Is your synth collection worth more than your car?

oh yes

  1. My synths have more equity
  2. Other than the radio, my truck only plays a single pitch and there’s no FX bus

My favorite is built like a tank, has manual steering, and I have to be careful not to oversteer the wheels in traffic and my parking lot is worth more than my bank account. Sounds about right.

It was, but then I needed to buy a car at short notice right after covid…

Not synths alone but the total value of my synths, guitars, amps, and pedals is likely close to the value of my car. This is actually the first car I’ve ever owned that was expensive enough for this to be true though (8 year old hybrid with low mileage), I rarely spent more than 2k on one before which is like one half stack and a guitar. I like my car fine, but I love my music gear. I would also sell my car immediately if I could get away without owning one and the only thing that gets me to sell a piece of gear besides not enjoying it is when my dog got sick and needed lots of expensive vet things or I needed to make room for different gear.

That collection is worth more than all of the cars I have ever owned put together, and probably my father’s as well.

i think my synth/outboard stuff and 2 vehicles i own are around the same value in total one just doesnt cost as much to maintain/insurance/gas etc

also car culture is kinda lame. there are good passionate peeps but if you don’t go to track often its mostly a peepee measuring contest over horse power and MSRP

Yes but how do you know if I only have a Roland T8 and if I drive a rusted out piece of garbage?

By virtue of my car being borderline worthless because it was an ancient Ford Focus from one of the batches with possible transmission problems… yes. I sold it for basically the minimum amount I could legally get away with to a friend because I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of actually selling it for scant amount of money it was worth. (I say minimum amount I could legally get away with because in my old state the receiver of a gift car gets taxed and if it looks like the sale was engineered to avoid that tax the state will come after you)

A car is just a means of transport. Thats all. It needs to perform an essential function and mine does that. Its old. It was cheap. Its not flashy and it doesnt need to be.

My musical instrument collection is easily worth way more than my car both in terms of money and importance.

I have always driven cheap cars. Never bought a new car, and the costliest car I’ve ever had was inherited (and it wasn’t remotely fancy). But that’s one reason I’ve been able to build up my synth collection: very questionable priorities.

But yeah. It’s not even close.

There is an endless fixation on automobiles in North American culture (and many other places). They are wrong. Nothing amiss with your priorities.

I am in total agreement.

Is a car still worth it in 2025?

Mine doesn’t… :frowning:

I disagree. I enjoy driving almost as much as making music. A car CAN JUST be a mode of transport, but it’s definitely not limited to that. Similar to something like ā€œA computer is just a means to write documents.ā€ Unless you load it up with games and music software. Then it’s a creative outlet, a means of entertainment, hobby (if you like building them) etc.

There is no one definition for any object or how it’s used. It’s as subjective as anything gets.

A car is worth it in 2025, as long as it was made before the year 2000. (my opinion)

Public transportation is a mess everywhere I’ve lived in America. I would have to take 3 busses to commute the 3 miles to my job. A lot of people I know end up just taking ubers. Biking is nice in the summer but we get harsh winters here and even if you bundle up your chances of getting pancaked by a car go way up in the winter because they aren’t looking for bikes.
