No New Gear 2024 #NGNY24

I did resist some temptations last year:

  1. did not buy Osmose - while i had it pre orderd 2019/2020 - i am not a keys player - not sure if i still want to complete the pre order. Its a fascinating instrument, but the disjointed interface where you have to program your sounds, then play it - i dont know if i would enjoy that.

  2. i didnt buy the polyend tracker - while it was on sale - the order got mal deliverd and returned. Afterwards i was quiete ok with it - while i would probably like the tracker worfkflow, there might be cheaper alternatives to try it out.

  3. didnt bought the pioneer XDJ-700 , i had preorderd it, but the paypay reservation expired, i went to holiday and had to pass the new reservation.

Where i didnt resist:
I bought a 2nd A4 - i use it all the time, and having a 2nd device opens up more leeway to use it for more sounds at the same time.
I upgraded some VST plugins, shaperbox3 was top, stepic worth the price. Bought the elevate bundle from eventide, which i wanted to have for a long time. Bought elysia alpha VST, which also sounds top.
Bought a elysia xpressor HW on the last day of 2023. Abelton 12 upgrade is already preorderd. I finished 2 tracks last year, (overall 5 - but 3 i still need to work on.)

For 2024; I might or might not try out an Oxi sequencer. But i want actually nothing what distracts me from finishing tracks - helpers /tools which advance my process is for sure welcome.
Besides that i cant think of anything, if there would be an Octatrack 3 i for sure couldnt resist that.

Current Setup: Abelton Live, Octatrack, Rytm, A4 (2x) , Prophet 12 Module, Sub 37, Digitakt, Syntakt, Digitone, H9, OTO BIM, A&H qupac.

Not sure if i cut the Sub37 - its so large - i use it only occacionally - i tend to focus on one device at a time, record - process it. Then take another one, layer it with VST. I have seen guys to recreate its sound with serum, with its original wavetables.

Overall this thread was really helpful - while i didnt make it last year - it helped me to resist several temptations, and get a clearer thought about if its a hole in the soul that gets filled with consumerism, or if its actually helping to get stuff done.

This is quite similar to my core setup, and I also have 2x A4’s (plus an Analog Keys) and use all of them all the time. I have a habit of having 2 of things I lean on a lot (mainly because I have a home studio and a separate studio and like the duplication/consistency).

I could never get rid of my Sub37… it’s my bass machine, I use it a lot for leads, but mainly it’s about it’s tactile nature… I don’t think there are many better laid out synths.

With you on this, only for me it’s the Hapax… I need to resist it… I think if I can better utilise the Arturia Keystep Pro I have, and the Push 3, I can get past the Hapax urge.

I have a bandroom and home studio, that is also a factor - i create sounds /patterns /tracks at home, and then make a live mashup of it in the bandroom. For actual live usage i only go for Octatrack + A4 - i just use the others to create sample fodder for the Octatrack.

Happy NY all!!

Over the last 2 years i got a Digitakt (2021),Digitone(2022) & a Dreadbox Typhon last november.

Not getting anything new, and determined to prepare a techno/electro set with what i have.

Jumped on the Ableton deal, Got intro 1 1 with the upgrade to 1 2 just for recording purpose eventually.

Allready had Reason 12 but Overbridge doesnt work too well on it.

Only going to use Reason to manipulate samples with Soundtoys plugins and sample into Digitakt.

Have a productive 2024 all, i hope i get to post some good sounds here by myself this year!

Well, now it sounds like a title for some youtube show
NGNY24 is perfect as it is, it’s a catchy abbreviation for [buying] no gear [in] new year, '24 [edition]. And it rhymes

Still no song mode, though

buy a home that is sure to make it a no brainer to avoid new gear purchases! I love my home but it is definitely more money than renting for higher expenses of maintenance, taxes and utilities!

I completed NGNY23 but I’m not planning to participate this year as there are a couple of guitar pedals I want… also interested to see what Elektron are working on, assuming they release something new…

i dont know if home ownership is a potential reality for me, at least not here in Seattle!

yeah homes are way too expensive today. I bought few years back when rates and prices were much lower. I would not be able to even buy the same home I have now in 2024. I am glad to have bought 3 years ago at low rates and much lower prices. I did spend some cash on floors, windows and new fence.

I’m in. The only thing that would make me fail is Elektron releasing a flagship-format FM synth.

I’m not committing to anything but there’s a good chance I’m not buying anything in 2024 and the only new gear is probably going to be the Anyma Omega whenever it ships.

I’m in. Spent a bunch of time and money reshuffling my studio and workflow last year and really got sucked into the buying and selling aspect of it to the point where it feels like a borderline addiction to shopping. Really hoping to take a break from synthtube as well as obsessively checking Craigslist/ebay/reverb.

Current setup that’s working well is:
Mpc one
Syntakt
RD-8
Nava 909 clone

With the following in the closet for when I get the itch for a change:
Mpc 1000
Emu e-5000
JV-1080
MS-20mini
OB-6
Xoxbox
Bro-1

I’m still on board.
[this coming March will be three years of no new gear for me]

Biggest event of 2023 for me, sold Monomachine :pensive:

I use the hapax for my synths and synth modules. I really like having different tracks, being able to do a bunch of different MIDI channels. It also works with MPE which is nice, but does NOT work with polyaftertouch.

Which brings me to the Osmose. I wasn’t on the waiting list, but someone listed one on reverb at below new price, so I decided to try it. I am not some great, or even good, keyboard player but it is amazing. The only annoying thing is having to patch directly to a synth if i want to use polyaftertouch (see above). It also causes me now to wiggle my finger on regular keyboards, because that is how you pitchbend on the osmose.

I didn’t expect to get to NGNY, but here I am. No interest in more, wish I’d stopped consuming a little sooner.

The core setup isn’t totally nailed down until I see what sells… but definitely want to continue for now with:

  • MPC Live
  • Digitakt
  • Korg X50 rompler
  • Matriarch and Minitaur
  • Prophet 6 and OBX8 desktops
  • Waldorf M
  • Pedals
  • System 16 recorder/mixer

Some other stuff may get kept too, TBD…

So, who’s managing the betting pool?

I wager that everyone caves by mid April…

Cheers!

I take that wager.

I will pass again this year. New fence due in February will take my gear budget spending.
