I was impressed by the videos and streams, and the quality of the software (running headless) had me really hopeful. But honestly, I don’t think I really expected this thing to feel as good as it looked.
And I’ll be damned if it doesn’t feel better.
The M8 has singlehandedly made up for the last three or four disappointing preorders I signed on to — and most of those from bigger teams with bigger budgets. I’m still kind of in disbelief.
i can’t think of a preorder that has been better handled. lots of communication and unceasing optimism from trash80, meaningful software updates during the waiting time and the incredibly helpful meetups (i watched after broadcast using the timestamps)
plus the m8 was barely delayed even during a global pandemic, shopping crisis and chip shortage
the physicality and user interface is exquisitely useable and beautiful too. to me it’s straight into the pantheon with the best electronic music hardware like the buchla easel, junos and soma lyra-8
I’d never used a tracker before and to be honest thought they looked baffling but in use they (or the m8) is simple to get a handle on. it feels midway between an elektron box with parameter locks and (when using the tables) hardware modular step sequencers
100% the best instrument named after a scottish motorway
Curious if you tested the Lexar Pro 1800x 32gb?
After some research I am seeing differences between the 64 and 128gb models, but the 32 and 64gb versions are spec’d the same. I have the 32, so if the 64 works I’d think this should too?
I formatted using the recommended formatting tool, and after placing the card in the m8 I can see the file structure was auto-generated.
At this point, if I take the SD card out and put it in a PC, I can see that the default themes are in the appropriate folder and the other folders are empty for the most part since it’s a clean card (other than what the m8 loaded onto it).
However, in the m8 itself I attempt to change themes and the folder will load but no themes are in it. Then going up a level the themes folder is now gone completely. Same if I were to put a sample on the card, load it… nothing in folder, then folder goes away… Not sure what to try.
I have my Sandisk that came with the m8 and it is working fine, but if the Lexar has some bw I’d like to use that since I have it. Thanks for your time!
Dang, yeah… That’s what I thought it might be, but was hoping you might know something that I didn’t think of. Thanks for the reply. Also, I love this thing. Like, “my wife may be getting jealous” kind of love. I figured out how to integrate the tables into my instruments/songs and mind blown. Things are now on a whole. nutha. level.
I received my M8 today. For the first few hours that I with it, everything felt pretty awkward to navigate, but at some point along the way, it all started to click. Not to say that I know my way around it now, but I’ve gotten a glimpse into just how well designed this thing is. Everything is laid out super logically and provides a fluid, enjoyable workflow.
I bought the M8 with sampling in mind, but now that I’ve explored some of the synth engines and experienced how they’re brought to life with the sequencer (haven’t even explored tables yet)…. Wow. Just, Wow.
I’ve already decided that this thing will stay with me forever. It’s up there with the Octatrack in terms of being an extremely powerful, artfully designed instrument. It’s that good.
“I haven’t explored tables yet” sounds like it’s a pretty common refrain of reviews online and comments around here (myself included).
As an experiment, I banned myself from using any ENVs or LFOs the last few days to force myself to get a feel for tables. At first I was just recreating what I could have done easier with the purpose-built tools, but soon I was tripping over happy accidents and ideas for pushing my modulation further. And I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface.
Anyway, I highly recommend the practice to anyone just learning the M8. Tables are stupid powerful, but unnecessary enough that they can run the risk of being overlooked. It’s helpful to force yourself to use them.
Totally agree. I’ve been using LSDJ over 8 years and for that reason I’m not too good using tables.
BTW in the M8 is there any way to create a table not associated to an instrument? I mean, if I create the instrument number one, this one has associated by default the first table.
