The Lightning-to-iPhone dongle works for me because I am usually using earphones with a smaller jack. With the iPad Pro, I want to use better cans, and the larger jack pulls the dongle cord down. It’s also harder to connect/disconnect and of course I can’t charge simultaneously. I bought a Hyper USB-C hub that clips to the side of the iPad but for some reason the headphone jack isn’t always noticed, and when it is, AUM switches audio in to the (non-existent) headphone mike. Nothing fatal, but low-level annoyances.
One cool advantage when iPad has a headphone out is that with just a simple stereo interface & the help of Audiobus you can get 4 assignable mono outs - the L&R on the interface + the L & R on the headphone out.
As is always the case more ram means you can theoretically run more apps simultaneously with less problems, I’ve got the new iPad air and I’ve yet to find a situation that’s made it falter, all my projects have at least 5 or 6 auv3 plugins running in them on top of the host and multiple FX auv3 as well, obviously I can’t forsee your mileage, but if it were me I’d be gunning for the newer model, just because 1 it’s newer and I would imagine it’s seen a lot less action in the battery dept. and 2 as has been mentioned before storage is relatively cheap these days and I’d be very surprised if you hit any walls performance wise with it…
@your_lamp sent me this link which is a too-long (and not comprehensive) list of apps. There is even more choice than with hardware devices, so it’s more important to focus on what you want to do, rather than what you might like to do someday.
I and everyone else on this thread will have opinions on what we like but most of that will not be pertinent to your needs. So you need to help us zoom in on what might actually help you…!
Exactly. What kind of workflow do you prefer, what kind of sounds do you like, do you want to perform live, jam, produce tracks… Out of thousands of possible combinations, there’s probably a starter pack of 3-5 apps to recommend based on the answers to those questions.
A reoccurring question and quite rightly so. There is a plethora to dive in to. I’d first advise to scroll through this thread because there are so many fucking dope answers. Within the year you’d have gone through heaps of apps and got to the point where you need to remove some of the ones you’ve paid for.
The Power of the iPad has always been limited by Apple. No matter which one you get, Apple will screw you over. Therefor personally I’m never going to buy another iPad until it can do as much or more than any random laptop at 1/4 the price. Apple been claiming so much about iPad for more than a decade long now and they never truly deliver.
