Fader controllers

ATOV Faderpunk now available in stores, I think this thing will have to get its own thread soon. The Australian price isn’t too bad… think I’ll wait until later in the year to snap one up.

The Lujin, 3 x 100mm faders and more.

Looks solid, but only 3 faders? Not sure what the logic is there. I can’t think of any setup I’ve ever had when I didn’t need 8 faders (or even more… love my FaderFox MX12). And rotaries to the left of the faders is also a bit odd, doesn’t make sense from a channel strip perspective. Perhaps that’s not what it’s meant for.

Pretty sure these are mostly intended to be used more in expression pedal or mod wheel type situations (think filmscore composers playing keys.)

Here is something with faders.

Yes, I found about this controller in the video below, and the honest reviewer says that this is a good controller especially for orchestral music production and the likes. For the rest, he says, average shorter faders and even a modwheel will just do.

Ah, thanks, OK the penny’s just dropped for me now, I get it. And this might be good for my setup after all. My main keyboard is a Nord Electro 6D which doesn’t have a pitch wheel or mod wheel. I don’t need a pitch wheel TBH but a mod wheel or equivalent would be really helpful. This little box could do mod wheel duties + expression + other and sit neatly alongside the Nord. That could work.

Yeah, I know. I think it’s because it’s sold as an electric piano/organ synth with a rudimentary sample synth attached. And who uses pitch and mod wheels with a piano or organ? So I get the logic. Also… market segmentation and all that.

Except it is also a great 61-key MIDI controller with the best keybed action (by far) for that size (IMO having tried literally everything else with 61 keys before I bought it) and, surprisingly, the sample synth is also pretty cool in practice.

So it does feel like an artificial limitation. That said, easily fixed by adding an external pitch/mod option.

also why are nords unnecessarily heavy?

Actually I quite like that! They feel VERY solid on the desktop. Never a bad thing in a piece of gear IMO. I think the weight lies in the keybed action, even the semi-weighted keys have a lot of heft to them, and the weighted keybed actions even more so. Plus they are beautifully put together, the pots and switches are in a different league to most gear.

untill you have to haul it from gig to gig.
the drummer is supposed to do the most lifting…

Hey, it’s all relative. When I played keyboards in bands (my main instrument was sax but I was on keys with a couple of bands) I used to lug my Roland RD-1000 with me and an Ensoniq Fizmo… Nords are featherweights by comparison! I had to ask the drummer for help if there were stairs at the venue (not unreasonable as several drummers I played with had ridiculously large kits and the whole band had to help with get-in and get-out).

Anyway, I’ll stop now… getting OT…
