No New Gear 2024 #NGNY24

I am in as well. Also not buying new SW, plugins, and presets.

Current HW gear:

  • Elektron Model:Cycles
  • Arturia Microfreak
  • Novation Circuit Rhythm
  • Korg Volca FM
  • Korg Volca Beats
  • Kawai ES-120
  • Arturia Keystep
  • Novation Launchkey 25 Mk3
  • Zoom MS-70 CDR
  • Shure MV7X
  • Behringer Xenyx 802s

Think I am more than covered for making music this year. Time to get busy.

I’m in for third year no new synths.

my take on it is simple - if it’s not a new shiny thing but a utility to make music and you can’t progress without it - it should not be counted as a new gear, if you don’t have headphones and you can’t use speakers then there’s no way to make music without headphones, it’s a utility. same goes for broken stuff like cables, power adapters, etc.
new gear is “ohh if I’d have this compressor/synth/pedal/mixer/daw/plugin/ipad/lava lamp I’ll be making better music and I’ll get rich and famous”.

the point of this is to make what you have in your arsenal work by going deeper with the gear and not around it with new shiny things.

but if there’s a need for utility then it’s not a new gear, you need headphones to hear your stuff, you need cables for everything to work, etc.

good luck everyone in 2024, I’m not committing officially because there are some things I wanted whole year but didn’t get, like a midi merger to get my EC4 work with AR and DN simultaneously.

btw, it’s easier then you’d think. what you already have is enough to make tunes, go make them and stop worrying :upside_down_face:

Exactly this.
So far today I’ve returned 2 items I shouldn’t have bought last week, and put £2K worth of kit on reverb for sale. There’s more to come.
Next thing is to upgrade Rytm to 1.70 - it’s staying put

Can’t join in again, still waiting for the Anyma Omega to arrive and the Torso s-4 looks promising … otherwise I think I have all I need

Current gear I do use, in no particular order: Syntakt, Opsix, Hydrasynth Desktop, Octatrack MK2, Argon8M, Nord Drum 3p, Analog Four MK2, Dreadbox Typhon, Analog Heat +FX, Digitone, Digitakt, Machinedrum MK2.

Everything else is collecting dust and is about to be sold. And that list above should become smaller, too … me and my purse are really mad at me!

I failed NGNY23 and won’t be participating in NGNY24, because I know I’ll probably get MM2 and quite likely also SP404. Syntakt is also on the watchlist, but that depends on what the upcoming updates will bring.

I have decided not to grow my main/live setup though and will try to reduce it to 3 units (currently 4).

midi merger is definitely a utility and not new gear. going by your logic (and mine, fwiw).

it is a utility by definition but definitely not necessary, at the moment I have the EC4 connected to digitone for macros (mapped to aftertouch/modwheel/breathcontroller), something that can’t really be done with digitone internally, but on rytm I can avoid using EC4 because I can use performance pads/qperf knob, so I don’t really need it and I can live without it.
it’s not like the machines don’t work or sound different without it…

but there are other things I can do with EC4 and rytm that makes me want it, so I reserve the option to get it this year and not feel guilty

Do guitars/guitar amps count?

eh, I think it’s still not “new gear” if it’s just helping you utilize current gear to its fullest. especially if it’s something this cheap.

I also just think nothing says “utility” more than a midi processing box!

I’m in! (Excluding smaller studio furniture, random m4l devices, possibly a few used eurorack utilities and possibly some random cables).

I have this treasure:
2 x 104hp 7u case
M-32
DFAM
Subharmonicon
OT mk2
OTO Boum
Push 3 (S)
Live 12 Studio (preordered, doesn’t count )
Max 8
A suite of random m4l devices
UA Apollo Duo mkII with a few sweet plugins
Keystep
Beatstep Pro
MF Twister
Intel 2020 Mac
Decent monitors

I make tons of drafts but I don’t make tracks. Im absolutely held back creatively by having too much stuff and too many ideas but too little time and determination.

I wanna say I see your NGNY24 and I raise with a NGNY24+25. Is there a hotline I can contact when things heat up?

Thx!

Not participating this year, as I felt that I learnt my lesson in last year’s NGNY. I’m happy for all of you who commit, I hope you achieve what you want

Were you successful in the first two? Any reflections on the experience so far?

I will post my setup for posterity so I can review at the end of the year.

Definitely Keeping

OT mk2

Syntakt

Push 3© / MP Midi Controller / SSL UF1 / KK S49 mk2 /
Midi Fighter Twister / Launchpad X / Launch Control Xl (Ableton setup)

OP-1 Field/TX-6/OP-Z

Jupiter XM

SSL Six/Microcosm/AH+ FX/audio interface

RD-88 Piano

DDJ FLX4

Easel Command

Maybe Selling

Polyend Play (I need to revisit it as a sequencer)

Digitakt

Empress Euroboro

Eurorack (I’m not motivated to use it or sell it tbh)

Maschine+ (patiently waiting for an update)

Denon DJ CDJ and Pro DJ Mixer (it’s too big for my studio - hopefully my bandmate can use it)

Definitely Selling

Roland SH-4D (redundant with the Jupiter XM)

AH mk2

Behringer ADA8200 preamp unit

Korg SQ-64

This collection is the result of GAS, boredom at work and my desire to always find the optimal solution to a problem that I keep creating for myself.

I’m going to be strong this year and stick to the plan of only selling gear :muscle:

Hey, first time poster I’m in! Followed the NYNG23 thread and I def want to do this this year
Was too distracted last year buying and selling stuff (including the digitakt) but have slimmed down to

New MacBook M2 with Ableton 11 (gamechanger!)
Synth = Repro with Soundforce Controller/Keystep
Drummachine = Playbeat with LaunchControl
Push 2 and Launchpad
One guitar/one bass with various pedals

Im relatively new to making electronic music so it does take a while to figure out what works for you but first thing this year I have a hard disk full of sketches that I want to turn into a set of tracks

nice! sounds a lot like my setup too! I am good with my gear and no need for anything this year or next few ones. I do want to visit some larger synth shops this year like Perfect Circuit and Noisebug in socal to try out new gear for fun before I buy anything else.

  • Ableton Live with a Push 2, one electric and one acoustic guitars.
  • OP-1, EP-133 and model:samples if I want to feel the thrill of the hardware once in a while.

I also got the Korg thing on the Nintendo Switch that I can’t wait to make dank memes with.
I even decided against buying the Hologram Chroma Console despite feeling strong lust for it, because Ableton Live can probably do most - if not all - of what it can do.

I think I’m ready this year :sunglasses:

Count me in again this year! I passed last year No New Gear challenge with flying colors.
Another few years of no gear savings will benefit my life.

I’ve seen how gear can ruin peoples lives. So good luck on this.

too much gear causes one to lose focus and not be productive. I learned this lesson the hard way. Now with just 1-3 pieces of gear and software synths I can do what is required to be more productive and save money. I am not a live performance DJ or artist so less hardware benefits me as I never play out live.
