Maybe they’ll make a rack version, and then it could just be added to an existing Poly AT setup. The synth itself actually sounds nice, and seems to pack a lot into a small space. Definitely would be a nice gap-filler in some setups. Personally, I can’t see ever owning a wavetable synth that isn’t either an M or a 3rd Wave after owning both of those. Kinda spoiled me, and I plan to grab another 3rd Wave when I’m able to pair with the Super Gemini for Poly AT control.
My spoiled views aside, the ModWave is a nice sounding wavetable synth. Up there with Waldorfs, etc. IMO. Having the additional modes makes this a nice all-purpose sort of digital synth.
Also Korg makes a Hydra/Medeli based Poly AT controller, so since they already use that hardware for that, they could easily make a 61 Key version of this with PolyAT IMO. That would make it so much more attractive for this type of synth as you said.
Looks like poly AT is an option if we have poly AT controllers.
From the manual: AT Source (Aftertouch Source) [Off, Channel, Poly, Chan+Poly] This lets you instantly re-configure the synth to take advantage of controllers with Poly Aftertouch. Off: All aftertouch will be ignored. Channel: The mod source “Aftertouch” receives Channel Aftertouch. Poly Aftertouch can still be used via the dedicated Poly AT mod source. Poly: The mod source “Aftertouch” receives Poly Aftertouch. Channel Aftertouch is ignored. Chan+Poly: The mod source “Aftertouch” receives both Channel and Poly Aftertouch. If both are sent simultaneously, the most recent value is used.
This is when I’m upset that the Maschine+ doesn’t do poly AT. It’s what I use for my main sequencer and don’t get to put my hydras and what not to the test.
I don’t see how this is the case with the waveshapers and ring mod on board as well as the dual filters. Also, the SE M/P filter sounds pretty good to me.
Pity Korg is calling this an analogue modeling synth (though I supose the wave shapers are, in fact, analog models) because it’s really East+West VA plus wavetables with four parts and motion sequencing.
For myself, I’d much rather have that waveshaping than the samples in the Modwave.
This is the main sticking point for me - well, that and the Mod assignments UI (which is just as klunky on the modwave and the wavestate).
I think I’d still rather have a 4 or 5 octave bed with AT and a proper mains cable, but Korg isn’t going to do that.
Oh, they might release an SE, but it won’t use a mains cable if they do (the wavestate and opsix SE’s use the same power adapter with barrel connector the 37 key versions do).
I’d also really hope for a larger display with the larger version, but that’s not likely either, as the SE form factor is pretty much set.
The power connector decision for all companies in general has a lot to do with easier worldwide certification. Plus it makes selling all the different power standards easier too.
Oh, sure, I understand why they do it that way, but I’d still rather have an IEC cable - there’s certainly more than enough room in the SE chassis for an internal power supply.
I’d guess after they got burned on the Prologues they aren’t too keen to go with internal supplies.
Sounds great, powerful sound engine, multitimbral, pretty hands-on, nice UI… this might currently be the best sub-1k VA+WT synth on the market. Even reminds me a bit of a Virus with those dual filters and wavetables…
This looks suuuper deep and complex
and that really begs the question whether or not someone wants to go so deep
a programmers dream
a players nightmare?
I’m intrigued but I don’t think I have the programming chops to find this at all fun, it looks messy and slow to me for my needs/workflow. Plus IIRC the keybeds on these kinda blow, not a players delight.
props to Korg for continuing to push these products forward, this has to make some deep synth nerds really pleased!
Few weeks ago I was researching wavetable options for my small setup. Modular with Ziqual Dimension was the first thought, but I wanted at least 2 separate “timbres” - but together with all other stuff it apperaed to be too expensive comparing to Korg Modwave rack version, which has everything I wanted and a lot more. I almost put an order yesterday, but… my wallet gently weeps after Digitone II and now Korg Multi/Poly were announced. Multi/Poly looks like have the same features as Modwave, and it’s 4 timbral, so even better. Can’t see the rack version though, so wait or not?
Looks neat. I like the descriptions they have of how they modeled the envelopes, portamento, and other stuff like that. Plus you get a little bit of modwave and wavestate stuff going with the kaoss physics and layers and lanes. Probably not going to be the most intuitive thing to program, but I can see it being even more fun with a Linnstrument once you get the hang of it.
