M8 Tracker

I’m happy for both of us, then.

This mix is pretty dope, it’s making me all the more excited to receive mine hearing all the sounds this thing is capable of.

Question regarding your headless, I’m going into this expecting the workflow to be stingy with processing power. I dont expect to be able to have 8 tracks of synths running free on this thing. If I find a sound I like I expect to have to sample it- is that a fair expectation or am I not giving it enough credit?

actually on headless its better to have all synthesis ! because of sample cpu interupts from the teensy or bumping the sd card / this will not happen on the actual unit and i haven’t had it happen lately after a few updates ! also m8 seamlessly plays the next loaded song while the current one is playing ! so if you don’t have two for mixing you can just rush some reverb and delay at the end of the last track and play a set. but yeah with headless you will most likely be interupted by ableton asio drivers or voice meter.

heres a recent change log:
2021-06-09 - Version 2.0.3

  • New: Physical output volume setting hearing protection - If volume is above “F0”, volume is reset to “F0” on power up and disconnecting/inserting headphone jack.
  • New: Bundling a song now exports all instruments in a new subfolder “Instruments”
  • Improved: Maximum output volume increased
  • Improved: Performance/CPU optimizations
  • Improved: Remote display - only send button presses when they are changed
  • Fix: Table - last row did not work if tic was set to FF
  • Fix: MIDI Mapping multiple instruments when viewing instrument screen caused mapping issues
  • Fix: Sample editor - Zoomed selection movements was inaccurate and had visual artifacts
  • Fix: Sampler - Note preview occasionally not working on slice mode

///// then 2.0.4 was a minor bug fix.

to directly answer the 8 track synthesis cpu question though i believe that m8 can handle anything you try to do with it

Oh wow! Brilliant! For such an awesome all capable device for so cheap I would have expected a it of compromise.

I wish the distance between me and my pre-order were one I could run across!

Thanks for your insight!

I wanna try one so bad. Tried to order a couple of months ago and no dice.

On the bright side- do you know the hell that is impatience on a vague pre-order status?! Hope entices this feeling of longing.

I want to order a digitakt, but I’ve got a m8 incoming.

(I’ve also got a stimming EX that who knows where that’s at- so I’m really buried in this unease…)

lol after i ordered my m8 early bird for 500$ i got an email from SOMA that my waiting list spot for pulsar-23 was on ! lol forgot i even signed up after i started using M8!

Well, I ended up with 2 Polyend Trackers so if anyone gets tired of their M8 or wants to swap for a while, I’m around. And I get where you’re coming from. That pre-order feeling is what kept me from ordering a Soma Cosmos. When I spend that kind of money, I want the product. M8 just seems awesome though.

why dont we set you up on M8 headless setup / its about 50$ all you need is a teensy 4.1 and a good SD card. theres youtube tutorials and github documentation to get you started in 5 mins or less lol !

then i use my ps4 gamepad to control it cuz im lazzzyy

2x M8s can’t be an easy workflow…

I mean I bet stop/start should be easy but I reckon you need to parallel your compositions side by side.

At that point I’d be inclined to just attach the tracks to Renoise.

Keep in mind I dont know what I’m talking about

my IDM elektron buddy ordered 2x m8s and uses renoise as his main lol  in one of the m8 meetups trash80 shows off two synced up its pretty nice ! the only thing you would have to conisider is time signatures like lately ive been writing 7/4 in 190 bpms and it involves a hop command that skips 8 steps on the last pattern out of 64 so opnce i get my skeleton going i just keep cloning patterns and im cruising . so on both M8s you would set that up on 16 channels then copy paste your way to banger town !

I’ve tried Logic, I’ve tried Ableton, I’ve tried Bitwig

Renoise is the DAW that just makes the most sense to me. Renoise is the reason I preordered the Poly Tracker. Renoise is the reason I cancelled the PT preorder. Renoise is the reason why I obviously OBVIOUSLY preordered the m8.

Tracker workflow is just the most logical workflow I’ve ever come across.

eventually ill get renoise down but i do so much better with some sort of controller that can do every command / i ended up mapping a ps4 controller to renoise and based my controls of LSDj which would be like m8 just to place notes and move the mouse around with the joy stick. but maybe one day there will be renoise hardware lol or i could set up so many midi controllers i wouldn’t have to use a mouse and keyboard. Back when i was more adamant about being good at ableton producing i got an ableton push 1 and it boosted my creativity and helped me pump tracks out in 30 minutes. so if there was a dedicated hardware unit for renoise like push id be all over it in a heartbeat / however there is a third party renoise extension for using ableton push with renoise but i think its better with push 2 .

Also one of the reasons i got polyend tracker was in hopes it would be close to renoise.

I’ve tried Ableton + Push 2 and it felt like it was a degree away from the music. Maschine felt a bit closer to the music making than the Push 2. Even now it has its uses.

Renoise + a keyboard feels like a much more intimate controller than the push to me for some reason.

Idfk why- but the tracker workflow is just perfect- these things that supposedly tried to enhance computer music beyond that- I dont get it.

I understand that M8 is more phrase oriented than Renoise(despite phrases being a feature of Renoise)(I’m basically just using Renoise as sheet music when composing my tracks)

Hopefully the m8 will force me out of my comfort zone as far as that’s concerned.

It’s so exciting to meet someone thats as eager to get the m8 that already has some experience with the workflow.

Thanks again for the 30 minute mix- it’ll make the next 1.5 months easier as I anticipate the incoming package

hey no problem i bet theres a few other people in the forum gassing about it / all i can say is get headless and start learning its worth the price of the teensy and sd card. i mean im getting pretty ancy on the headless as time goes on but ive logged like whole weekends on that thing ! m8 has been forcing me to complete stuff / and when i had my OT/DN/Rytm setup i just couldn’t get a whole song going without it being a long stoner jam. it was very hard for me to get out of the loop and having ADHD is terrible for music organization between 3 boxes!

here is also a longer mix i made before that one, which will have some of the same tracks but way more short clips and genres lol !
