this question just occured to me re. the price of the new roland tr1000 and me thinking it was more expensive than my car, but i found out my car is worth about twice the price of a tr1000 - then i started adding the value of my synth collection together and things spiralled…so here we are…and looking at it pessimistically i think my car is still worth more than my synth collection which has not always been the case but it is now and i am glad for that!
can’t afford a car bcos of my synths
jokes aside, who needs a car when you can have a spaceship at home?
Don‘t have a car (or a driver‘s license for that matter), so by definition: Yes, absolutely.
yeah, I actually have a driving license. but when my first crappy car broke, I bought a synth instead and never looked back
This is a trick question, I don’t even have a driver’s license
gear worth more then my car - wife’s car is a different story
I haven’t owned a car for more than a decade now, and I get the impression that they have recently gone way up in price, while synths are getting cheaper. But I have a lot of modular now, and I tended to buy my cars new and hang onto them until they could not be fixed any more, and they depreciate quickly, so chances are the answer would have been yes, were I still in my old situation. However, my synths don’t come with ongoing bills for maintenance, fuel, and insurance.
I buy synths because my car can’t.
But car has cupholder…
I don’t have a car.
Have spent 10k plus on synths.
A car cannot take you out of the solar system.
This is an absolutely brilliant question.
For me the answer is fully and proudly yes, my music gear is worth many times my car.
Cars are boring stupid practical devices, in my experience people who are proud of their car are (a) dangerous on the road and (b) bad to be cornered by at social events.
For gear… High or low income, every year of adult life I’ve spent about 1% of my income on music things. Selling and buying as I go, the float is now pretty substantial. If I’d bought it in one go I’d feel guilty and embarrassed about the silly money. But the 1% annual cost in context is entirely fine. And it’s a brilliant part of my life. I love it all, jointly and singly, every last cable, I remember how and where and why I bought every single thing I still have.
Lol no. Not even a quarter of what a used version of my car would go for, and I have a boring sedan
You could sell your car and quadruple your synth collection.
Just saying.
Probably, but that says more about how old my car is (20 years) than how many synths I have.
This is a tad judgmental. Cars attract enthusiasts the same way synths do. Neither type is more boring than the other depending on the cornered listener at the social event.
Well, I have only half a car. A motorbike. Which is worth less than half of my music gear. However:
It start quicker than my studio
It has battery unlike most my gear
It makes great sounds when fired up, eve without playing
It cuts corners better than any Electron hacks
Warming up its rubber makes it tight instead of a rubber coating mess
All knobs and buttons are single purpose
It comes with two stands of its own
Its a hybrid of great analog and digital
Its 100% inspirational every time its started
Its very easy to transport to a gig
It kills bugs, instead of suffering from bugs
It speeds through a roadmap faster than a new flagship drum computer
And last, not least:
It does exactly what I want
I don‘t dare to do the math.
When i drove to session (music store in Frankfurt) in my polo it was raining into my car, i had the open air edition… i felt guilty as the sub37 should fund another repair … but yeah … there is also a subway i can take.
Yeah it definitely is, but I’m trying to sell all my eurorack shit so hopefully I can get that number down.
No, both of my vehicles cost more than my music gear.
