Introducing Digitakt II

Looks like it is the same kinda issue as with Macbook M1 and M2 when Apple used slower memory for it’s cheapest version of M2 and even cheapest M1 macbook was faster than M2 in memory speeds.

there’s no way the memory would be a limiting factor here, it could be that by moving to a new foundation to develop upon that they haven’t implemented or fine-tuned it, it seems implausible they don’t know this is the case, perhaps OB (when it follows) will allow a new approach to sample management and upload … who knows, maybe it’s throttled for a reason … if it’s creating so much consternation you can only assume they will get onto it maybe after they have got OB sorted out etc

i add samples when i need them (to keep the drive clean and prevent choice paralysis) so i’m not exactly going to become a great advocate for this cause, but waiting hours sounds frustrating (especially if it hangs) but it’s only once in a while that a whole library will ever be uploaded

Yeah I agree with all of that. This is more of a bottleneck than it is a blocker to actually work on the device. Not the end of the world. Of course they are still working on the OB integration and other things, support requests are probably piled up post-launch, and Europe is on May holidays right now.

Like I said I am just hopeful for some kind of comment/acknowledgement to the degree of “It is being looked into” since I have seen Elektron devs chime in here on the topic :v:

For me the best improvement is the sampling option…never used it too much on DT1 cause it wasn’t a real sync between the pattern and record…now imo it’s much more easy to use it…less hasszle like on OT.

Anyone knows max sample length for import? (@LyingDalai)

As usual, very good job on the DTII

So far so good. I could painfully transfer projects/samples from DT -> DTII. Transfer crashed several time just copying the samples. I might wait until this is more stable as there are still 19GB‘s to go

Another small thing that annoys me (yeah more of an OCD thing) are that the label printings are slightly off and were made maybe in a hurry? Wonder if it is worthwhile to mention it to the QM guys at Elektron.

The advantage is you can still play the device, it will load/backup in the background. With higher transfer speeds it may take away too much memory bandwith to make this still possible at all cases. They also would have to write new drivers for USB mass storage support (as is only available for the old Octatrack design), that may be too much of a burden for now.

I think we may have to live with this, if there is not a clear word from Elektron this will improve. That they will give this some priority.

General Digitakt Mic PSA (or any xlr to 1/4")

If you buy an XLR to TRS adapter, be really careful with that thing. "
Just by having that adapter, you are opening the potential to mishaps.

I went to jam with a buddy and he plugged in my Rev2 synth via some adapters like this without me knowing and we ended up frying something with the phantom power. Obviously a rookie mistake but a costly one.

I’d guess it’s because the samples are stereo so there’s twice as much data.

its normal … it does take ages to load … the waveforms from the samples dont appear for quite a while too, although the audio is working.
more memory , stereo samples … takes ages.

am i missing something or is there no way to set the mixer/compressor globally on the DT2 ? (i.e. so it doesn’t change when you move patterns?)

If it would be just the amount of data it would take longer to transmit a sample but it wouldn’t make the actual transfer speed almost twice as slow. Because now it’s 4x slower: 2x because of more data (stereo?) and (almost) 2x because of half the transfer speed.

No you are not missing something. Global FX / mixer settings are currently not (yet) implemented for DT2 in the UI. But since you can import DTOG projects it is supported somehow. See also the mention of this report regarding global mixer settings when importing a DTOG project:

I think this will be added in a future firmware, or resolved by expanding the PERFORM KIT mode.

A workaround could be to create a kit template with those settings applied.

Yes, you are correct. Brain fart on my part.

Have you heard anything about your order? I ordered from them last Wednesday night and they told me it should ship yesterday, but haven’t gotten a shipping notification yet

The one feature I am really looking forward to!!

Got shipping notification yesterday, so you shouldn’t be far behind.
