M8 Tracker

Found a little thing tonight I don’t think I’ve seen in the manual:

On the song view, make a selection, then hold down Edit. You should see a little “x” appear on the left.

While holding edit, press up or down. You’ll shift your selected chains up or down the song grid, even pushing other chains up or down as necessary. Feels more intuitive than cut and paste and cut and paste and…

Just got my M8 today and I’d be willing to pay you for the bundle of “sync 97” as a project to learn from right now. Venmo, PayPal, whatever lol it’s stuck in my head.

Here is the first track I wrote with the M8 .
It’s really a wonderful machine and very powerful and a delight to take it with you everyday for making music in any rest, at the bus or waiting at the dentist. I totally recommend it. It’s a very capable synthesizer, sampler and sequencer, so you can make complete tracks easily.
A lot of FM sounds and semi-generative tricks were used. The M8 is perfect for these pseudo-random melodies and the FM built-in synthesizer sounds wonderful with those noisy grainy sounds.

nice work :slightly_smiling_face:

how do you approach pseudo-random melodies on the m8 if you don’t mind me asking?
haven’t got one yet (waiting for the next batch) so trynna learn it’s intricacies in the meantime.

Thanks @pidgeo
Mainly I used 2 tricks:
1.-In any phrase you can use CHA (chance) and PIT (pitch) in the same row of any note, so you have a probabilitiy that the original note could be triggered (to the left of the CHA command) and also another different probability (to the right) that the pitch of the note will change.
2.-You can use a table, where you write the notes of the scale that can be triggered,. Use the RAN command in all the steps, but the first one where you have to write the HOP00 command. This way everytime the note is triggered a different note of the scale will be choosen. I’ll see if I can show you a photo later of this table.

Hope this helps

that last method would also work pretty well for moving through random slices of a sample as well

man, that’s awesome thanks Pepe.
Yea id love to see a screenshot later if you have the time.

I’m still getting used to using tracker commands fluidly, n the idea of tables is a fairly new concept to me but that makes perfect sense. I appreciate it a lot :slightly_smiling_face::pager:

How do we feel about using the M8 as a sequencer? Is there any limit to the sequence length? Can you opt to record non-quantized?

Thanks.

mickey303 showed me this trick in a Discord chat. He is a great M8 user. This is the screenshot to do trick number 2:

I like the sequencer a lot. I am no expert, but simply learning a few tricks you can do a lot of thing very easily. It’s very powerful. You should try another trackers to see if you like how they work.

It seems that sequence (chains) length is limited to 16 bars, but this is no true. There is really no limit in the sequence length because you can chain “chains” easily in the main sequencer screen. Trackers are really a distint workflow, so you have to try and see. In my experience there is almost no limits if you know how to use it.

I dont know the answer to the last question. I have not tried to record any sequences with a midi keyboard.

Page 33 of the manual says

recording MIDI notes from an external controller can be accomplished by selecting the correct “REC. NOTE CHAN” channel for your controller and highlighting a note column in the phrase view. While the song is playing, notes will be inserted based on the time they were played.

So I guess the answer is yes? Whatever you play in real time will be recorded as is?

Great thanks!

I saw a discussion in another thread about whether “MK II” is pronounced “Mark Two” or “Em Kay Two”

So what do we call the M8? “Em Eight” or “Mate”?

It’s funny you mentions this. While I was driving home from work today thinking about my m8 it dawned on me “wait, it’s pronounced mate not em eight” The thought hadn’t ever occurred to me before this moment… I’m kind of dumb.

I call it em eight but it does not matter.

I thought it was mate

M-8 I would call em eight

But yeah not that it matters

If you look at p33 there is a setting to record Del and Kill commands. Del will delay the note by a number of tics as recorded- kind of like the micro timing recording on Elektron, except it can only be late not early. Though I guess early notes would be on the previous step, unless there is already something in there. And kill are note offs
