Is your synth collection worth more than your car?

No, though (1) it’s a shared car and (2) I bike everywhere anyway.

My bike collection probably cost me more to build than my synths but not more than my synths plus guitars and basses.

I got into Eurorack around 2017. At the time I was driving delivery for Dominos making minimum wage. I got fascinated by modular and spent my money buying modules instead of fixing the car that I needed to use for work. The car ended up dying and I got fired from that job, but the modular fascination led me to teach myself electronics and PCB design and I was able to get a real job out of it, so it ended up working out for me.

Also I still drive a 2007 Toyota Carolla with manual windows and door locks that has 230,000 miles on it. Great car.

Yes. But that’s saying more about my car.

I know. I owned a car pretty much continuously from age 16 to age 50+. (A small gap during grad school in the Bay Area.) I gave mine up when it died just as I was about to move to an apartment building with only outdoor parking. I thought I’d give it a try without, even though public transit was quite lacking (fortunately the new place was an easy commute to work, I could walk there, it was just a dull walk). I did fine and never looked back. Moves since then have prioritized access to public transit, such as it is.

Trick question: I drive an electric car (used Kia Niro EV) that makes a variety of beeps, clangs, drones, and boops because of weird Korean safety laws, so it’s at least as much of a musical instrument as my modular gear.

If I ever were to get a license (unlikely, but there’s always the lottery), I absolutely agree. I often wonder how car design turned to shit this badly after the 90ies (and the 90ies were not that great either, 80ies were clearly the best decade in terms of stylish cars)

yeah i sold a strat to buy a puppy

My current car is the newest I’ve ever had, and is a '99. It’s also one of my favorites. Most of my cars have ranged from 1970 up to 1999.

I get my wife new cars, because I really only want one car that I do most of my own work on. I also like new safety things for her and the kids, and she likes comfortable cars, where I like… …zippy… cars.

Last week, yes… this week, no.

Wow what a sobering tought that what they gave me for my old vehicle as a trade in for the new one would not cover my synth / gear collection….

But you do have a freakin’ airplane.

If I could afford a plane, I would have a Synthi 100 and a CS80 instead.

Well, you need a Gulfstream with a pilot, and a Synthi 100 and CS-80 built into the luxury passenger cabin.

If I had a Synthi 100, I could fly without a pilot. Or a plane. :flying_saucer:

Pretty sure my drumkit is worth more than my car.
Let alone my synth collection.

my old car it was but I bought a new car this year that is worth more than my synths.

I have a bike, not a car. It cost 10x the cost of my synths. I’m not sure which my neighbours dislike more…

Never owned a powered vehicle, I’ve been a city person since finishing college.

My first four track cassette deck, used Casio CZ-101, and Yamaha RX-17 drum machine were bought with what was intended to be savings for a used car.

Ah, the road not taken … so to speak …
