Glue Compressor Hardware solution

Hrm, any under-1k rack or desktop compressors I ought to consider for vocal use? New or used/no longer in production fine.

Or should I just route my mic through my Overstayer Modular Channel’s compy instead for that price point? It’d get me there, but I expect that to be less breathy/expressive and a bit more brutish…

Vocals is where things can get a little pricey if you want that clean breathy sound (hint - ideally you want a decently sound treated room for this, or the compressor will bring out all of that room noise). I think having any form of compressor for vocals going in is a really good thing tough. I used an RNC when I started tracking singers, just to control the peaks.

The best vocal compressor for me would be some sort of LA2A clone that isn’t super expensive. Not sure if that exists.

If you’re in the US, Front End Audio seems to have new stock of FMR RNC.

Only if its pushed hard, which should not be the situation for glue compression.

Yeah, I’ve constructed and installed rockwool panels in the room, I’d be quite happy to just get to the point where I can practice technique until it’s worth calling in an expert to lay out proper placement/treatment. If I fixate on the “perfect” setup at first I’m going to burn myself out with choice paralysis. And I research wayyyy too deeply to just accept thin foam triangles just to get over that mental hurdle :stuck_out_tongue:

They are super rare ; )

I heard there was only two made. And one of them was burned up in a pizza oven accident.

I tried replicating the Glue Compressor with the OT Master compressor. Came quite close. Thing is; the OT’s compressor forces you to go by ear. The values are hard to interpret, due to the 1-127 range being 0,5 to 5s on Release, but quicker on attack ie. Could really use an update IMO. The Digitakt has the visual feedback with just the bouncing stripe, which is super helpful.

I’ll refrain from buying a hardware compressor for now. That’s the difficult thing with the OT for me. It’s super inspiring and cool but when using it with other Elektron’s the whole overbridge thing does bug me a bit. Like I am telling myself I’m not able to use all the amazing tools in Ableton just because I’ve added the OT to my setup. While I perfectly can, I just do not use it as much / in depth at that moment. Tnx for all the replies.

Tempting

At that price I’d get a secondhand 500 series rack, a module with some flavor of SSL-style compression, and have room to expand.

I don’t think I’d ever really get into 500 to justify saving money.

True, but it’s still cheaper than 19" for the quality. Once you have the actual rack, that’s the big price hurdle that keeps me our of it - even the cheapest DIY rack kit I could find last time I looked was over $300 and a small, entry level, off the shelf rack is usually at least $800 but once that’s out of the way you can get really nice stuff in the mid-Eurorack price range. So definitely not affordable by any reasonable standard, but pretty cheap by pro studio gear standards.

I’m sure those Bugbrand modules are nice, too.

Hopefully in a couple years I can afford and justify a simple master buss chain (stereo EQ, some kind of preamp with transformers, maybe a compressor or limiter that complements the GSSL I already built). Not even close to an option for me yet, though.

Anyone know if the MC-707 bus compressor is any good?

I remember the MC-101’s (same) master comp/limiter being multi-band and that made it very useful. Wish TR-6S/8S had it

+1 for both suggestions. Rough rider is great and free. The 404mk2 has a few good options for saturation & compression, the cassette sim is super warm sounding.

I am still pretty blown away by the ALM MFX compressor… I didn’t initially buy it to be a compressor but it is great as a master glue compressor to my ear. I like it enough I now have 2 one basically lives as a compressor and the other is for playing about with other algos

A cheaper Thermionic? Good luck! Stuff like the Culture Vulture is worth every cent, but even second hand they’re bloody expensive if you’re not a pro running a studio.

I spent a few months reading abou & lusting over their work before settling on the Drawmer 1976 & Warm Audio bus comp for colour, glue & keeping a stereo signal.

Quite happy with the pair & I probably spent a similar amount for those as an entry level Thermionic… Stupid irrational value systems…

I dont know what a mini 500 rack would cost, but they are a respectable brand, the demos sound good to my ears.

I use Fabfilter L2 in the box, no real need for such a device. Glue on group channels, with auto turned on.
On the Octatrack i go by ear.
