Positives: I like the MF keyboard better than on my little Novation Launchkey Mini mk3. The Microfreak transmits MIDI from the arp and the sequencer… and the sequencer has full polyphony, despite the MF being only 4-note paraphonic, so I can record and transmit ten-note chords if I want to. (No metronome on the MF for live recording, just weird. But there is step recording.)
Negatives: MF is MIDI type B, MM is type A. So cable count goes up by two. Also I cannot get the MM to recognize aftertouch. I have verified using MIDI Monitor on my Mac that the MF is sending MIDI aftertouch, but the MM is recognizing it as velocity, for some reason. Has anyone gotten aftertouch to work on MM, and if so, what did you do, please?
Also, while I am asking questions: any tips on the “Alien Liquid” sound (or something resembling it) in this RecButton video of MM2 demos? I can’t get enough clues from the visuals. Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50m6u8sswy0&t=2126s
This only works between two devices with the same midi type (a or b).
You could cut a cheap 1/8trs and swap the tip and ring wiring. I’ve made a few and they’re very handy to have around. Basically a custom trs midi conversion cable. The link below is for making a trs to din…. but with the diagrams it’s pretty easy to see what’s going on.
Thanks. The two adapters plus MIDI cable is longer and bulkier but works without surgery for now. I have enough cheap 3.5mm cables so will contemplate this, but my electrical skills are close to zero. One time out of three I can twist a wire around a screw and tighten it and get a proper connection.
Hahah, not yet…. I had an early version of the 2.0fw so by the time it went public I had made around 120 patches on it… no good naming conventions, no organization. There are some gems in there, but also a lot of learning the mm2 and some patches that are very similar to the one right before it lol. Evolution!
There’s nothing very wild. Lots of subtle pitch modulation for that old tape feel.
Idk…give em a whirl and let me know how trash I am. Or how much you love a certain patch. It will all help.
Lol there’s no water patch if that’s what you’re after… but give me a few minutes and I can try to cook that one up. I have some ideas
Thanks, that one is not essential, I just like the sound. Not even sure what I would do with it. I bought the MM2 for (besides just noodling with it on its own) infill for the Digitakt and Analog Four, so it’s more long, lush, evolving sounds that I need from patches.
You should be at least not horribly disappointed with my patches then.
Toss me some feedback if you end up downloading them.
I’ll holler if I mail a good water patch.
Anyone is able to get synced delays slower then 1/4th? Would be awesome if there was at least 1/2t, 1/4. and 1/2, but I am unable to get them slower without loosing temp sync.
Lowering the full song/set and everything sequenced to half the tempo and recalculating everything else because of one delay that just misses some settings would be sad
Retrokits also do a tiny din adapter that sits in your DIN socket and provides both A and B TRS. I can see myself getting those and avoiding those fat DIN connectors and their stiff cables altogether.
So I don’t know how the first semitone divides up into cents, but after that its increment of 2 for one semitone, (11-33) then increment of 1 for 1 semitone (33 up)
0-11 Seems purpose made for fine control of FM near the integer ratios.
