That’s good to know. Em eight tracker flows a lot better IMO and it’s what I’m used to calling it, so getting the official word from the M8’s creator at least matters to my OCD mind.
While this is interesting information, let us look again at the question posed by @tlemetry
“Can you opt to record non-quantized?”
My understanding is, he wants to play MIDI in real time on a keyboard or drum pad, and have it recorded in real time.
My M8Tracker is scheduled to arrive next week. I will test with my Keystep 37.
Yes- if you’re recording the del you’re recording it to the nearest tic instead of the nearest step. So not quantised to the step
I will let @tlemetry answer for themself if you understood their question or not.
it is possible I misunderstood the question myself. In any case, I will test, based on my own understanding, when the M8 arrives.
Mine is in my city in the dept but not getting delivered until Monday
What a coincidence. Mine is scheduled for Monday arrival as well
There is an option in the midi setting to record notes unquantized. It adds delay commands.
Need to dive into midi more on M8 soon… does anyone know if it let’s you record audio input when you do a render? Seems like it would be a great way to build up a track using one external synth.
@GovernorSilver Your understanding is correct. Looking forward to your test. Thanks!
I want one.
No but you can sample the audio input while it’s being played from the sequencer. Rendering is not realtime (can’t play samples and write to sd at the same time without dropouts)
I’m sure this has been talked about before, but how are people organizing their chains in song mode? Are you pre-assigning a certain range of numbers to chains for each track? Such as track 1 getting 00-1F and track 2 getting 20-2D, and so on and so forth?
I always start this way. But by the time I’ve got a foundation together and inspiration is starting to hit, the EDIT-EDIT shortcut (add a new whatever in the first available slot) is is just too tempting and it all goes to hell
This thing looks so cool! Will be keeping an eye on it, as well towards what ppl make with it.
I’ve definitely been realizing how important it is to keep track of what numbers you’re assigning to song sections and phrases. It can be a pain in the ass trying to sort through a bunch of randomly assigned numbers.
I didn’t know about the edit-edit combo. Is it a way to quickly create new instruments in the phrase section? Or can it be used in the chains and songs sections as well?
EDIT-EDIT (like you’re double-clicking it) will create a new thing in the first unused spot for just about everything. Chain, phrase, instrument, table, groove — it does it all.
If you go into select mode first (so, SHIFT-OPTION then EDIT-EDIT) it will make a copy of the selected thing into the first empty slot (instead of just creating a new empty one). Pretty useful!
The M8 is really starting to click for me now. It’s so easy to export a song and turn it into a sample to be re-chopped, and all of the sampling options are way more extensive than I expected. The fact that you can use tables on samples and have them running at speeds that are different from your phrases- this interaction is so powerful and makes it really easy to create evolving phrases- I’d say it’s as important a feature as scenes are to the Octatrack.
Before I received my M8, I thought that my Polyend Tracker would undoubtedly keep its place as my go to sample-based tracker. I do still love the simplicity of its workflow (there’s no denying its well-designed device), but I’m discovering that the M8 could cover almost all of my sampling needs! It does require a few work arounds for making proper sample chops, but it more than makes up for this by giving me tons of other tools for sample manipulation.
The fact that each track is free-flowing is also amazing. It makes me think that I don’t need my Blackbox anymore as well. I mean, it’s kind of embarrassing but I went really overboard this year by buying a ton of samplers. I could definitely afford to pair down at this point. All of these samplers have been amazing in their own way and I’d still recommend them to people, but the M8 just works so well with my brain… So yeah, my final sampling setup for this year and next will be my M8, Octatrack, and up-and-coming SP-404 mkII. I stand by this claim so anyone here is allowed hold me to it and make me feel bad if I show the slightest interest in any other samplers.
I really enjoyed your video and the fast forward unboxing at the end was interesting - I have one of the original run so didn’t get one of the little pouches or cases. It would be cool if @trash80 made some available…
The travel case is kinda loose for the beta because it lacks the aluminum frame. It’d be rad if I made a new alu frame for beta but at such a small number it would be prohibitively expensive.
