How the Internet ruins productivity (by design)

I’m not really one for 10 minute YouTube videos but I recommend watching this. The guy seems to know his stuff and I thought other people here could benefit from watching it.

Yes his videos are always pretty interesting, I also like Joe Rogan he has some very interesting guests and covers a huge range of topics.

I read the book ”hooked” and while this video is not the equivalent of reading that book, it delivers the same point. There are a lot of ”powers that be” who want to get you addicted to using their stuff.

I think its a topic most of all should certainly get aquainted with.

I totally agree with what he’s saying but I don’t think it’s the actual Internet to blame, just rather people’s own addiction to it… I think the Internet is inherently neutral and can be both helpful as well as harmful, it’s up to what you use it for and how you use it…

But yeah, there’s so much of what he’s saying going on it’s ridiculous, and definitely not so good for millions of people…

I like the guy but I did find it ironic at the end where he says “If you like this please subscribe” haha…

Except the point he is making is exactly the oposite one

That’s OK with me… I think, maybe I didn’t listen intently enough, I was organizing things…

Are you saying my post does not align with what he said, if so that’s fine with me…
Or are you saying he agrees with what I said, in which case my post was redundant?

Your post is awesome, it’s just the opposite what the guy is trying to say. It’s cool either way

I walk my own path… People can walk with me, but I don’t care if they don’t…
I tend not to follow anyone if they’re going another direction than I’m headed, unless their extremely convincing and win me over, I might alter my course…

I don’t pin negativity on anything non-human, It’s a human emotion that occurs inside of people and affects how they relate with things… It goes way deeper so when the something is an outcome of a human action, like pollution, I don’t like it… I’d prefer the Internet not create waste from being powered, but I think that can change…
I’m willing to change my opinion, and perhaps mine isn’t super solid and will change multiple times in the future… This is what I’m feeling in the present moment, but alas people and their opinions change just as the moment does…

Yeah. the guys got all sorts of videos too, he’s got a couple about specifically this point and more in depth about breaking procrastination habits

I know, super ironic but I think the informative nature of the channel isn’t quite browsing shitposts. To add to the irony though I did fall into a rabbit hole of his videos after watching this video about not chasing more…

My only internet social type thing is right here in the nauts. When I log in I basically answer all the questions that I can find, I feel like I’m putting in energy and helping people instead of mindlessly seeking stimulus…

Also I google anything I want to learn about and have learned tons of stuff… That’s my only discrepancy, I agree with what the guy says and it happens and is no bueno, I just think there’s good that can come from the Internet as well, it’s just a tool and can be used in many ways. Probably much greater good could possibly come from it too far beyond my examples…

That is actually one of the reasons I ended up turning to products like Elektron’s, and some other synths : it helps me not power up the computer.

Everytime I do so I end up making music for about half an hour and then I get distracted and I end up laughing at some porn and masturbating to funny cats. It’s really a dire situation.

As an offline alternative, I’d highly recommend Douglas Rushkoff’s excellent book Present Shock.

Great video. I’m certainly addicted to social media to a degree.
And after that I watched the video about sugar and alcohol… Not really new, but now I’m feeling very guilty

I am definately addicted to conspiracy and UFO/mystery things Videos. I fall for stupid titles Like “Thats what THEY dont want you to See” or “Heres the proof that aliens with big cucumbers visited earth” or “Ex-CIA reveals the truth” and then i go and watch for 10 - 60 minutes hoping to find a real proof and then Shit. All videos are more or less badly made, layered with bad voice overs and even worse music and Proof or reveal bullshit.
Instead of going to sleep i literally spent countless hours of non sleep watching that crap.
On the other hand…i havent touched my Twitter account for years and i deleted my Facebook account eight years ago. WhatsApp is in use for Family exclusive. And Nauts Here… . If i have to fill waiting time its nice to be Here.

I’d both agree and disagree - on the one hand there’s really noone else to blame for getting into the habit of turning to the internet as soon as we get bored. And it’s up to us to break that habit.

But on the other hand, sites like fb & reddit act as a perfect skinnerbox with the ability to trigger/encourage compulsive behaviour in exactly the same way that slot machines or World of Warcraft do.

Either way, i need to get off the bloody web…
