more gear this year. “No new gear” could mean one could get used gear, if we are getting semantic:).

In for 2024. Found myself chopping and changing gear a bit too much the past few years. This year I’m going to focus.

I do have the Torso S-4 on pre-order… but that will be the only new gear.

Will sell a bunch of stuff too.

While I agree with your logic, I also feel that the initials NGNY are pretty ingrained in the forum now and would be used as shorthand regardless of the thread title. NGNY is also the sound I make when trying to resist a purchase.

I’m in this year. Last year I picked up a Digitone and an STVC and probably a pedal or two, which is a big year for me.

I’ve also definitely been feeling that I’ve reached saturation point with the gear I have and still haven’t fully explored all the features that led me to purchase them in the first place.

So my motivations are twofold, exploring what I have, and financial, as we will be moving and have a larger mortgage (and most likely even less time for music making).

There’s only one item that I intend to let myself off the hook for, and that’s a new audio interface after the move happens (so I only have to rewire once). At least probably - I’m waiting for more user reviews of the Arturia 16rig to pop up.

But I think what really put me over the line to be officially ‘in’ this year was seeing a good sale price on an MPC Live 2 and feeling GAS rear its head. I don’t need more sequencers (and it would require selling other gear I like to justify it).

But the thought quickly went to ‘well if the MPC costs X, I could instead revive the old idea of making my Maschine Studio more standalone by taping a Mac Mini and an interface to the bottom of it for similar cost…’

So yeah, belaying those thoughts for the year. If there’s something not working with my setup then I will come back to it.

I was happy with No New Gear New Year but looks like a mod or someone changed it for me!!
Anyway been interesting to see people’s setups & plans. Quite envious of ppl who can just have a sampler/looper/DAW and an actual instrument like a piano or geetar… but well, had time to learn in my 20s & 30s & I squandered it in techno clubs so guess I’ll just keep on step sequencing & knob twiddling till the end!

Technically I’d take your suggestion a step further and just say

“No New Gear 2024”

Stating Year and 2024 seems redundant to me

Thank you Secret Mod for making the thread title “right”. I can now go to sleep without stressing out

You got your “No new gear 2024” back :kissing_smiling_eyes:
Indeed “year” seems redundant with 2024.
And I also like NGNY tag for some unknown reason, so I left it.

happy tweaking guys

in keeping with my resolution, I’m now exiling myself to the machinedrum thread only!

I’ll try it again. Last year i managed to stay strong until april.
Just got an Octatrack again, so that will keep me distracted from new gear for a while. Hopefully OT mk3 won’t be released this year…

thats how I did it eventually made it last year no new gear purchases. This year, I need to complete the other new fence and landscaping as well as save for a new roof and kitchen remodel and new car. That easily kills my gear budget for at least several more years.

I should have tried that!

I screamed in the mirror till I was too tired to hit buy!!

im gonna do this this year. buying and selling gear has been fun but ultimately a money hole that is better directed elsewhere. would love to pay off a considerable amount of life debt this year and go on some fun trips rather than paying off gear debt.

Then I think we should all unfollow the influencers and get off YouTube and instagram.

I’m in. Failed 2022, sat out 2023. My mostly newish set up for 2024 is deep enough that I’ll still be learning the ropes on these on December 31st. If I can’t do it with these, I can’t do it:

Syntakt e25
Iridium Core
Push 3 SA
Juno X
SH-4d
TE TX-6
TE KO II
Steven Slate VSX

I’m impervious, hit me with your best shot gear manufacturers…
