Is your synth collection worth more than your car?

My gear used to cost more than my car, but I’ve sold most of it. Now it’s kinda tricky, because I have some stuff that didn’t cost much when I bought it, but if I could sell it for American prices, it would be 10-30x more expensive. So it cost me less than my car, it’s probably worth less than my car in local prices, but it would absolutely be worth more than it if I somehow brought it to the US.

My car was $4000 three years ago, and it’s an adequate car, but I’d definitely upgrade it if I had the money. If I suddenly got really rich, I’d buy a Hyundai Ioniq 3, it’s the only fancy EV available here. But not because of the power, 60 hp is enough for my current small car, I don’t think I’d ever need anything over 100 hp even for a big car.

Good point

I don’t put a huge amount into my car. Just enough to keep things working properly.

I have more or less a static synth funds pool. Synths come in and out but overall synth/recording gear pool stays roughly the same.

Scratch that.

4 grand.
That is how much a car should cost. Approve.

I think you’ve read an extra zero there.

Also cars are way more expensive here. I guess my car would cost $2000 in the US, or even less. Well, at least I was able to buy a Juno 106 for $53.

I think this is a much more logical way of thinking about this. I wonder what would be a reasonable percentage to spend on gear? Is this pre- or post- tax income? If pre-tax then I don’t think I’ve hit my 1% quota for the year (I really haven’t bought much gear this year, I’ll proudly say!)

Yes.

It would make more sense for post-tax income, I think. That means, this year I could afford something from Behringer. Instead, I haven’t bought anything, and maybe up to 10% of my income this year is from selling gear.

My synth collection is worth less than half my car’s worth, but that’s because I have a fairly new Audi. It was going to be my “last harrah” for a car, the car I always wanted. It was also the only way in the US you can get into a “true wagon” these days. But, I love my priorities. They are three. Synths, cameras, car. The good news is that they are each worth much more than the cost of all the alcohol I’ve consumed in the past 40 years (zero dollars), drugs (zero dollars), casinos (zero dollars), Man toys (zero dollars, okay a canoe), conspicuous consumption (not much).

I don’t have a synth collection and I mainly walk, run or ride my bike. The two bikes I own cost me more than my synth(s). Their lifespan exceeds the one of my synths by many years. If any of my synths would be as old as one of my bike’s frame I’d be in the @Scot_Solida league.

Yes, proudly

My collection? Lol. I could have bought a Super car with the money i’ve spent.

Yes of course. What of it ?

Though I have a driver‘s license.

If I owned a car, it would probably be worth less than even my Elektrons. And the motors in my NINA would probably be better than that in my car.

mine worth infinitely more as i have no use for a car lol

:sob::rofl:. I almost spit out my Cuban coffee reading this. As a car/pro audio gear enthusiast, I find this hilarious and fairly true unless you’re an equal opportunity car/gearhead like myself.

I have a couple of vehicles that cost more than one of the condos that houses most of my gear. I can confidently promise that driving or even just riding in any of my vehicles is a lot of things, none of them boring. I invite anyone who disagrees to a quick blast up 95/i5 if ever in Miami Metro or Hollywood but you gotta let me post a picture of your post-ride skivs here for proof of who was right :sweat_drops: .

Nice thread.

You gotta be a poor artist man! Struggling artist trope who’s victimized by high inflation lack of gigs but utter dedication to buying more gear and releasing no music :innocent:

I’d get scoffed at for buying nice clothes from my creative friends lol let alone a 600 hp space ship

What car? :innocent:

My current priorities as well. And midcentury furniture.

Ahhh, midcentury furniture. Room and Board is headquartered where I live (Minneapolis), we have spent many Saturday mornings at their outlet center, looking for deals on midcentury furniture that we can actually afford. We’ve found some really good deals!
