Minilogue XD

Different multi-Osc have different features. Check out Shoebridge’s videos for his designs, goes into great detail. I have Two and Three, both very useful.

Thanks, DD.

ONE looks like you could fake a second filter by morphing a triangle wave into a saw.

Keep in mind that the multi-osc can have a lot of extra parameters, but they require some tedious menu diving to get to. I think for most the appeal of the Minilogue is how knob-per-function it is, and using just the front panel only gives you access to two of its parameters (using shape and shift + shape). I think the Minilogue shines when the multi-oscs are used to add some quick digital spice to an analog sound.

Nah, a couple button pushes is nothing. Have you ever used a Hydrasynth or a Micromonsta?

Frankly, I had overlooked the XD until I played one last week and thought the VCOs sounded great. Now I’m just thinking about ways to work around the limitations.

By the way, has anyone seen this user oscillator? I’ve been messing with the free version and the integration is pretty fantastic. He more-or-less hacked the front panel to run his VA engine.

That is pretty awesome! The main issue with all of the user oscillators is the menu diving, but that isn’t the case with this one!

This BTW I found funny to read:

fusion uses a newly developed high-quality audio engine, using 2x oversampling and anti-aliased virtual analogue oscillators, which include:

  • emulation of the Minilogue XD’s VCOs

So now you can run a digital emulated VCO on your XD of… your XD :slightly_smiling_face:

Ha, yeah! Although when you crossfade them, you get some interesting effects.

The cool thing is when you start subbing in VA oscillators from other synths:

  • emulation of the Alpha Juno PWM Saw waveform (“hoover” sound)
  • emulation of the JP8000 super-saw and super-square oscillators
  • emulation of the JP-4 sawtooth and sawtooth + sub oscillator
  • pulse and pulse + sub waveforms
  • phase modulation waveform generators

I don’t know that I liked the Korg sound better than the Sequentials, but it had an absolutely beautiful sound, and it was its own sound. I had the Prologue 16 and the XDm. Both were great! I’d still have them if I had space for such things.

Love my XD. Here’s a wee tutorial on making a Dub Techno stab. Really love the FX on it. Bought the NTS-1 just for the fx

Been exploring the multi-engine user oscillators lately. Is it just me or are a number of these strikingly similar to what ASM did with the Hydrasynth?

Look at Blinds by Edouard Digital, for instance. Man, that sure looks like the various PWM modes on the Hydrasynth.

It’s possible ASM borrowed some ideas for the Hydrasynth from Edouard Digital, as Blinds predate’s the Hydrasynth, but it is also possible that different sound designers came to similar ideas.

No, I agree. Parallel evolution and all that.

As a Hydrasynth owner and someone plugged into that social network, I hear people constantly laud the Hydrasynth for its wave-shapping abilities. Frankly, it deserves those accolades. But I was (pleasantly) surprised to find Blinds and realize that the Logue synths have been capable of much the same for awhile.

fusion is so clever it almost makes me want to get an XD

Yeah, and it’s great that Korg made it open source. Seeing what people have been able to do with it is inspiring.

Frankly, I don’t understand why Korg hasn’t contributed. Are you telling me that no one at the company has realized how much they could make selling oscillators/effects? Kind of baffling.

I’ve sold my OG Minilogue and ordered an XD which should arrive later this week. I’m trying to understand something about the FX. I’ve looked at the user manual and watched a bunch of videos, but I’m not understanding the order of the FX. Is the order predefined or is it determined by the order in which the FX are enabled?

Predefined. I believe it goes MOD > DELAY > REVERB.

Thanks!

New owner of an XD and discovered the PSU’s cable isn’t long enough for my uses.

Would anybody know the barrel size of the tip please, so I can seek out an extension cable or another PSU to replace it?

Maybe not the answer you’re seeking, but I’d just use an extension cord between the factory PSU and the wall outlet or other power strip. That seems much easier than finding a compatible PSU with a longer cable and little downside.
