the acid synth is definitely one of the built ins
ghostwerk makes sope m8 tracks ! lol
likewise partner !
feelin pretty yeehaw right now !
So hereās a thing that probably doesnāt exist that I would like to pair with the m8: a tiny keyboard, battery powered, with DIN midi out. Is there such a thing? Reface series is the smallest I know of (or OP-Z, oy).
no intrenal battery tho
Yeah. It runs off of a teensy though, so it should be really easy to add a battery.
You might find some hints here:
Yeah usb powered too, I was talking to the developer on discord and a purpose built battery pack that clips on could be a possibility in the future. It is a great little controller and I havenāt been messing with the beta os but there are some really interesting creative features for its inbuilt sequencer also for coming up with ideas.
Just ordered one. A clip-on battery would be great. Iām actually not super interested in the sequencer part if Iām using it with a tracker, but the hardware configuration and hackability could make it a good option for building something I would like to have in a midi controller, which is musical scale highlighting.
Yeah, I didnāt get it for the sequencer either but I was looking at some of the new beta features and someone mentioned it is getting close to some 0-Ctrl type features with these sort of randomization events for sequencer play modes. Step probability (percentage)
Step Type (play, mute, forward, reverse, random step, random event)
Conditional trigs (elektron style). I could see making a really short arp like pattern with randomization and then recording the midi to the M8 or my Digitakt. I really should dig into it a bit more really I just love the feel of it though.
A small victory!
Now I just need to learn how to use it
Headless M8 on Raspberry Pi 4 (and teensy 4.1)
Iām in the process of doing that too. Looks promising.
An update after 24hrs w/ M8(headless)ā¦
-
My Teensy4.1 found a nice new home (and also found a use for some of those model:samples stickers).
-
I ditched the pi4 in favor of an otherwise underused cheapo chromebook that I had laying around (not sure why I didnāt try this method first). Much more portable and comfy.
-
The big oneā¦. THIS WEBSITE!!! https://derkyjadex.github.io/M8WebDisplay/ essentially makes the M8 headless setup as simple as plug and playā¦. Check out the GitHub for more details ( GitHub - derkyjadex/M8WebDisplay: Display for headless M8 tracker) We truly live in amazing times.

Watching the beginning of M8 discord meetup #2 (https://youtu.be/NEI9ocrp-Oo) and being able to follow along on the headless setup was more than enough to venture off on my own and start having and absolute blast. The M8 ui has a very well thought out flow that makes navigation pretty damn intuitive, I was a little surprised to find one of the more shallow learning curves that Iāve experienced, especially given the depth of this instrument (you can do a LOT!!!).
I havenāt sat with a single instrument and just explored for this many hours on end in a very long time, itās really refreshing.
Do yourself a favor, buy a teensy, make M8 headless, have a giant hoot, throw all your money at Trash80
Iāll see you guys in a month or so with the hiphop chiptune album Ive been quietly cooking for the last two decades, I think it finally found its oven.
After years of reading elektronauts many times a day I finally signed up just to say how much I agree with @TheGhostCat on this. M8 headless running on a teensy plugged into an old mac laptop is an incredible instrument!
I was signed up to Trash80s patreon for a while but decided I couldnāt afford a hardware M8 and an Oxi One so went with this ācompromiseā and am extremely happy with it. I should get some more money to Trash80 as well as the headless set up is worth far more than the cost of a teensy.
M8WebDisplay works better for me as well, better than the method recommended on the M8 github page using touch designer. Chrome and the teensy do crash occasionally but it is easy to restart.
Yoo @ZackDelta welcome to the forum (top notch first post).
I have a very strong feeling that anyone who goes down this road will be preordering a real M8 as soon as the opportunity opens back upā¦. But I know what you mean, maybe itās time to lock back in to that trash80 patreon to pay away a little of the guilt?
I havenāt experienced a crash yetā¦ thereās an option in the chrome browser to download the page run it as an offline app, might be worth a try if you havenāt yet.
This looks like a great set-up! Personally, Iām torn between waiting for the hardware M8 to ship or trying to learn it now on a teensy. As soon as I step near a computer or phone my ADHD takes over so I think I need to wait for the dedicated hardware.
Are there any standout features or cool tips youāve noticed so far?
My thought on this is, why not dive in early if you can? Imo M8 headless is worth the (now very minimal) setup effort required if you have the right tools. Iād say that if you are interested in the real M8 then the headless setup gives you an early look into whether or not you will click with it, at a very low buy inā¦ that seems like a ācanāt loseā situation to me.
I get where youāre coming from. The website setup linked above can run offline, and since my chromebook wasnāt really being used otherwise, it is now essentially a giant dedicated M8ā¦. Yes itās 10x the size of M8, but itās also as distraction free as I need.
Yea the whole thing is a standout feature lol.
Iām at the tip of the iceberg still so I donāt have much of value to add at this point but the discord meetup videos have been very helpful for little tips and tricks.
TLDR: learn it now on teensy, fly around like a pro on day 1 with the real deal when it shows up.
Got it going headless as well. Was very impressed how quickly the minimal controls Became intuitive.
hey your mix is really good!
